Syracuse –

After a hot weekend of hitting on the road, the Syracuse Mets returned home to chilly temperatures and a cold lineup in a winless doubleheader against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Wednesday night at NBT Bank Stadium. The Mets dropped the first game, 5-0, and the second matchup, 2-0.

In game one, Syracuse (13-16) left too many opportunities on the table in the 5-0 loss. The Mets outhit Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (14-14) with seven base knocks but left seven runners on base. Syracuse also went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Joey Meneses was the only hitter in the Mets order with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 in the loss. Mets starter Dom Hamel pitched three hitless innings to begin the game but gave up four runs in the top of the fourth inning. The RailRiders added one more run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly.

Game two didn’t prove to be much better for Syracuse hitters. The Mets notched just two hits: singles from Gilberto Celestino and Jon Singleton. Syracuse starter Brandon Sproat pitched four-and-one third innings and allowed two earned runs with four strikeouts. After Sproat, Tyler Zuber and Anthony Gose tossed two and two-thirds innings of scoreless baseball. 

Binghamton –

William Lugo had three hits and drove in two runs as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (13-9) held off the Erie SeaWolves 3-2 at UPMC Park Wednesday afternoon. The two teams have split the first two games of the series.

Binghamton starter Zach Thornton, making his Double-A debut, retired the first nine batters he faced. Thornton allowed two runs over four and a third innings with no walks and two strikeouts in the no decision.

The Rumble Ponies got on the board in the second inning, as Nick Lorusso and Travis Swaggerty began the frame with a pair of singles. Two batters later, with runners on the corners and one out, Yonny Hernandez hit an RBI groundout to the right side to drive home Lorusso and advance Swaggerty to second. The next batter, Lugo, lined a single to center to score Swaggerty and make it 2-0 Binghamton.

In the fourth, Lugo hit an RBI double off the left field wall that scored Kevin Parada from first and made it 3-0 Ponies. Lugo finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, his second three-hit contest over his past three games.

RHP Ryan Lambert came in to start the seventh to make his Double-A debut after being called up Tuesday. Lambert walked the first two batters he faced, but with runners on the corners and one out, he struck out Max Anderson and Jake Holton to complete a scoreless frame.

Douglas Orellana pitched two perfect frames to close out the game and earn his second save of the season. Rumble Ponies relievers combined for four and two thirds innings of scoreless work, as Erie did not score outside of the two-run fifth. Orellana dropped his ERA to 0.87 as he has allowed just one run in seven appearances (10.1 IP) this season.

POSTGAME NOTES: Lugo is the first Rumble Ponies player to have multiple (3) hit games on the season…it’s Lugo’s second multi-RBI game of the year…Jett Williams doubled in the seventh to extend his on-base streak to 11 games. 

Brooklyn –

Behind a franchise-tying three home runs from DH Jacob Reimer, the Brooklyn Cyclones slugged their way to a 15-1 thrashing of the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Wednesday afternoon. C Ronald Hernandez also left the yard twice in the victory. The Cyclones scored runs in every inning but the 3rd and 8th.

Four Cyclones enjoyed multi-hit contests. In addition to Reimer’s three-hit day and Hernandez’s four-hit performance, LF Carson Benge and SS Boston Baro put together multi-hit efforts. It’s also the second straight game that a Cyclone has notched four hits, with Hernandez doing so following Benge’s four hit night on Tuesday.

Somewhat lost in the shuffle perhaps was how dominant Brooklyn arms were, holding the Blue Rocks in check to just one run on three hits. RHP Joel Diaz continued his unreal start to the year, chucking five innings of one run ball - the first run he’s surrendered all year. Diaz’s scoreless inning streak to start the campaign came to an end at 17.1 innings.

Four BK relievers combined on four innings of shutout ball, each working one scoreless frame. RHP Chandler Marsh dazzled in his Brooklyn debut, and has still yet to allow a run this year after starting his campaign in Single A. LHP Ryan Ammons racked up a pair of strikeouts as part of a scoreless 7th inning. RHP Brian Metoyer returned to the Maimonides Park mound for the first time since 2022 and threw a clean 8th inning, before giving way to RHP Eduardo Herrera who put the icing on the cake in the 9th. 

St. Lucie –

The St. Lucie Mets improved to 4-0 in extra innings this season with a thrilling 8-6 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals in 11 innings at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium on Wednesday night.

Trey Snyder ripped a RBI single in the 11th inning to break a 5-5 tie and give the Mets a 6-5 lead. Later in the frame Nick Roselli laced a RBI double and Yohairo Cuevas worked a bases loaded walk to give the Mets two crucial insurance runs and an 8-5 advantage.

Hoss Brewer allowed a run-scoring ground out in the bottom of the 11th but struck out Cade McGee as the tying run to end the game. Brewer pitched a scoreless 10th inning after the Mets didn’t score in their half of the 10th to force the 11th inning.

The Mets were down 4-2 entering the eighth inning. Colin Houck hit a game-tying two-run double. Houck advanced to third base on a throw home on the play and he went on to score on a Daiverson Gutierrez ground out to give the Mets a 5-4 lead.

Snyder went 4 for 5 with a double, RBI and two runs. Leadoff hitter Jeremy Rodriguez was 3 for 6. Gutierrez hit his first home run of the season in the second inning.

Mets right fielder Simon Juan threw out Pena twice in the game – once at home plate to end the second inning and again in the 10th inning at third base when Pena was trying to tag up on a fly out.
