IN FOCUS - David Peterson, Mets Starters

Pitch Profiler                      @pitchprofiler

David Peterson navigated plenty of hard contact and kept the ball on the ground to deliver five shutout innings for the Mets tonight!

Peterson has become a real Steady Eddie on this staff. Both he and Tylor Megill have proven that if, given time, one can develop into a quality rotation piece in this game. Pitchers like Peterson make it easy to put other pitchers (Sean Manaea) on the 60-day.

Syracuse –

Tuesday night's game between the Syracuse Mets and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders has been postponed because of inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader on Wednesday, April 30th beginning at 4:05 p.m. Game two will begin approximately 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Gates will open at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As a reminder, fans with tickets on days of doubleheaders can attend both games.

Binghamton –

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (12-9) fell to the Erie SeaWolves 13-3 on Tuesday night in eight-innings in a rain-shortened series opener at UPMC Park. Erie hit six home runs on the evening, including two from Jake Holton.

Erie (15-7) got on the board in the bottom of the third with a pair of two-run homers from Trei Cruz and Holton off Binghamton starter Jack Wenninger (4-1) to take a 4-0 lead. After Binghamton scored on a passed ball to get on the board in the fourth, Nick Lorusso blasted a two-run homer to left center in the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-3. It was Lorusso’s second home run of the year, and he now has driven in 11 runs this season.

The SeaWolves would respond with nine unanswered runs. In the fifth, Holton hit a three-run home run to left, his second of the night, making it 7-3 Erie. In the seventh, Max Anderson hit a solo shot and Eduardo Valencia hit a two-run homer as part of a five-run frame. Jim Jarvis also hit the first homer of his Double-A career in the sixth. Holton finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and 5 RBIs.

The game went into a rain delay before the bottom of the eighth inning and was eventually called due to inclement weather.

POSTGAME NOTES: Lorusso, Nick Morabito, and Travis Swaggerty all finished with multi-hit games…Jett Williams reached base twice…The Rumble Ponies had nine hits on the night and the two teams combined for 22 in total…Erie scored 11 of their 13 runs via the home run.

Brooklyn –

In his first game with High-A Brooklyn, 19-year-old SS Marco Vargas provided a walk-off base hit in the 10th to give the Cyclones a 7-6 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Brooklyn set a new franchise record, stealing nine bases in the game, topping a previous high of eight, which was set in August of 2017.

CF Carson Benge logged a season high four hits in the victory, while LF Eli Serrano III collected 3 RBI. In addition to the nine steals, Brooklyn batters also drew eight free passes on the day.

RHP Noah Hall pitched better than his final line may suggest - 5.0 IP, 4 R (3 ER), while striking out seven and walking one.

The ‘Clones and Blue Rocks return to action on Wednesday at 11:00 AM for the first Education Day game of the season. RHP Joel Diaz (0-0, 0.00 ERA) toes the slab for Brooklyn. He’s expected to be opposed by LHP Jackson Kent (2-2, 1.31 WHIP).

St. Lucie -

The Palm Beach Cardinals defeated the St. Lucie Mets 3-1 on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in a battle for first place in the Florida State League East Division.

Colin Houck got the Mets on the board with a RBI single in the sixth inning to make it 2-1. However, Herrera got the next batter Daiverson Gutierrez to hit into an inning-ending double play.

The Mets were held to four total hits - singles from Houck, Jeremy Rodriguez, Nick Roselli and Kevin Villavicencio.

Lanthier took the loss. He pitched 4.0 innings and gave up two runs on two hits. Mets reliever Irving Cota pitched 2.0 shutout innings to lower his season ERA to 0.59.

Ronny Mauricio will eventually be joining Syracuse (the plan was late April, even if that's mid-May now, not far off), Jett Williams soon enough and promotions pushing players to Bing and the chain reactions

Baseball America with some love for Raimon Gomez and his performance this week. They did however note his command is "still shaky". Gomez is rule 5 eligible after the season. Safe to say if he pitches reasonably well he's being added to the 40

We might see the Mets DFA Urena today after throwing 3 innings yesterday ( he'll likely clear waivers), bring up Devinsky who has good reverse splits in his career and possibly make another move before tomorrow's game.

