Martino SNY.TV: Memo to promising MLB execs: The Mets have a really good job
opening!!! Baseball has become too
risk-averse. “Sadly, MLB front offices are now often defined by a general
emphasis on efficiency, caution and conservatism. We see it in the lack of
blockbuster trades and contracts. We see it in the scam of extended rebuilds
that often lead only to extended mediocrity.”

1961 |
The Mets purchase outfielder Richie Ashburn from the Cubs.
The veteran outfielder, who will be the club's first-ever representative on
the National League's All-Star team, will be given a boat after being named
the Most Valuable Player of the last-place team, which unfortunately will
sink before he uses it. |
1983 |
Southpaw Sid Fernandez is traded by the Dodgers, along
with utility infielder Ross Jones, to the Mets in exchange for
infielder/outfielder Bob Bailor and left-hander Carlos Diaz. 'El Sid' will compile
a 98-78 record along with a very respectable ERA of 3.14 during his ten-year
tenure with New York. |
2005 |
Julio Franco, the oldest player in the major leagues,
signs a two-year deal with the Mets. The 47 year-old is the last active
player who was born in the 1950s. |
1976: The Cubs acquire OF Greg Gross from Houston for infielder Julio Gonzalez. Then in a three-team deal, the Cubs also get OF Jim Dwyer from the Mets for 1B Pete LaCock. LaCock then goes to Kansas City for OF Sheldon Mallory who goes to New York.
1977 - The Rangers engineer a series of deals with the Braves, Mets, and Pirates, unloading a total of six players and getting three in return. Among those involved are 1B Willie Montanez (from Atlanta to New York), Bert Blyleven (from Texas to Pittsburgh), Al Oliver (from Pittsburgh to Texas), and 1B John Milner (from NY to Pittsburgh).
2011: The 2011 Rule V draft is held to close out
this year's Winter Meetings in Dallas, TX. Houston selects
right-handed reliever Rhiner
Cruz from the Mets with
the top pick, one of 8 pitchers taken in the major league phase of the draft.
Among the few well-known names selected is former top pitching prospect Aaron Poreda, drafted by the Pirates from the Padres in
the minor league portion of the draft.

Remarkable that the Mets once signed 47 year old Julio Franco to a 2 year deal - sounds like WIlpon craziness.
ReplyDeleteNo one wants to put a successful team on the field in 2021 more than Steve Cohen, so keep hope alive.
I would much prefer McCann over Realmuto if getting McCann allows us to make one other big move that wouldn't happen if we spent huge on JTR.
We will see what happens Tom. I still think a big number of players will sign before 12/31 for Tax purposes but it sure has been slow so far. I think the Remote settings and Zoom calls play into it.
ReplyDeleteI read that article in Rising Apple about that catcher Tromp. I didn’t see what writer saw and I wound up wondering if he wrote that article with a straight face. I doubt it.
ReplyDeleteGus - It seems like a reach. I am still firmly on team Nido. I see him playing 50-60 games no matter what free agent Catcher they sign.
