6/2/14

St. Lucie 6 - Daytona 0

The St. Lucie Mets broke out of a week-long slump at the plate by belting 11 hits in a 6-0 victory over the Daytona Cubs on Sunday at Tradition Field.

Seven of nine Mets in the lineup had a hit and all nine reached base safely at least once. Aderlin Rodriguez broke out of a 1 for 17 slump by blasting a home run and Jairo Perez continued his hot streak by going 2 for 4 with an RBI.

The Mets came up with plenty of offense on a day their pitching was dominant. Left handed starter Steven Matz put together his second best start of the season, shutting out the Cubs over 6 2/3 innings. He allowed just four singles and struck out four.

Matz threw a season-high 101 pitches en route to his third win of the season. Only one batter reached second base against Matz.

Paul Sewald did not allow a hit in 1 1/3 inning. Beck Wheeler struck out the side in the ninth after walking the first batter he faced.

The Mets took advantage of sloppy defense by short stop Marco Hernandez. Albert Cordero scored the first run of the game in the third inning when Hernandez made a poor throw to first on an ill-advised double play attempt. The ball skipped away near the Daytona dugout and Cordero raced home from third.

Rodriguez’s leadoff solo home run in the fifth made it 2-0.

The Mets broke the game open with four runs against reliever Zack Godley in the seventh. The Mets loaded the bases with one out and got back-to-back RBI singles from Perez and Phillip Evans to make it 4-0. Then with two outs and runners on second and third, Eudy Pina grounded a routine ball to Hernandez, who threw skipped another ball to first base that escaped Rock Shoulders. Perez and Evans scored to give the Mets a 6-0 lead.

Daytona starter Tayler Scott pitched 5 1/3 effective innings and held the Mets to two runs, just one earned, in taking the loss.

Godley gave up five hits and four runs, two earned, in 1 1/2 innings.

Rodriguez, Perez, Evans and Gilbert Gomez had two-hit games for St. Lucie.

The Mets have won two in a row and improved to 33-23. They host the Cubs (20-34) again on Monday at Tradition Field. First pitch is scheduled for - team press release
