Torres is flat out the best defensive shortstop in this draft. That alone warrants a pick in, at least, the first three rounds.
I project his bat ticking up this season to move him into the second.

Teams have changed how they evaluate hitters; they've changed how they evaluate pitchers; they've even changed how they approach the draft. What they haven't changed is an affinity for pro-caliber shortstops. Torres is a smooth operator at the six; one who looks as though he was pre-programmed with what was coming next. His bat is just okay (he fanned in roughly a third of his plate appearances as an overage freshman), but he should be able to field his way into a professional career. The Rays drafted Alika Williams 37th overall last year; Torres should go in a similar range.

Torres was a slick defender back in high school, enough to put him on the draft radar for many teams (the Brewers drafted him in the 24th round) despite what was considered a light bat. He was the No. 449 prospect in the 2019 BA 500, and was on his way to a loud freshman season with North Carolina State this spring before the season ended. Torres hit .333/.369/.533 with three home runs in 17 games, showing much better offensive tools than he previously has showcased, though that line came with a 20-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio which will need to be improved. The separator for Torres is still his defensive ability at shortstop. He has exceptional hands and footwork, with twitchy actions and a strong arm that will be more than enough for him to stick at the position at the next level. Some wonder whether a below-average run tool will inhibit his defensive ability, but most scouts seem to think he’s a lock to stick at shortstop. Draft-eligible in his second year with the Wolfpack, Torres won’t have much track record at all given the coronavirus-shortened season but if he keeps hitting and cuts down the strikeouts he should go off the board among the first several rounds.
