John From Albany – Mets News and Breakfast Links 11/21/2020

Good Morning.  Happy Birthday Tom McCraw, Bill Almon, and Dick Schofield. The Mets don’t add Rule 5 eligible players to 40 Man Roster but they sign a free agent pitcher and one prospective GM is not a candidate.

Mets Links:

The 6 PM deadline to add players to the 40 Man Roster or the AAA Roster came and went yesterday.  While Baseball America detailed all the players other teams added to their rosters, the Mets were quiet on the Major league front but did add a significant number to their AAA roster to keep them from the Minor League portion of the draft.  This included players like Michel Otanez; Daison Acosta; Harol Gonzalez; and Wilmer Reyes . We will have the full list later today on Mack’s Mets.

MetsJunkies: Baseball 101: MLB Rule 5 Draft – 2020 Edition.

NY Post: Mets sign pitcher Sam McWilliams in telling free-agent move. “For an organization starved for depth throughout the minors, signing McWilliams is the first indication of how the Mets will invest in lower-level players.”

Newsday: Righthander Sam McWilliams, listed at 6-7 and 230 pounds…The Mets are likely to try McWilliams, 25, as a reliever, a source said..He features a fastball touching 99 mph, a high-spin slider and a changeup…McWilliams comes with all of the team-control rights of a player who came up through the Mets’ own farm system, including three years in which he can be optioned to and called up from the minors and six total major-league seasons of team control. His 2021 salary, if he is in the majors, is $750,000, according to multiple reports.”

SNY.TV: Sources: Cleveland GM Mike Chernoff is not a candidate for Mets job. Former Miami Marlins president Michael Hill remains the only known interviewee since Steve Cohen and Sandy Alderson took control.

Empire Sports Media: Agents have heard from the Mets ‘a lot’ despite the fact they haven’t hired a president of baseball operations.

CBS Sports: Why the Mets' Steve Cohen sounds exactly like the kind of owner Major League Baseball needs. “Cohen seems to care about the standings more than the bottom line, which is quite refreshing.”

Rising Apple: Will the Mets international spending change under Steve Cohen? “The Mets are projected to have $5,348,100 in international spending money for this upcoming signing period [it starts January 15, 2021]… It was stated last year by the Mets International Director of Operations Rafael Perez that the organization was looking for “quantity over quality” in regards to international free agents… However, interestingly enough the number one ranked international free agent is none other than Yoenis Cespedes younger half-brother Yoelqui Cespedes.

Amazing Avenue: The case against the Mets making trades this offseason. “With free agent prices heavily depressed, $38 million could go a long, long way…it’s simply not worth trading any real assets, even a non-elite prospect, to take it [additional large salary contracts] on.”

PitcherList.com: Maybe the Correct Choice for NL Cy Young Wasn’t Trevor Bauer. Looking at advanced stats and the teams they pitched against writer Michael Ajeto would have voted Jacob deGrom 1, Yu Darvish 2, Trevor Bauer 3.

Faith And Fear in Flushing summarize all of their Mets for all Seasons posts.  Form Richie Ashburn in 1962 to Tommie Agee in 1970 to Dwight Gooden in 1985 to Pete Alonso in 2020 and Steve Cohen in 2021.

Fansided.com: Mets: 3 free agents to sign and 1 to avoid this offseason. George Springer, J.T. Realmuto, and Trevor Bauer are the recommended signees. Cory Kluber is suggested to avoid.

Rising Apple: Three best moves from the Brodie Van Wagenen era. 3) Having Pete Alonso on the Opening Day roster in 2019;  2) Quietly acquiring infielder J.D. Davis; 1) Extending starting pitcher Jacob deGrom.

1970

Mets' center fielder Tommie Agee becomes the first non-pitcher to win a Gold Glove in each league. The New York flycatcher, who joins the selection of flycatchers Pete Rose and Roberto Clemente for NL honors, also won the prestigious award for fielding with the White Sox during his 1966 Rookie of the Year season.

1972

The BBWAA selects Mets southpaw Jon Matlack (15-10, 2.32) as the National League Rookie of the Year. The 22 year-old West Chester, PA native becomes the second player in team history to win the award, joining teammate Tom Seaver, who copped the honor in 1967.

1983

Mets' outfielder Darryl Strawberry breaks Los Angeles' four-year stronghold on the Rookie of the Year Award when he becomes the first non-Dodger to win the honor since 1978. Rick Sutcliffe, Steve Howe, Fernando Valenzuela, and Steve Sax had been the previous winners.

2009

Responding to the fans' ire that little was done to commemorate the team's past at Citi Field, the Mets announce the entrances now will be named for the persons who have had their number retired by the franchise, Gil Hodges, Tom Seaver, and Casey Stengel as well as naming the outfield bridge in honor of William Shea. Additionally, the venue will feature a team Hall of Fame and Museum, a display of full-color banners of Mets players in front of the Jackie Robinson Rotunda, and the light poles in the parking lots will feature team logos.

  1. The Sam McWilliams deal is very favorable to the Mets. Now all he has to do is become good enough.

    Wilmer Reyes survives.

After reading the Nolan Arenado articles, I am much more inclined to have the Mets try to acquire him. The theory is that once you are out of Coors, your hitting everywhere else sharpens. And he has the super-elite defense.

  2. Maybe a deal involving McNeil and JD Davis or Rosario for Arenado. Jeff would be a cheap, incredible hitter at Coors Field.

You've got to give to get. Of course, check out all less costly options first.

  3. Unless he gets traded to the Dodgers, I think Arenado will opt out after next year. Then, the Mets would be able to get him. I would be hesitant to trade depth until we see what the non-tender market looks like. It could be very interesting and Free Agent $ may go a long way.

Besides Wilmer Reyes, one of your favorites was also added to the AAA Roster, Jose Peroza. I think the two catchers that I highlighted previously, Andres Regnault and Wilfred Astudillo could get selected in the minor league portion. More at 9:30.
