Tom Brennan: You’ve Tried the Rest, Now Try the Best

RECENT CALLED-UP METS PITCHERS LOOK LIKE THIS

Remember that old pizza parlor slogan?

You’ve tried the rest now try the best?

Well, the Mets just tried “the rest” in Ty Adcock, and that didn’t go too well on Friday night, now did it? Bombs away.

I think it is time to try “the best”. So…

Is it Eric Orze’s turn?

Eric had bad outings in his first two games in late March and the beginning of April in frigid weather.

But, in 2024 in AAA, he has 56 strikeouts in 38 innings, and excluding those first two outings, his ERA is 3.00. Last September in AAA, 9.1 IP, 2 hits, 19 Ks, giving him 75 Ks in 47 IP over that 2023-24 span. That all works for me.

Josh Walker has struggled somewhat in his brief Mets call ups, but over the last two years in AAA, he has a 1.65 ERA in 42 outings covering 54 innings. He’s fanned 74 batters in that span, and the batting average against him the last two years is .181 and .105.  Seems he should be tried again?  He seems a suitable alternative to Diekman, if the latter is traded.

Shintaro Fujinami is rehabbing with remarkable control.  His last three outings, an inning apiece, have been perfect, and in those three innings a remarkable 26 of his 32 pitches have been for strikes.   It would seem that one more good inning like that in relief, perhaps on Sunday, and the 100 MPH hurler should be back with the Mets. Why not?

Bryce Montes de Oca has not been perfect, but his control has been remarkably good in his last few rehab outings, and control was always his bugaboo. So his rehab is going very well, too, although he had a few shaky outings. Another 100 MPH guy, if all goes well, who should be called up in July.

Tylor Megill has had a bad start on Friday night, perhaps due to the tight AAA strike zone, as he fanned 7 but walked 5 in 3.1 IP, but he obviously would be a starter call up candidate if they end up trading away 2 or 3 current starters.

We are once again, unfortunately, seeing the phenomenon known as the Brett Baty fade.

He was hitting .354 with 8 HRs and 20 RBIs on June 26 m but is down to .305 in AAA after going just 9 for 39 with no HRs and 2 RBIs since, in a stretch where Syracuse has continued to score a lot of runs, which seems indicative that opposition pitching has been mediocre at best.

Lastly, after a rough stretch, Joey Lucchesi in his last two starts went 13.1 IP, 3 runs, 6 hits, 3 walks, 13 Ks, and might be useful as a starter if the Mets go”Blow Out Sale”, or as a trade chip to another team.

Perhaps “best” is not a good word, but we’ve certainly tried “the rest.”

We had to….it was a sticky situation, created by a former Fireman of the Year in 2022 who has been a fire starter in 2023 and 2024.  He’ll be back today.  Whoopee.

  1. Diekman had a fine 2.18 ERA last year with the Rays, but 7.94 with CWS earlier in 2023. But 5.04 as a Met in 2024. In 2022, ERA was 6.52. He is being paid 2.25 million. Try something else. Last 14 outings, 8 innings, 10 runs. 8 of 18 inherited runners scored this year. Good enough to be lousy.

  2. My belief is there will be two new pen members in this organization by the end of this month

  3. Mack, unless it is a fluke, one of them has to be Fujinami. We will see how his next outing goes. Mind you, I expected nothing out of this guy. He was completely wild in the spring. Now he’s throwing strikes like Greg Maddox, at least on paper.

    1. I meant both from OUTSIDE the organization

  4. I still look at our SPs, 4 of which (including Lucchesi) are LH. As of now, Diekman is our only LHRP, and probably won't be here for long.
Between Q, Manaea, Peterson and Lucchesi we can find 2 who can do the job in the pen.

I'm satisfied with Diaz, Otto, Nunez, Garrett, Reid-Foley (when he returns, hopefully very soon) , Butto, and (surprisingly) Houser from the right side.

As Tom correctly pointed out, we can keep a close eye on Orze, Walker, Fuji, and MdO.

Any outside help that has quality to offer will be very costly. Why look for unproven talent when we have plenty in our system? Three weeks is plenty of time to assess our own talent before looking elsewhere.

  5. Mack, and I’ll, I agree with Mack IF we are still vying for a Wild Card. If the Mets’ losing spiral returns, this season will be flushed and many players with it.

  8. To be honest, right now I really watch only to see Alvarez and Vientos. They are both must see TV for me. T he rest not so much, unless Scott is pitching. Rooting for the kids to do well

  9. Orze was recalled today, replacing Adcock. But that still leaves Diekman as the only LHRP, which I do not like at all.

4 LHSPs and 1 (very weak) LHRP is a very bad mix IMO.

  10. Good for Orze. Walker next? Or Jay III?

  11. The faltering Mets face the Pirates again. Pitching for the Pirates? Falter.

  12. Happy 17th birthday to Roybert Herrera. He turned 17 less than a week ago, and went four for four with FOUR runs scored in the DSL today.

  13. Remember when Gary Cohen used to describe centerfield being patrolled by Juan Legares as a place "Where extra base hits go to die". Well right now the Mets' bullpen is a place "Where multiple run leads go to die". We need relief from these relievers.
