Minor League Rotations - Mid-Season Analysis

This is a quick look at the minor league rotations so far this season and what I think might be a direction to go. I’m not a big fan of rushing minor leaguers, but, at the same time, I don’t like holding up the progress of someone who has showed he is well above average at a certain level. Move em’ up so we can see what they got.

One caveat. Normally, I would strongly suggest that Jenrry Mejia be sent to Buffalo and placed in their rotation for the remainder of the season; however, I’m starting to notice that he’s starting to become a one-pitch guy with some cut movement on his nasty fastball. One pitch nasty fastball guys with cut movement have done very well in NYC… and, with K-Rod being owed $17.5mil in his 2012 option year, my first suggestion would be to train Mejia as the future closer replacement, opped out of the last year at a $3.5mil level, and save $14mil.

AAA – Buffalo: - Pat Misch (5-2, 3.58, 1.21), Dillon Gee (6-4, 4.99, 1.38), Dylan Owen (3-2, 5.73, 1.48), Bobby Livingston (2-7, 4.90., 1.46), Tobi Stoner (3-6, 5.30, 1.56) - first of all, only Misch offers the Mets any possible fill-in starter in Queens. Niesen is having a good AAA season, but needs to stay here and pitch every fifth game for the rest of the season. Owen is experiencing what most minor leaguers that get to this level go through and should also be left alone. Livingston has no future as a Mets starter and Stoner should remain in the rotation for the remainder of the season to try and turn things around.

AA-Binghamton: - Eric Niesen (1-3, 3.49, 1.52), Chris Schwinden (1-4, 7.01, 1.52), Brad Holt (1-5, 10.20, 2.20), Mike Antonini (4-5, 4.26, 1.11), John Stinson (4-1, 2.66, 1.11) - Niesen is off to a very good season here and, after coming back from injuries, should remain here for the rest of the season. Antonini’s numbers may look large, but he has settled down and is ready to move on. The big news here is the addition of Stinson, who should remain in this rotation for the rest of the season so we can all see if this for real. Schwinden just got here recently and is having the the typical “welcome to the new level, rookie” treatment. And then there’s Holt. If Holt wasn’t a prospect, he would have been long dropped from this rotation, but I expect the Mets to give him the rest of this season to develop a secondary pitch worthy of his remaining a starter. If not, he will go to a closer role next year.

A+ - St. Lucie: - Jeurys Familia (0-4, 6.91, 1.74), Robert Carson (5-4, 4.57, 1.62), Eric Beaulac (2-1, 3.77), Kyle Allen (5-3, 4.55, 1.53), Scott Moviel (2-6, 6.83, 1.79) - not much good has come out of this rotation this year… Beaulac is having a decent year, but needs the rest of the season here to mature… Carson is beginning to show a return to his Savannah days, but he’s far from ready for the AA level… room needs to be made for at least two starters from Savannah, which doesn’t bode well for either Familia or Moviel. I know good pitchers need to pitch through bad times, but the logjam is getting harder every day to ignore.

A – Savannah: - Armondo Rodriquez (4-4, 3.26, 1.10), Collin McHugh (2-4, 3.79, 1.28) , James Fuller (5-2, 1.95, 1.05), Mark Cohoon (7-1, 1.30, 0.94), Brandon Moore (3-4, 2.25, 0.93) - everybody on this staff deserves consideration to bump up, but you can’t promote the entire rotation on the same day? As I mentioned above, Cohoon, Fuller, and Moore should be promoted.

My suggestions for the second half of the season:

Buffalo: - release Livingston so he can hopefully hook up with an organization that could offer him a future in the majors… leave Owen alone and let him grow in the rotation… let Stoner finish out the season as a starter and, if he doesn’t show improvement, convert him next year to a long reliever … and promote Antonini to the level he should be now pitching at.

New rotation: Misch, Niesen, Owen, Stoner, Antonini

Binghamton: - as mentioned above, promote Antonini to Buffalo and replace with Mark Cohoon, directly from Savannah

New rotation: Niesen, Schwinden, Holt, Stinson, Cohoon

St. Lucie: - send both Jeuryrs Familia and Scott Moviel back to Savannah to work on their problens… promote James Fuller and Brandon Moore from Savannah

New rotation: Carson, Beaulac, Allen, Fuller, Moore

Savannah: Let Rodriquez and McHugh finish the season here… put Taylor Whittenton and Darin Gorski into the rotation… and promote Gonzalez German from Extended Camp.

New Rotation: Rodriquez, McHugh, Whittenton, Gorski, German

Did I miss something? Last year's draft had potentially two impact starters that the Mets paid overslo for. Steve Matz who had to have TJ surgery and Zach Dotson who has fallen off the face of the earth. Did he run away with $500,000 signing bonus or injured? Haven't heard anything about him and whether Mets plan to start Juan Urbina in states this year or wait until he turns 18 to bring him over here.

I too had expected to see Dotosn in Brooklyn, but I guess he'll start the season in K-Port. Both the K-Port and GCL rosters should be out next Monday.

Matz is out for the season with TJS.

I expect Urbina will start off in Florida at GCL.

Now that Holt's moved back to St Lucie, maybe, just maybe, both MARK COHOON and BRANDON MOORE will skip over St. Lucie and head straight to Binghamton? Moore's definitely the right age for AA- being 24 1/2 years of age. Cohoon will be 23 in September.
