John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 6/13/2020

Good Morning.  MLB makes a new proposal to the players, we have more on the Met Draft and there will be baseball in the USA starting July 3rd - the Indy American Association that is.

MLB Trade Rumors: Indy Ball American Association Announces Plan To Resume Play. It’ll begin play on July 3rd and host contests in three cities. The three hub cities — Fargo, North Dakota; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Sioux Falls, South Dakota — were selected in large part because live attendance was permissible under local regulations.

Mets Links:

CBS Sports: MLB Draft 2020 grades: Mets, Cardinals, Rays earn 'A' for solid hauls; Yankees, Red Sox among worst marks.  “The Mets draft boils down to signing three players: outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong (a defensive dynamo and potential leadoff hitter); right-hander J.T. Ginn (a possible top-10 pick before he blew out his elbow this spring); and outfielder Isaiah Greene (another centerfielder with power potential). Each has the chance to provide the Mets with a ridiculous return on investment relative to where they were selected. Say what you will about the other aspects of Brodie Van Wagenen's bold approach to running a team, but it makes for exciting draft classes.”

Tomahawk Take: Grading how Atlanta Braves NL East rivals navigated the 2020 draft. Mets “GRADE:  D if they fail to sign either Ginn or Crow-Armstrong; B if they sign both.  Their last 3 (all low-ranked) picks are obviously intended to save money to sign the top two guys, so they are certainly going to try hard to get both signed. So they are going for broke on just 2 picks... that ploy is definitely a theme as we progress through the division.”

Joe Tansey Bleacher Report: New York Mets: A-.
Fantasy Pros: Mets (B+); #1 Phillies: #2 Cardinals; #3 Rays; #4 Padres; #4 Blue Jays.

Metsmerized Online: MMO Exclusive: Harvard-Westlake’s Jared Halpert Talks Coaching Pete Crow-Armstrong. “He’s a natural center fielder. The way he moves, his first step, his reads, the way he can cheat on balls, his knack for being able to communicate all put him in the middle of the field.”

SNY.TV (Mets Blog): Mets' Pete Alonso shares an idea for socially distanced celebrations during 2020 MLB season. "Or what we should do is like use the hose to spray the person down, like the field crew hose," said Pete Alonso. "I don't know."

NY Post: International buyer emerges in possible bid to buy Mets. “According to multiple sources familiar with the market for the Amazin’s, if there are three or more bidders for the team, New York has a real mystery on its hands. However, a source familiar with the process said at least one of the suitors is international, declining to give further details.”

MLB LINKS:

SNY.TV (MetsBlog): The offer, for 72 games at 83% pro-rata, guarantees more money to players than a 50-game season at 100% pro-rata. It is the first of MLB's offers to do so.  MLB'S previous offer would have suspended draft pick compensation for free agents this winter. In the current offer, the union can decide what it wants to do with draft pick comp. The deadline for the union to accept or reject this offer is Sunday. The union will reject it. But there is hope that conversations will continue and lead to an agreement next week.

Ken Davidoff NY Post: Biting letter shows how ugly it’s getting between MLB, union. In a statement, the PA said, “Mr. Halem’s [deputy commissioner Dan Halem to his MLB Players Association] self-serving letter is filled with inaccuracies and incomplete facts. We will respond to that and the league’s latest proposal in short order. It should not be forgotten however that even MLB admits that our March Agreement does not require players to agree to further pay cuts.”

MLB.com: 6 clubs that crushed this year's Draft: 1. Tigers; 2. Marlins; 3. Rockies; 4. Orioles; 5. Padres; 6. Indians; Honorable mentions - Blue Jays; Phillies.

Yahoo Sports: As coronavirus risks resurface, MLB and players remain mired in ugly, public spat over money. “The paperwork says the team owners on Friday offered a 72-game season and an expanded postseason over which the players could make about 83 percent of their full prorated salaries. That won’t be good enough again. And so the outcome of that proposal is a few more days of games gone, another sliver of summer gone, and that’s about it.”

