Good
Morning. Happy Birthday Aaron
Heilman. Marcus Stroman accepts qualifying
offer. Mets Interview ex-Marlins Pres. Michael Hill and info on Rule 5 Draft
prospects.

As we had
yesterday on Mack’s Mets: Marcus Stroman accepts the Mets'
$18.9 million qualifying offer.
SNY.TV:
Ripple effects of Marcus Stroman's Mets return, including impact on payroll and
Seth Lugo's role. “When you add in Stroman's $18.9 million salary, the
Mets' payroll for 2021 -- when factoring in projected raises via arbitration --
is roughly $153 million. That means they have roughly $57 million to spend this
offseason before hitting the luxury tax threshold.”

Mets Junkies: Marcus Stroman must impress in 2021.
Andy
Martino SNY.TV: Sources: Mets interview Michael Hill for top baseball job. Hill
is first candidate to interview for head of baseball operations. The former
Marlins President “earned raves in the industry for patching together a playoff
roster in 2020 after the team experienced a major coronavirus outbreak, but was
dismissed by CEO Derek Jeter at the end of the season.”
Reflections
On Baseball: Mets GM: Hire Tampa Bay’s Erik Neander Before Someone Else Does.
Neander is the current general manager of the Tampa Bay Rays. He is a former
MLB Executive Of The Year winner in 2019, the same year the Rays won the award
for Organization Of The Year. At 37,
Neander hails from Oneonta, NY.
SNY.TV:
Mets’ Jacob deGrom finishes third in 2020 NL Cy Young voting as Trevor Bauer
takes home award. “Bauer basically ran away with voting, taking home 27 of
30 first place votes, and 201 voting points overall. Yu Darvish finished
runner-up with three first place votes and 123 voting points. DeGrom finished
third in voting, recording three second place votes and 23 third place votes.”
SNY.TV:
Trevor Bauer responds to Sandy Alderson’s comments: ‘It was refreshing to hear
him speak that way about me’. New Mets president recently said New York
would embrace Bauer's personality.
Mike
Vaccaro NY Post: Mets should make strong push for quirky Trevor Bauer. ”If
Bauer is willing, and if The New Boss is willing, this feel like a marriage
that almost has to happen.”

SNY.TV:
Mets Hot Stove: George Springer, Trevor Bauer are legitimate guys to keep an
eye on.
Joel Sherman NY Post: Mets may
outspend Yankees in shocking turn of events. “We may see a converging point this offseason in
which the Mets’ payroll actually exceeds that of the Yankees for the first time
in nearly three decades. With Stroman back, the Mets project to roughly a $155
million payroll for luxury-tax purposes next season. The Yanks are currently at
$175 million.”
Kevin
Kernan ballnine.com: What do Mets Fans want? “They want to be free and
clear of the Wilpons, which has happened, but this is important too, they want
to be done with the Wilpons from a mental standpoint as well. That has yet to
happen. That will take time and spending money and winning games.”
CBS
Sports: Samson: Mets fans should judge Steve Cohen after more than just one
offseason at the helm. “Judge me in a decade," Samson said.
"Don't judge me after 2020. Don't judge after this set of free agents.
Don't make me overpay for George Springer or J.T. Realmuto because I know we could use a
catcher and left-fielder. Judge me after I've been here and you can see what
I've done for this franchise.”
Rising
Apple: The only three free agents worth overpaying for this winter. George Springer, James McCann, and Brad Hand.
Mets
Junkies: Mets Trade Target Jo Adell. “The Angels have a need at SS, a position where
the Mets can afford to move (especially if they are targeting Lindor) and a
need for a starting Pitcher. The Mets have a need for a true CF. The two might
be able to work out a trade.”
Mets
Junkies: Mets Trade Target Byron Buxton.
“Even though Buxton is a career .238/.289/.430/.719 hitter, he should
provide top notch defense in centerfield as well as both of the corner spots
and a tremendous amount of speed on the base paths”.
Mike’s
Mets: Waiting for What Happens Next. Mike talks about possible Mets targets
such as George Springer, Trevor Bauer, and Francisco Lindor.

MLB.com had every team’s top
prospect that needed to be added to the Roster or risk being lost in the Rule 5
Draft. For the Mets they had: Shervyen Newton, INF; Dedniel Nunez, RHP; Michel Otanez, RHP; Tony Dibrell, RHP; Daison Acosta, RHP; and Luis Carpio, INF (Carpio is subject to the
minor league portion and will not need to be added to another team’s MLB Roster).
The Rule 5 Draft is scheduled for December
10th.
Mets
Junkies: International Free Agency Part 1: “The IFA period runs on a fiscal
year, so it’s 19/20, 20//21 etc. and it runs from July to June.” The Mets are
in Pool C – $5.35 mil.
Elite
Sports NY: Steve Cohen Purchase Leads to Big Betting Money on Mets.
Rising Apple: One move said it all
about Brodie Van Wagenen.
It is the Robinson Cano/ Diaz/Kelenic
trade which they say: “At the time this was the wrong move and looking back now
it was definitely the wrong move. The main attraction to Van Wagenen and the
Mets in the deal was Edwin Diaz, who was coming off of a dominant
2018 season. If the Mets were one dominant reliever away from being a
championship team, this deal would have been an easier pill to swallow. The
only problem is, the Mets weren’t one piece away. The trade didn’t help the
Mets in the win column as they failed to even make the playoffs during Van
Wagenen’s tenure as General Manager.”

Al Smelzer and Gary Thurman? 2 innings and 6 ABs as Mets between them. Never heard of the first guy. And we had the wrong Thurman.
ReplyDeleteStroman will be highly motivated in a 1 year deal. For sure.
Jake did not deserve the Cy this year. Of course, if it had gone 162 games, a very good chance he would have had a three peat.
Jake can win the award for the next three years as part of winning the WS in the next 3-5 years.
ReplyDeleteIn that regard, John, I start to try to carve out what this team COULD look at with a big star approach, that I believe could get us to the WS often.
ReplyDeleteNot one, but TWO names on the transaction list that were truly spring training wonders: Kevin Roberson and Jon Nunnally.
