Tri-City 7, Brooklyn 4

Vaughn homers, but Cyclones fall, 7-4, to Tri-City

A white-hot Cory Vaughn hit his New York-Penn League-leading ninth home run in the fourth inning, but Brooklyn fell 7-4 in a loss to the Tri-City ValleyCats.

Cyclones starter Yohan Almonte allowed seven hits in five innings on Monday, while the ValleyCats scored three unearned runs off of the 20-year-old righty. The Dominican Republic native lowered his ERA to 2.37 and now has a 24/8 K/BB ratio through 38 innings pitched for Brooklyn. He has only given up one earned run in his last three outings, and the last time he gave up more than one earned run was June 23 against Hudson Valley, when he gave up four runs over 6.2 innings in a loss to the Renegades.

Vaughn, the son of former major leaguer Greg Vaughn, went 2-for-4 while driving in two runs, and extending his hitting streak to seven games. The ValleyCats will be glad to see the rightfielder leave town, as he had two hits in each game of the three-game set between Brooklyn and Tri-City. Vaughn is now batting .291 on the season with an outstanding .590 slugging percentage.

Shortstop Rylan Sandoval is having a quite a 2010 campaign, as well, and led off the game with a home run of his own to give Brooklyn the early 1-0 lead in the first inning. It was Sandoval’s sixth long ball of the year, which ties him for second place in the New York-Penn League with Jamestown’s Marcell Ozuna.

But a Sandoval error helped give the lead away in the bottom of the first, as Tri-City leadoff batter Wilton Infante reached base on a fielding blunder by the shortstop. A Tyler Burnett fielder’s choice and Michael Kvasnicka double would drive in two runs and give the ValleyCats a 2-1 lead after one frame.

Vaughn’s homer in the third would give Brooklyn the advantage temporarily, as the Cyclones led 3-2.

But another unearned run would come around for Tri-City in the fourth, tying the game, and reliever Hamilton Bennett would surrender four runs in two innings out of the bullpen, as the ValleyCats pulled away.

One of the bright spots of the game for Brooklyn was Samuel Taveras, who pitched another scoreless inning for Brooklyn. It was his fourth clean frame of the season after a solid stint in Kingsport, where batters hit just .204 against him.

The Cyclones return home tomorrow night for a three-game series with the Lowell Spinners. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
