MACK - Draft Notes

 (including end of games Friday)

 Tyler Jennings @TylerJennings24

                Chase Burns

6 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 15 K (67.9% strikes)

FB: 96-100, cut/ride (4 s/m, ~2715 RPMs)

SL: 85-91 (20 s/m, ~2880 RPMs)

CB: 80-84 (6 s/m, ~2800 RPMs)

CH: 87-92 (~1750 RPMs)

 30 total whiffs. Pure dominance.

(on my board, Burns will be the first pitcher picked at 1.5)

James Tibbs went yard again today and man, do I love this swing.

Hammered a line drive to CF at 111.3 earlier today, then hit this laser at 105.8 to extend FSU's lead. It would not be a shock to me if Tibbs ends up going in the top ten.

(at one point I had “III” as someone that might still be around when the Mets picked. Not anymore. Agree he could go in the 8- 10 range)

Griff O'Ferrall has been excellent this week and he's on the board with a tank, a dead-center HR off Jamie Arnold that went 405 feet and left the bat at 103.1 MPH. Excellent contact skills, even though he is aggressive. Surefire SS imo, looking more and more like a 2nd rounder.

(the 6-1 infielder plays both middle infield positions… scrappy. Impressive hands and a solid hitter. I too have him in the 45-55 pick range)

Ryan Andrade: 2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K

*Posting film purely to showcase his stuff*

FB: 91-94, big carry (3 s/m, ~2560 RPMs)

SL: 80-84, depth (4 s/m, ~2750 RPMs)

CH: 86-87, firm + lacked feel

Big stuff, but limited by 30 command. Needs a dev fit, FB/SL is very intriguing.

(6-2 junior at Pitt. Third day pick)

                    Michael Massey has returned!

1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

FB - 93-96, huge carry w/ cut (up to 2400 RPMs)

SL - 82-85, two-plane w/ low spin

First outing since April 28th, fits as a 3rd/4th round type.

(agree with 4th round projection)

Arkansas Baseball @RazorbackBSB

AM on Thu, May 23, 2024:

Hagen Smith's season totals:

 1.48 ERA

79.0 IP

37 H

16 R

13 ER

30 BB

154 SO

                        Stephen Schoch @bigdonkey47

These numbers are even more ridiculous when you think about how much offense there has been in college baseball this season

(I still have hom being picked only as the 2nd pitcher, behind Chase Burns)

Teddy Cahill @tedcahill

Tommy White.

Oppo grand slam. That's his 75th career home run. No one in the 21st century has hit more home runs than Tommy White

(if you’re looking for a home run hitting monster that can play both at third and first… hint hint… this is your guy)

Stephen Schoch @bigdonkey47

Casey Saucke hits the 20th home run of the ACC Tournament so far. Tournament record is 54 and we’ve still got 11 more games to go

(played mostly right field in college buy is projected toplay at third. Going into the playoffs, I have him being picked in the 4th  round)

Stephen Igoe @StephenIgoe

Cliff Godwin said ECU ace Trey Yesavage has been in the hospital the last two nights dealing with a partially collapsed lung after some chest discomfort in recent days.

He will most likely be released today and be able to resume physical activity once he gets out of the hospital

(this is really alarming news for a guy projected to be picked before the Mets pick at 1.19. I assume ECU will baby step him and this could really drive down his draft status)

Mark Etheridge @marketheridge

Luke Holman is at 100 pitches through 6 shutout innings. Like Gage Jump yesterday, Holman gives LSU a scary option for regionals.

                Teddy Cahill  @tedcahill

Luke Holman is done after six innings.  6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K

(Holman went into this playoff season as either a Sup-A 1st round pick or an early second. Pitching like this will only improve here)

Clemson Baseball  @ClemsonBaseball

Blake Wright     3B

Locked in from Day 1  All-ACC infielder.

• .341 batting average

• 21 HR

• 70 RBI

• 62 runs

(this senior has had an incredible year and placed himself solidly as an early second day pick in July’s draft)

MLB Pipeline @MLBPipeline

Jac Caglianone can hit (1.373 OPS). And pitch (68 K's in 62 IP). And flash the leather!

More on this year No. 3 Draft prospect: https://t.co/5BKiFZcuZA

(Jac will be off the board before the first commercial break)

Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Oregon State 2B Travis Bazzana has been named Pac-12 Player of the Year, as well as the 2024 Batting Champion.

(More accolades for Bazzana Banana… probably the 1.2 pick behind Georgia 3B Carlie Condon)

What a freaking start by LHP Gage Jump in LSU's biggest game of the year thus far against a loaded Georgia lineup.

7 IP

4 H

1 ER

7 K

1 BB

105 pitches, 75(!) for strikes

Season high in pitches, fourth time over 100 pitches in 2024.

(this is the time of the year that big individual tournament games can improvr one’s draft status. Gage went into Tuesday as around the 100th pick in the draft. Since great pitching is so rare in this draft, I move him up around 20 slots just because of this game)

Stephen Schoch @bigdonkey47

Lyle Miller-Green with his 30th long ball of the season! Way more impressive than that trumpet playing crocodile if you ask me

Brian Recca @brian_recca

Donovan Zsak  Rutgers

FINALLY got to see Zsak. Long, projectable frame w/ athleticism. Heavy FB usage from  high 3/4 slot. Late, riding life on heater. 95+ x7 in 2nd inn. Also showed a get me over CU, straight CH.

FB: 90-95, 97 x2, 99 x1

CU: 70-74

CH: 82-84

Zsak last 3 starts: 15 IP, 1.20 ERA, 4 H, 8 BB, 13 K, .089 BAA

Gabe Driscoll Binghamton

RHP SR who really knows how to PITCH. Physical/durable @ 6'5-225. + command of 5 pitch mix. Works both sides well; CT is best K pitch. 66.1 IP, 3.26 ERA, 66 K, 13 BB, 5.08 K/BB. Potential "SR sign"

FB/SI: 87-91

CT: 85-86

SL: 77-80

CH: 81-82

(I currently have Driscoll as a third day pick in the last 10 rounds)

Kendall Rogers @KendallRogers

SCOOP: Washington State 3B and leading hitter Cole Cramer intends to enter the Transfer Portal when it opens next Tuesday, I'm told. Cramer was the leading hitter for the Cougars in 2024, batting .345 with 15 doubles, 3 homers and 37 RBIs. Will be a SR.

(just because you file for transfer doesn’t mean you can’t be drafted and signed. Sime more obsure players use this as an opportunity to tell the drafting world, hey, here I am! No ink on him at this point.)

  1. Good morning Mack, a few thoughts:
With regard to Hagen Smith, great numbers, but how much good competition did he face? And, how is his control and command? Obviously, the numbers are impressive.

On Holman, 100 pitches in six innings is a bit much. Hope these kids’ arms don’t fall off.

I recall reading about Chase DeLauren and how he hadn’t fared well against top competition. Still, the Guardians took him and he is a top 30 prospect now. Scouting the tools is so much harder than scouting the stats.

    1. This is why I still would pick Burns first over Smith

Mets still seem to be almost obsessed with velo.

And great succes with pitching lab on Tong and Orellana

So much easier to change mechanics to increase control than teach a new pitch

  2. Tommy WHite? Will he be available to the Mets? Any downsides?

    1. Yes he probably will still be on the board when the Mets pick

Plays third and first with huge power

      But

      Doesn't pitch

    2. Tom

This is a very weak draft for starters. If you don't pick one early you may not find one serviceable starter

  3. Gus,
Hagen Smith pitchers in the SEC, considered to be very good competition, so I would say he is legitimate.
