19. New York Mets

Vance Honeycutt, OF — North Carolina

HOMETOWN: Salisbury, NC

HEIGHT: 6-3

WEIGHT: 185

BAT/THROW: R-R

The Mets seem like the perfect organization to get the most out of Honeycutt’s raw, unpolished tools, and they like him. It’s plus raw power, double-plus defense in centerfield, plus speed, and a solid-average arm.

Honeycutt struggles to make consistent contact, resulting in a strikeout rate that might be unsavory to most organizations. But the Mets have been a solid organization in terms of developing hitters of late. They’ve also added a lot of brain power to the front office in recent years and should have that ship firing on all cylinders soon.

HEIGHT: 6-3

WEIGHT: 185

HOMETOWN: Wauchula, FL

HEIGHT: 6-0

WEIGHT: 175

BAT/THROW: R-R

26. New York Yankees

Griffin Burkholder, OF — Freedom

HOMETOWN: South Riding, VA

HEIGHT: 6-2

WEIGHT: 195

BAT/THROW: R-R

27. Philadelphia Phillies

Brody Brecht, RHP — Iowa

HOMETOWN: Ankeny, IA

HEIGHT: 6-4

WEIGHT: 205

BAT/THROW: R-R

Brecht is a name that is tough to pin down. Toronto seems to like him and he’s been mentioned in conversation inside of that pick too. But in this scenario, he falls to Philadelphia, an organization never too shy about selecting pitching.

Brecht seems like a good value with the 27th pick in this draft. It’s clearly the floor of a dominant closer who could shut down games as early as 2025, but Brecht still has top-of-the-rotation upside if Philadelphia can straighten out the strikes. This is a crapshoot guess as there are plenty of exciting players still on the board here.

  1. Here’s the thing with Honeycutt:

The year the Mets took Gavin Cecchini, the White Sox had the next pick and took Courtney Hawkins. I didn’t follow anything other than the Mets and knew nothing about their minors or even the MLB draft. So, I read Cecchini’s writeup and Hawkins’ writeup and I was upset they didn’t take Hawkins. I didn’t know anything but just the writeups. Time goes on, and I follow Hawkins’ stats but nothing more. He can’t hit the ball! One day, I finally read that the White Sox released him. Oh well.

A few years later, working at the restaurant, an overweight guy comes in to get a Chicken Parmesan. I run his debit card and as I wait for the receipt to print, took a look at the name: Courtney Hawkins. Hmmm, how cute I say to myself. As he is leaving, I get my phone out to look at his bio and see that he is from… CORPUS CHRISTI! Oh shit!!! That was THE Courtney Hawkins!!!! LOL, he did notice I was looking kind of intently at his name and while he didn’t say anything, I don’t remember seeing him again.

    Honeycutt’s writeup sounds like Hawkins.

    1. I loved Hawkins in school

Should have had a hero with him

  2. I really didn’t want to know anything about players that weren’t in the majors. In NYC, we don’t do college, high school or minor leagues… until the Cyclones. The attention to Hawkins was a complete irony.

Brody Brecht, RHP — Iowa Sounds like the stuff a first rounder should profile
