NY Post: Mets sign Jonathan Villar to add infield depth

Blogging Mets: Mets Shouldn’t Bother With Justin Turner. "Turner turned 36 in November. I know I am a broken record on this, but many, many players fall off a cliff at around this age. Turner did all right in his shortened age 35 season, batting .307, but history says he is unlikely to repeat it at this point in his life."

On the other hand, PECOTA said the Mets would win the NL East last year as well.

Ken Davidoff NY Post: Davey Johnson relives famous Mets moment after scary COVID-19 battle. “Two weeks of the virus knocked the hell out of me,” the beloved former manager of the Mets (and four other teams) told The Post on Monday. “My wife kept praying for me. All of a sudden, I woke up, after so much fever and coughing, and I didn’t have a cough. I didn’t have a fever. I felt normal. I went from feeling miserable to feeling great. I hope you don’t have to experience [the coronavirus]."

National Pastime.com:

1982

The Mets agree to a $10 million, five-year deal with George Foster, completing the trade with the Reds, which sent Jim Kern, Greg Harris, and Alex Trevino to Cincinnati. During his four-and-half-year tenure with the team, the All-Star outfielder proves to be a major disappointment and will be released outright during the 1986 season after accusing the club of racism for benching him in favor of Kevin Mitchell, a fellow African-American.

1984

After five months of discussion, the Mets and Keith Hernandez, who was eligible for free agency at the end of the season, come to terms on an $8 million, five-year contract. The deal makes the first baseman the second highest-paid player in franchise history, earning slightly less than George Foster's five-year, $10 million pact signed precisely two years ago.

2020

A memorial service takes place at Angel Stadium for veteran Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli, his wife Keri, and their 14-year-old daughter Alyssa, victims who perished with Kobe Bryant in a helicopter crash last month in Calabasas, CA. 'Alto,' who led his Pirates to four state championships en route to compiling a 705–478–4 collegiate record, worked as head coach from 2012-14 for the Cape Cod Baseball League's Brewster Whitecaps, mentoring future major leaguers Aaron Judge (Yankees), Jeff McNeil (Mets), and Ryon Healy (Brewers).

  1. Why would the Mets get Justin Turner if we have Villar and there is no DH?

Turner could go into hitting decline at his age. Cano didn’t. Turner might not decline either.

MLB: I WANT THE DH. There, I said it!

  2. Mayor Mike writes about Villar costing more than JD Davis. Simple - it is the way baseball's salary climb works. Jeff McNeil makes less than Villar too, but in a few years, Jeff could be making far more than Villar.

  3. So, the Marlins outfield is now Dickerson, Marte and Duvall. That's not too shabby.

  4. Not at all. Pretty good pitching staff as well.
