He also was hit by pitch, so 5-5 in base. I still believe despite down season, he is still only 23 and in limited playing time, he has shown important improvements, like a higher BB rate and lower K rate. He has the best numbers across the board for all Vegas OFs in the second half and won't exhaust his prospect status until after next year. I don't know what he did to Wally's pet rabbit, but Puello would profile as exactly what the Mets need for RF, if he could recover Bingo #'s, but has been blocked by Vaughn, Serratelli and Allen, who may never reach the ML again and A Brown, who has fallen off a cliff since June. Even as rough as it has been he shows over 50 EB hits if he got 600 ABs. He hasn't picked up from last year for sure, but it is almost organizational malpractice not to give him a full year of ABs in the hope he could be an internal solution. Call me crazy, but I predict he breaks out next year and moves back to the high prospect he was. He had stunk and he has flashed this year, but if he were a .280 hitter, with 20 HR, 40 2B, 20 SB, 9% BB, 20% K and played his defense in RF, he could be part of the OF solution. He was never given 100 ABs in any month, at the expense of Serratelli, Vaughn, Brown and Allen. Can't imagine what he did, but I'm on the record that he bounces back next year and mashes in Vegas. Average age of rookies in ML is 25, so he has one more year before his tooth even becomes a bit long. My candidate to earn mid season promotion next summer. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Anon Joe
ReplyDeleteMan, Anonymous, couldn't agree more. The at bats of those guys have cost Puello far too much playing time. What if he hit .220 playing almost every day thru mid-july, then clicked and hit .320 the rest of the way. Good power, great speed, great arm.
ReplyDeleteThose guys have also has cost Muno. Our 5 RBI leadoff hitter has missed starting something like 20-25 games. And per the box score I saw has 13 homers. And he has lots of RBIs. Wally's 2nd mistake is Muno use.
Mack (please correct me if I'm wrong), I think Puello can become a free agent if he's not on the Mets major league roster coming out of spring training.
ReplyDeletehere is what I have been able to find on the web:
DeleteQ. How long are Minor League players required to remain with the team that drafted them before they are eligible to negotiate with another team?
A. According to Major League Rule 3(b), "All Minor League Uniform Player Contracts between either a Major or a Minor League Club and a player who has not previously signed a contract with a Major or a Minor League Club shall be for a term of seven Minor League playing seasons."
Q. How and when do Minor League players acquire free agent status?
A. According to Major League Rule 55, "At 5 p.m. Eastern Time on Oct. 15 or on the fifth day following the last day of the World Series, whichever is later, of the last year of a player's Minor League Uniform Player Contract, the player's Minor League Uniform Player Contract shall expire and the player shall become a 'Minor League free agent' unless the player's Major or Minor League club has remaining options to renew the contract.
This is Puello's 7th minor league season, so it appears as if he is a FA, but they do list him as having one more option, so not sure if that would allow them to keep him. Even worse, according to the above, they become FA after this season is over, so they would have to decide by October. This is beyond stupid that they would not give him the full season to see if he is for real and I am in favor of adding him to ML 25 roster and option guys like Kirk and MDD and DFA EY, Tejada, Dice K, Eveland, Carlyle and whoever else they need to in order to give the 5th OF spot until he fails so badly that they can cut him, but they cannot let him simply walk next year. He is two years younger than the league and put up crazy numbers last year, after Biogenisis, so I don't believe he was juicing. If they allow him to go FA after this season, it will be absolutely ridiculous given their existing needs and his potential ceiling. To sit him in favor of Serratelli, Allen, Brown and Vaughn in the last year of his contract would be grounds for termination of Backman and/or Alderson, depending on who is responsible. This guy will be a useful backup OF at a minimum and has the potential to be an above average RF as his ceiling. He will be up in Sept for sure, but I cannot see how they would possibly allow him to walk and hit his stride with another team. Met fans would light torches and sharpen pitchforks

ReplyDeleteCesar Puello is a member of the 40 man roster.
Therefore Rule 55 does not apply to him.
to be excluded from Rule 55, the player must be offered a major league contract, have options left to send him to minors or accept an assignment, so rule 55 does apply to Puello and if the Mets don't put him on the 25 man roster, he will be eligible to elect FA. after 7 years, his MINOR league contract expires and they can only extend it with a remaining option (which they don't have) or offer him a major league contract, which is 25 man. 40 man roster only applies to Rule 5 Draft, so if Puello wants out, he can declare. Chances are that he will end up back in the minors to start next year, so he might choose the Mets, but no guarantee
Deleteafter doing a little more checking, it appears as if Puello is out of options after this year and if I am reading it right, he will become a FA in October 2014 if the Mets ML club does not purchase his contract and keep him on the 25 man roster; he would have to clear waivers in order to go back to Vegas, which he definitely would not as another team would claim him and send him to AAA. This is outrageous that they would not give him full playing time this year to see if he was part of the future. He has had two really bad months and three pretty good ones, but if you look at the stats since July 1, he has outperformed all OF on every level except Serratelli, who has hit .280 to Puello's .266, but Cesar has an OPS over .807 and has not been in the lineup on a regular basis. They have to find a spot for him on the 25 man roster and keep him as 5th OF until he totally dissolves. I would really like to know who owns this stupidity, Backman or Alderson.
ReplyDeleteAll these rules regarding Puello are giving me a headache. .......
ReplyDeleteThat being said, since it seems now that 2014 is/was such an important season for Puello and the Mets decision makers on him, why on Gods green earth would management have Puello playing 3-4 games a week instead of EVERY day to see what they have before this season ends?
PS please, nobody tell me he was being benched because Wally needs to field the 'best players' on the field to win....... their playoff appearance, along with a buck and a quarter, will get me on the bus, and thats about it.

