I guess that moving Oswalt and Ali Sanchez off the 40 man roster says a lot about both. In a Wilpon world, they'd still be on the 40 man this year. We're upgrading.
I guess, conversely, they think more of Pat Mazeika than of Ali Sanchez. The Sanchez move also seems to move the hot off-season hitting David Rodriguez further up the catching rankings in Metsdom.
Tom - the first thing I thought when Ali Sanchez was DFA'd was that D-Rod had passed him on the depth chart. Plus remember how Ali fell asleep behind the plate and the Marlins stole home on him? Not a good look by a defensive first player.
Hopefully Mazeika is also not a DFA candidate. Mazeika has more minor league hits than Ks - believe it ir not that is rare these days. Insane.
Speaking of Ks - Lee has good on base #'s in the minors due to a good eye - but if he just shortened his swing with two Ks and put the ball in play, he'd easily hit .300.
You guys got it covered - Lee's K's are a concern, but I like the spray chart and the speed. I haven't seen his fielding stats and don't know where he slots, other than something that said "he could play cf". Depending on the other PTBNL, this seems like a sound pick up.
He looks like a guy that Davis can work with.
Could he be a Nimmo replacement if they cannot sign Brandon after 2022? Or even depending on what happens with Conforto.
How the heck is Nimmo BEHIND Smith and Alonso on this list? Come on already with the Alonso love - a one tool player - and a player that just just showed up after years of struggle. Not knocking Smith but Nimmo is more a known product.
This is why I say trade Alonso NOW, there’s only downside to him.
I love the Lee trade -- so unusual for Sandy that I'm sure it wasn't his work, but the work of the staff, which is just as good to me.
This is not the kind of trade he ever made in 7+ previous years.
It's a minor deal, maybe amounts to nothing, but directly addresses need.
The KEY was that the Mets included money in the deal, essentially using a prospect + cash to receive a better prospect in return.
Which, again, is one of the many ways that wealth can help the Mets. It's not just payroll. It's technology, it's scouting, it's deals like this.

Gus,
I share some of your concerns about Pete, but you aren't being at all realistic. He's not traded and it would be bad, bad business, upsetting the fans.
The ground has not been prepared.
But also: You are completely wrong to say "there is only downside with him."
You don't know that. What if he repeats his 2019 season? What if his fielding improves, as he has vowed. What if he manages to hit .260 BA, take his walks, and still earn peanuts?
That's a huge asset.
We can debate where the THINK he's going to go as a player, but nobody knows.
In addition, to trade Pete you'd also need to KNOW that Dominick Smith is totally for real, a Top Ten 1B. That the Covid season was the full story.
In both cases, I personally feel any certainty -- and anybody he pretends otherwise is just shouting an opinion.
Pete clearly has huge upside. I don't rush to trade a young, 50-HR guy.

This is pretty cool . . a lot of different Mets fans and everybody thinks differently.
I actually can see both Gus and Jimmy's points. I think Gus's point the other day is worth reposting .. there are 5 tools for a player - hit for average, hit for power, arm, fielding and speed.
I might add a couple others at this point - OBP and non-measurable qualities.
Now for the discussion - Alonso certainly has the hit for power tool, and I'd give him a half point for hit for average, if he can maintain his .250-.260 range. Other than that, Gus has a great point: Pete is not a 5 tool guy. He will though, be my poster child of the non-measureable quality, both on and off the field. His fan attraction qualities are high and on the field, his sheer power potential gives protection to the hitter(s) in front of him in the lineup.
Now if we talk about Nimmo, arguably he really has none of the 5 classic tools. He does have good OBP numbers and is a high-character guy and high energy in the dugout.
My perspective is that Smith is the best of the three - decent fielder (at first base), better average than Alonso, and better power than Nimmo.
With all that said (not sure actually WHAT it said), but a couple key questions:
(1) People are in love with the record 53 homers he hit as a rookie. Would they still love him if he hit 48? 43? 38? Where is the line? The extrapolation of his 16 last year yields a 162 season of about 43. Is that enough to feel strongly about him?
(2) What would he return in a trade? Could they get a good team control pitcher such as Luis Castillo for him? Would Blake Snell have been realistic? Shane Bieber? I really don't have a sense of that. For some reason, it feels like we'd need to get a borderline superstar back, but . . .
69. Lee has been rated as a below average fielder splitting time in CF and RF. His arm and speed compensates for any other deficiencies. I think RF will be his best spot going forward. He has the tools to put it all together. I am thinking he will get the full year at AAA. Can the Mets help him improve? We will see.
The ship has sailed for trading Pete this offseason. It's not done this time of year. It's all fan blather with no relation to reality.
And in fairness to Sandy, the uncertainty surrounding the DH has really put him in a difficult position. There's still a very real chance that it happens in 2021 -- should MLB just wake up and not make every detail and DEATH MATCH NEGOTIATION.
How do you build a team with that kind of confusion?
If DH, wouldn't Pete be a decent guy to have around? You want to give up on him? Seriously?
And will the DH return in, say, 2022?
I see Pete as a 40/100 guy. Not a player I love, personally. But way better than Duda.
Oh: I think it's nutty to look at players strictly through a 5-tool measurement. It takes all kinds to build a team, a unit, a collective. One guy with an outstanding tool can be extremely valuable for the whole.
Nimmo is at least a 4-tool player -- with one exceptional, truly valuable tool that's not listed in the "big 5."
