Mets Links:

Yesterday Francisco Lindor was introduced to the Press.  Here are clips and notes:

Mets.com: Lindor all smiles with Mets. Extension next? Star introduced to New York. First plans in new city? 'I love pizza'.

MLB Trade Rumors: Francisco Lindor Open To Extension, But Won’t Negotiate During Season.

Bradford William Davis NY Daily News: Sounds like Francisco Lindor is here to stay. “…when the Mets obtained Lindor and all his talents, they immediately put themselves on the clock. Lindor’s comments, however, should put any real fear of him leaving to bed.”

CBS Sports David Samson: Why Mets and Francisco Lindor won't have trouble agreeing to long-term deal. "By putting a timeline on it, you're saying to the owner that 'I'm open for business.' Samson said. "You know that there's already an agreement. You know that there's not one chance in the world that the Mets traded for him without knowing that they had him long term."

Joel Sherman NY Post: “Lindor’s best moment came in discussing the scourge of the pandemic...noted that following the protocols was not about just protecting a healthy, well-cared-for professional athlete, but those vulnerable around you. It was just the right tone — which was true about all his responses.”

Mike’s Mets: On Extending Lindor and Sustaining Success. “If the Mets really want to extend him, they shouldn't waste the time between now and the start of the season to see if they can get it done, even if Lindor could be convinced to negotiate with the season underway.”

Greg Prince Faith and Fear in Flushing: Zooming in on Mr. Smile.

Mets.com: Cookie [Carlos Carrasco] to meet media today, 1 p.m. ET.

Mike Puma NY Post: Mickey Callaway: Carlos Carrasco can be No. 1 caliber starter for Mets. “He’s going to do very well there,” former Mets manager Mickey Callaway told The Post on Monday. “This guy can pitch, and it’s three-plus pitches. His changeup is devastating — it’s one of the best changeups I have ever seen. He and King Felix [Hernandez], their pitch shape on that and the way it spins, it’s almost identical.”

Dave Groveman Mets360: Farewell to Andres Gimenez and Mets prospects. “Gimenez has always seemed to play heads and tails above the level of the competition of other prospects his age...Gimenez managed a steady .732 OPS in his major league debut, while providing solid defense and tons of positive energy. He will be missed.”

MLB.com: 4 teams with most to gain by adding Springer. #4 Blue Jays; #3 Braves; #2 White Sox; and #1 – Mets: “George Springer, who is projected for nearly 4.0 WAR in 2021, would not only give the Mets a bona fide starting center fielder but also improve their left-field situation, as Brandon Nimmo would shift from center to left…In his career, Nimmo has posted -14 Defensive Runs Saved as a center fielder and +5 DRS as a left fielder…Springer…has amassed +8 DRS as a center fielder in his career.”

SNY.TV: Here's why DJ LeMahieu could be a better Mets fit than George Springer. “And a perfect third base (or second base) option is still on the market, staring the Mets right in the face. His name is DJ LeMahieu, and the Mets are reportedly among the teams most interested in his services. If the Mets were to sign LeMahieu, they could use him at third base or play Jeff McNeil there and put LeMahieu at second base.”

James Schapiro Metsmerized Online: Jackie Bradley Jr. Isn’t A Perfect Fit for Mets. “2017 to 2019, meanwhile, Bradley batted .234/.318/.409, a .727 OPS and a 90 OPS+”

SNY.TV: Mets' Trevor May, Edwin Diaz ranked among Top 10 relievers in MLB. Trevor May ranked #4 and Edwin Diaz #7 on the Fan’s List.

Mets.com: Fonzie or Flores? Best games by Mets hitter. #1: “Edgardo Alfonzo: Aug. 30, 1999, at Astros - Only 13 Mets players have hit three home runs in a game. Only two have collected six hits. Only one managed to accomplish both feats on the same day...Alfonzo went 6-for-6 with three homers, driving home five runs and scoring six times in the Mets’ 17-1 rout of the Astros.”  Others mentioned - #2: Yoenis Céspedes: Aug. 21, 2015, at Rockies five-hit, three-homer, seven-RBI performance; #3: Wilmer Flores: July 3, 2016, vs. Cubs 6-for-6; #5: Alex Ochoa hits for the Cycle: July 3, 1996, at Phillies.  The #4?  Joe Foy: 5 for 5 July 19, 1970, at Giants.

The Brooklyn Trolley Blogger had a good post about this game and a rundown of the other winter leagues. This includes: “New York Mets farmhand Johneshwy Fargas was voted this season's LBPRC's Most Valuable Player unanimously.  He hit .349 with six doubles in sixteen regular-season games, four home runs with 17 runs batted in, and a .434 OBP.”

Baseball Mexico Blog: ALL LMP QFS OVER IN SIX GAMES, SEMIS OPEN TUESDAY.  Former MLB hurler Fernando Salas, now with the Naranjeros, was chosen Reliever of the Year as the LMP's postseason awards have begun trickling out…Salas was also a landslide winner as Reliever of the Year after leading the Mex Pac with 17 saves in 19 opportunities and was an important part of a Hermosillo team that is the top seed for the postseason. He had a 2-1 record and turned in a microscopic 0.74 ERA in 25 appearances, striking out 22 batters in 24.1 innings.

  1. Fonzie had almost an entire career that day.

Hendriks to White Sox - they want the World Series too.

I don't know how someone can have Trevor May at # 4 and Edwin at # 7. I would reverse that.

We got the # 1 SS in baseball and an SP 1 for two decent SS's and 2 prospects. I'm still pinching myself.

Randy Jones' age (71) has caught up to his fastball velocity.

  2. A funny Bill Shea story - I was in a CrossLand Savings Bank Audit Committee meeting around 1988, when the topic of the collapsing real estate market in Texas was in the news. S&Ls there were failing, left and right. Shea was one of the Committee members, as were several other 70+ age members of former banks CSB merged together. The head of Brooklyn Union Gas (their HQ was just just down the block) was also on it, and he sheepishly asked, "do you think that could happen here in NY?" The groups broke into loud laughter over the possibility of something that ridiculous happening here.

Well, it did happen, full blast, starting a year or so later, and finally about 4 years later, the bank was out of capital and taken over by a big bank.

Shea, who I only briefly met there, seemed like a very nice gentleman.

  3. No time to read the Kevin McReynolds article, but he was a very solid hitter who was GREAT at going into the left field corner and gunning down guys at 2nd trying to stretch singles into doubles.