  1. Excited to see Lambert bumped to AA. He could be a NY Met by July if needed. My plan would be May in AA, June in AAA.

Could Parada do any worse? Should he be demoted two levels to St Lucie? What happened to him? Worst in Mets system walk rate, worst in K rate, and hitting .130?

    1. I too see big things ahead for Lambert

    2. I try not to say negative things about a struggling player, but Parada has reached the embarrassment stage

Lost 20 pounds, built muscle, and got contacts for what?

Package him and Siri for a lunch at Taco 🔔

  2. Mendoza still pulled Peterson after 5 innings and 85 pitches and a large lead. Our starters need to be going 6-7 innings and at least 100 pitches. Thankfully we used some triple AAA pitchers to take some innings. The bullpen needs some rest!

      He just won't do it

Makes no sense to me either 😕

  3. Some promising early season performances down on the farm. Lambert the first ‘24 draft pick to reach AA. 8 IP, 3H, 1 BB, 17 K will definitely get you noticed.

Forget Parada, I think we know how his story ends, but it’d be nice to see Trey Snyder and Jesus Baez start to hit. Chris Suero needs to significantly cut down on the K’s, but he’s doing everything else right, including 3 BB and his 6th and 7th SB last night. Not bad for a catcher.

    1. Real professional ballplayers are made or broken in the chain. For every Lambert is a Parada

Got Real concerns about Baez. Not so Benge and Houck

Very few bench MAJOR LEAGUE players become successful members of a starting lineup

      Huge exception

      Wilmer Flores

    2. True, Mack. It’s a crapshoot. Though better FO’s whiff on fewer 1st round picks. The guy I didn’t mention who I’m excited about is AJ Ewing. Highly touted, not great last season, but looks like a real prospect thus far in ‘25.

  4. My guess on shorter starter length? Mendoza and Stearns know that if there is another injury to a starter right now, the replacement choices are bad. So he pitches them less to keep them healthy. Look at the last 2 games,,,the Mets surrender 8 runs, and 7 of those were from two just-called-up AAAAs in just 5 total innings.

The formula is working until Montas and Manaea return, which I am guessing is 4-6 weeks away for each. We need our 5 gem starters to stay healthy until then.

Relievers get hurt? Dedniel is ready.

But if a Starter gets hurt? No one is objectively ready.

Paul Backburn could soon be ready, but his last Mets start in 2024 was a disaster. So, no, let's not mess things up. Stay short with the starters.

    1. Very curious about Waddell today. Smart move not putting extra pressure on him by starting him. Brazobán gets the rock.

If this works, Kimchee for everyone

  5. Adam, Suero needs many more ABs to get his bat to MLB caliber. He is only 21 and only up 739 times. Brandon Nimmo was up about 2500 times in the minors excluding rehab assignments. I'd say Suero needs to get from 739 up to close to 2,000 to be really ready.

    1. Agreed, Tom. He’s got plenty of time to clean up the K’s, and his varied skills seem to already be showing. Plus, catchers (he seems to be primarily a catcher, though he’s played all over the place) generally take longer regardless. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

  6. Peterson was good last night, but his defense was better. That 4th inning has got to be the best defensive inning ever played in Citi Field.
Jack Wenninger has been great in Binghamton this year. Finally threw a dud last night. Now we get to see how he responds - that may be a better measuring stick than his winning streak.

  7. Besides Baty, Jett Williams seems to be next readiest among the hitting prospects, followed by Nick Morabito, who has picked it up after his glacial first 4 games. My guess is Jett and Morabito won't be rushed. Both could be ready by September, I am guessing.

Adam, same logic with Ryan Clifford as with Suero, except Clifford has been up a lot more so far. I think he needs this year and most of 2026 to (hopefully) be ready.

    1. Clifford is also still very young. This is a big year for him though.

    2. Baty playing in Syracuse clogs up the infield and will drastically slow down infield promotions to there

  8. Mack, I would promote, and dump veterans as needed to make AAA room.

I seriously would demote Parada to St Lucie, and treat it as a rehab assignment. Even if it is mental rehab. He’s only 23. Let him feel good hitting again.

  9. Mack,
Many years ago the Mets traded another catching prospect, Alan Zinter, who had fallen out of favor to Detroit for another player, Rico Brogna, that had also fallen out of favor. That worked well for the Mets. Let's do that again.
