The New York Mets announced the promotion of Stefan Welch to High-A St. Lucie and the Savannah Sand Gnats will receive Jordan Abruzzo in exchange for the Australian first baseman.
Abruzzo, 24, played in five games for High-A St. Lucie after spending the majority of the season in Extended Spring Training. The San Diego, Calif. product was a key cog for the Sand Gnats as a SAL All-Star in 2008 hitting .300 in 54 games for Savannah with five home runs and 30 RBIs.
The 20-year-old Welch hit .239 in 26 games played in Georgia’s First City with five multi-hit games including a three-hit effort in his last game as a Sand Gnat on Sunday night in Greenville.
Abruzzo is active for tonight’s 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game series against the Lexington Legends. The Gnats return home for an eight-game homestand beginning Monday, July 14 at 7 p.m. against the Kannapolis Intimidators at Historic Grayson Stadium.