Joel Sherman NY Post: Player and MLB pitching coach tested positive for coronavirus. “No one would name the people who contracted the virus. But those aware of the situation say the pitching coach had the virus weeks ago and is now recovered. The 40-man roster player was described as having contracted the virus more recently, but with the belief that he has not infected anyone else involved in the game.”

ESPN.com: Alex Cora: Astros' sign stealing wasn't two-man show. "If there is one thing I am absolutely sure of, it is that it was not a two-man show. We all did it. And let me be very clear that I am not denying my responsibility, because we were all responsible."

Minor League Baseball:

ESPN.com: Teams in minors joining college wood-bat league. The Texas Collegiate League, a wood-bat summer circuit for college players, is being expanded to include several minor league franchises, the league announced Thursday. The minor league organizations that will host TCL teams include two Triple-A clubs (San Antonio and Round Rock) and three from Double-A (Amarillo, Frisco and Tulsa). All but the Tulsa team is based in Texas, where current guidelines allow for outdoor stadiums to operate at 50% capacity.

Asian Baseball:

Kiwoon Heros 3 NC Dinos 2 (Box Score). Aaron Altherr 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Aaron is back in CF for today’s game (Box Score).

Kia Tigers 6 Wizards 3. Drew Gagnon 6.2 innings, 3 runs, 5 hits, 2 BB, 5 Ks. (Box Score).

Mack’s Blast from Past: 6/13/2014: Mets 6, Padres 2. Bartolo Colon had another terrific outing and Bobby Abreu went 4 for 4 with 2 RBI.

Transactions:

New York Mets sold Al Jackson to the Cincinnati Reds on June 13, 1969.

New York Mets released Mike Birkbeck on June 13, 1995.

New York Mets purchased Trot Nixon from the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 13, 2008.

New York Mets claimed Kirk Nieuwenhuis on waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on June 13, 2015.

1965
At Shea Stadium, 20 year-old outfielder Ron Swoboda, in-route to finishing the season with 19, breaks the franchise record for home runs hit by a rookie when he goes deep off Dick Ellsworth in the first inning with a three-run homer, a poke that will provide all of the runs the Mets will score in their 3-2 victory over Chicago. Jim Hickman had established the mark with 13 round-trippers in 1962, the club's inaugural season.
1976
The Mets sweep the Giants in a twin bill at Candlestick Park, 4-2 and 4-1. The victories mark the first time in 17 tries that the team has won two games on the same day.
2012
R.A. Dickey, who gives up only a first-inning infield single for his second career one-hitter in the Mets' 9-1 victory over the Rays, breaks the franchise record for consecutive scoreless innings. The 37 year-old knuckleballer, surpassing the previous club mark of 31.2 scoreless innings in a row set by Jerry Koosman in 1973, establishes a new mark of 32.2 frames before an unearned run in the ninth inning snaps his string.

1980: Vida Blue of the San Francisco Giants defeats the Mets, 3 - 1, as Milt May hits franchise home run #9,000 for the Giants. Monte Ward hit home run #1 for the Giants in 1883, and #8,000 was hit by Bobby Bonds on September 41971.

2012: R.A. Dickey of the Mets tosses a one-hitter for a 9 - 1 win over the Rays. The only safety comes in the 1st inning, when B.J. Upton hits a high bouncer that 3B David Wright cannot field with his bare hand; the Mets appeal after the game for the ruling to be reversed to an error, but to no avail. Dickey becomes the majors' first 10-game winner this year, but before the night is out, he is joined by Lance Lynn of St. Louis, who fans a career-high 12 batters in a combined 1 - 0 shutout of the White Sox.

2013: Adam Wainwright becomes the first ten-game winner in the majors this season when the Cardinals defeat the Mets, 2 - 1. Wainwright pitches seven scoreless innings, while Matt Harvey is saddled with his first loss, in spite of a very good performance of his own.

  1. Sign the top 3, great draft. Miss on one, not so great. Reminds me of last year. If They did their homework, then they should be able to sign all three, and putting back to back draft years together like this would be excellent. If we sign all three.

  2. Tom - think they will get PCA (CAA) client. If they don't get JT then they will get #3 as that will free up $

  3. I don't understand why Jeff would openly discuss 'three more' suitors.

Is he looking for more? Less? Making this up?
