Familia pitches 1-2-3 inning, Drury stays hot as Syracuse Mets win 9-5, on Tuesday night

Brandon Drury watches his home-run ball fly over the left-field wall in the bottom of the first inning on Tuesday night (Herm Card)

Syracuse, NY - Behind another strong game from Brandon Drury, the Syracuse Mets and three of their major-league rehabbers took the series opener against the Rochester Red Wings with a 9-5 win on Tuesday night at NBT Bank Stadium. Drury went 3-for-3 from the plate with a home run, double, single, walk, and two RBIs.

New York Mets star Jeurys Familia, who played the first game of his Major League rehab assignment, started the game for Syracuse and delivered a 1-2-3 top of the first inning. Familia is one of three New York players who played in tonight’s game for Syracuse along with Brandon Nimmo and Tómas Nido.

Syracuse (13-35) exploded with a five-run bottom of the first inning. Nimmo led off with a walk, and then Nido singled to center field advancing Nimmo to third. Next, Khalil Lee drove in the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Mets up, 1-0. Drury followed and blasted a two-run homer off Red Wings starter Rogelio Armenteros to left-center field to make it 3-0 Syracuse. It was Drury’s third home run in his last four games. That wasn’t all for the Mets in the first as Mason Williams hit a one-out double. After Cheslor Cuthbert struck out, Wilfredo Tovar hit his third home run in the last week, this one over the left-field wall to extend the Mets lead to 5-0.

Rochester (20-29) got on the board in the top of the third. Armenteros led off with a single off Mets pitcher Vance Worley. After Blake Swihart flew out, Yadiel Hernandez connected on a double to advance Armenteros to third base. Carter Kieboom then grounded out but brought home Armenteros to make it 5-1 with Syracuse still in front. Daniel Palka followed and hit a two-out RBI single to center to score Hernandez and cut the deficit to three, 5-2.

Syracuse responded with a run in the bottom of the third. With one out and no one on base, Drury stayed hot with a double to right field. After a Williams strikeout, Cuthbert hit a two-run double to center to score Drury and increase the Mets lead to four, 6-2.

In the top of the fourth, Rochester quickly made it a three-run game once again when Brandon Snyder hit a solo home run to left field to make it 6-3 with Syracuse still in the lead.

The Mets took their four-run lead back in the fifth. With two outs and no baserunners, Drury reached base again, this time with a walk. Williams followed with his second double of the evening to bring home Drury and give Syracuse a 7-3 lead.

In the sixth, Snyder hit another leadoff solo home run to bring Rochester within three again, 7-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, Tovar and Calixte started the innings with a walk and a single, respectively. Gabe Klobosits came out of the bullpen to relieve Armenteros, and after a successful sacrifice bunt from Worley, Nimmo reached on a fielding error by second baseman Jake Noll. Tovar and Calixte both scored on the play to make it 9-4 Mets.

In the seventh, Swihart led off with a triple. Hernandez followed with an RBI single to bring Rochester within four, 9-5. Worley limited the damage, finishing the seventh without allowing another run and ending his night with six innings pitched, allowing five runs on eight hits, walking two, striking out two, and earning the win in his second appearance with Syracuse.

After delivering a scoreless eighth inning, Nick Tropeano came back out for the ninth to close it out for the Mets. After a one-out single by Palka, the game ended after Noll swung and missed at a ball in the dirt, and Mets catcher Martin Cervenka delivered a strike to second base to catch Palka out at second base for the game’s final out. The Mets improved to 5-2 against Rochester this season after the 9-5 series-opening win.

Syracuse will look to continue their success against their thruway rivals on Wednesday night when right-hander Jesús Reyes takes the bump for the Mets against left-hander Josh Rogers for the Red Wings. First pitch from NBT Bank Stadium is set for 6:35 p.m.

Mack's Mock Pick - #53 - SS - Carson Williams

Carson Williams

Mack's spin -

A second tier prep shortstop.

A team might want to draft him as a pitcher, but Williams loves to hit. And he is godd at it and getting better every day. ++ power projection will move him him to third before he turns pro.

Carson Williams, SS/RHP, Torrey Pines HS, San Diego—NR

There’s been a lot of recent chatter about Williams, who is a two-way player committed to California. A shortstop and righthander, some scouts prefer Williams and his 92-95 mph fastball on the mound at the next level, but he reportedly prefers hitting and has shown impressive power so far this spring. After adding more weight in the offseason, evaluators are putting plus power grades on Williams, who has been mis-hitting balls and still sending them over the fence to the pull side. A shortstop now, scouts think Williams might have to eventually move to third base as he continues to fill out and add weight. With plus arm strength, he should be able to make the position work and seems to now have the power to profile there.

‘21 SS Carson Williams (CA) certainly looks the part at short.

Easy plus arm strength w/ dynamic athleticism & advanced glove2hand.

Bounced around in pregame while putting a show from all angles

Carson Williams, SS/RHP, GBG Navy

Williams was one of the breakout stars of the event as he crushed baseballs all weekend en route to the MVP award after a championship victory. He’s got all kinds of athleticism that play both within the swing itself and off the mound where he impressed earlier in the week working 90-94 mph with some serious arm speed.

Carson Williams, SS, GBG Navy 2021

Williams came into the championship as the 148th ranked player in the 2021 class with a ride to California but took his game, and likely his ranking, to the next level by winning the MVP for the champion GBG team.  Williams hit .417 in eight games with four extra base hits, eight runs scored and 10 RBI.  To highlight his all-around tool set, he also picked up a three inning save, working 91-94 mph with his fastball to go with a low to mid-80s slider while throwing 73% strikes.

 Prep Baseball Report -

3/27/19 - 2020 Torrey Pines RHP/INF Carson Williams is listed at 6-foot 155 pounds and presents an slim-athletic build with room for growth. Williams has appeared in 5 games for the Falcons making 3 starts over 24 INN and striking out 25 while compiling a 1.75 ERA 1.25 WHIP and 232 OBA. Making his biggest start of the season he looked poised and confident despite allowing 8 hits and 5 runs (3 earned) over 4 ⅔ innings. Showed some rhythm in his mechanics while keeping his shoulders level, lower half inline and overall good body balance. Lower half is underutilized, lacking lower half extension and push towards home plate. Fastball showed arm-side run in the 80-84 mph range and was effective when located down in the zone. Displayed a breaking ball with good feel for the pitch in 71-74 mph range that broke on a 11/5 plane with sharp late movement down in the zone with the same arm speed and release point as his fastball. Change-up was flashed a handful of times in the 74-76 mph range in off-set timing attempts but without swing and miss downward movement. Young pitcher with poise gaining valuable innings and putting himself in position to potentially burst onto the scene in his junior and senior seasons.
