The Phillies signed Martinez almost exactly one year ago, but the veteran right-hander was throwing regularly at the time. "A lot," said Amaro. "From the WBC on. They're different circumstances. He had thrown all the way up until now. He hasn't gotten on a mound. Only Pedro could say when he'd be ready. I'm sure he knows, but I couldn't tell you." Amaro wouldn't say there is no chance of Martinez returning, but he's obviously nowhere close to helping a major league team.

Going on to have one of the better offensive seasons in collegiate history and being selected No. 1 overall by the Washington Nationals in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft made the decision seem like a good one. On Tuesday came the icing on the cake when the 17-year-old Harper was named the 2010 Golden Spikes Award winner. Since 1978, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. The award is sponsored by Major League Baseball and presented each year to the player who best exhibits exceptional on-field ability and exemplary sportsmanship.
7-13-10 from: - link - It's not surprising that Eastern League fans voted Binghamton Mets outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis a spot in Wednesday evening's All-Star Game. Nieuwenhuis will be in the starting lineup for the Western Division team in the contest, which will be played at Harrisburg's reconstructed Metro Bank Park. A 23-year-old native of Ripon, Calif., who attended Azusa Pacific University, Nieuwenhuis was drafted by the Mets in the third round in 2008 and continues to make his mark as he climbs the ladder toward Citi Field. Not only is he in the middle of a sizzling run of .468 (22-for-47) over his last 10 games, but the Binghamton star also has put together a strong first half overall, batting .305 (96-for-315) with 14 homers and 52 RBIs. His defense has been outstanding as well.

The hype on Bryce Harper is just starting. He is finally playing pro ball, and it seems like he has all the skills that made Josh Hamilton so highly regarded out of high school.