ReplyDeleteChris Walendin is the best in the blogging business when it comes to Rule 5 draft and Minor league FA material.
If he's reporting that Puello is safe....I'm standing by him.....(no offense)
http://tpgmets.blogspot.com/p/minor-fa.html
that is where I was able to find Puello being out of options, but even he defines Rule 55 as having completed seven minor league seasons and Puello definitely meets that criteria, as well as the blogger saying the list can change. I have seen it reported other places that he is a FA and cannot figure out how they get around Rule 55 based on his time of minor league service
DeleteI don't tweer, but someone should tweet a keepthatpuellofellow thingy
ReplyDeleteDo not, do not, do not, understand the org's (mis)-use of Puello this year. I know these guys see him a lot more than I do, but how can a team starved for offensive OFers take a kid who absolutely dominated AA as a kid young for the league, and not give him every chance to succeed in AAA the next season? They are THAT sure that what everyone saw last year was a mirage? I mean seriously, he was a dominant force across the board over a full season. For a kid with plus tools all over the place, that doesn't seem fluky. Was it that he struggled a bit out of the gate this year (after an elongated offseason due to the suspension)? Or is there something more to the story here?
ReplyDeleteYou'd think that on a team with a limited budget, getting a kid like this to succeed at the next level would be a priority.
But nah.
And that "nah" is what frustrates a lot of fans across the board. You'd think they'd want a manager who gets the most out of game situations and develops their young kids. Nah. You'd think they'd give a real chance - before the season was shot to hell - to kids like Flores, Campbell, etc. when the guys playing at the ML level are clearly below replacement level. Nah. You'd think that, at least now that the season really IS over, they'd shut down (or at least stop over-using) a valuable piece like Mejia, who is clearly hurt and not right, or Wright, who also is clearly hurt. But Nah.
It's as if they couldn't be bothered. And I think that's what makes many of us so g-dammned angry.
Sorry for venting.

ReplyDeleteI'll send out a few tweets and get this one figured out.
Thanks a lot, I would really appreciate it and hope that I am misunderstanding the situation because I still have high hopes for Puello and believe that if given a spot, he can get to where he needs.
DeleteI hope you can confirm and hope that you are right and I am wrong

ReplyDelete@SotoC803 If, say, the Mets DFA Puello, put him through waivers, & outright him at the end of ST, he'll be Rule 55 eligible next fall.

@SotoC803 @AdamRubinESPN @matthewcerrone No, players on the 40-man roster are not eligible to become minor league FA via Rule 55.

I think this only alleviates half of my concern. For the Mets to send him back to Vegas next year, they have to DFA him because he has no options left, so he will have to clear waivers. If claimed, the Mets would have to arrange a trade with claiming team or rescind and add him to ML roster, so from that perspective, he will have to be on the 25 man roster to start next year or will face the waiver wire, where he would almost certainly be claimed, so it will not be so simple just to send him back to Vegas. It appears as if he is not eligible for Rule 55 this year (not sure why because this is his 7th year) but the tweets are a bit contradictory because it says that if they DFA him in the spring, he will be eligible next year, so the 40 man roster issue doesn't protect him then, so why should it now? either way, if he is not kept on the ML roster in the spring, they will have to DFA because he is out of options and will be subject to waivers, so the only way the Mets can keep him is if he clears (not likely to happen) or they rescind and put him on the 25 man roster. He could clear waivers and be sent to Vegas, but I cannot imagine he would make it through, so if they are intent on keeping him, he will either be on the ML team or go unclaimed on the waiver wire. If anyone claims him, the Mets will lose him or have to add to the 25 man roster, so the clock is running on him. PS- the first report on his status was reported on Metsblog via Toby Hyde, so interesting that Cerrone would contradict his own reporting
ReplyDeletePuello should be eligible for the 4th option year if I understand the 4th option year rules correctly.
ReplyDeleteFrom BaseballAmerica: "Major League Baseball grants a fourth option to teams when a player has five or fewer professional seasons under his belt but already has burned through three optional assignments. For this purpose, the Collective Bargaining Agreement credits a player with a season of service when he spends 90 or more days on the active list during a season."
Short-season leagues do not count, as the season is less than 90 days long. Additionally, Puello looks to have spent less than 90 days on an active roster in 2012, due to injuries. Thus, it looks like Puello has only 4 professional seasons lasting more than 90 days, and would be eligible for a 4th option (as, for example, Mejia and Lutz were this season.) In any event, if BA is correct that the standard is "5 or fewer seasons", then Puello would be eligible regardless of whether he spent 2012 counts as a season, as he has only spent 2010-2014 in full-season ball. I could be misunderstanding here, but as it looks to me, Puello should have a 4th option added next spring.
