Open Thread - How would you spend remaining dollars?

According to Spotrac.com, the Mets have about $28M to spend until they hit the Luxury Tax Threshold.

What players would you prioritize right now to help the Mets complete the current MLB Roster?

Jackie Bradley Jr.? Justin Wilson? Marwin Gonzalez?

They just got Jonathan Villar, which seems like a great move. I would like Justin Wilson back. No DH? No JB Jr.

I'd also get another proven reliever besides Wilson, and add Paxton (1 year) or Tajuan Walker if he is reasonable and willing to take 1 year or, if necessary, 2 years.

They still have not answered the third base and center field questions. They still need another starting pitcher. I wouldn't mind another reliever. Villar is a relatively inexpensive pickup for the bench, but I'm not sure about him being inserted into the lineup regularly. He did have a fine season for Baltimore in 2019, but he floated between two teams in 2020 and did pretty much nothing other than contribute 16 SBs which is pretty impressive considering his bulk (232 pounds). I think the days of 60 SBs are long behind him but he is an average quality player and I'd rather have him there than Todd Frazier version 3.

Agreed....Villar was a nice bench move.

I'd also like to add Wilson to round out our bullpen. I would love them to Paxton a flier depending on his demands. I hope they pass on Arrieta, he's awful, snarly, and did I say he flat out stinks. They should also sign a back up catcher to a minor league contract....just in case.

We have to keep in mind that this is only Step #1 in establishing a dominant team for the future

Kris Bryant.

69's random thoughts for the morning:

Familia for Bryant?

Villar is a good move on the surface of it

Paxton AND Walker

No Arrieta . . If Arrietta, fans will be clamoring for Porcello!

The SNY clip on the John's daily news this morning: all three guys are spot on

I still wonder if Pete can catch a fly ball in left field. If Pete can = Dom in LF, put Dom at 1st base and improve the infield.

I have a sense that Pete would be a historically bad outfielder. Arrieta's numbers are Porcello II. I just wonder if they'd do Paxoton and Walker. Joey Lucchesi ought to bounce back in 2021, so with Syndergaard back, I am guessing, around June 1, do you over-stock your starting pitching? Maybe. In 2020, you would have wished we had one more starter. No thank you on the other Jake.

Villar probably takes Marwin Gonzalez out of play. Agreed that, without a DH, JBJ goes somewhere else.

Maybe this frees up a little extra cash for the likes of a slightly better pitcher than Arrieta or Hill (Walker would be my first choice, Paxton second). Also a reliever (Keone Kela is a name I am high on).

Kris (Mr. Launch Angle) Bryant is a no-go for me. A very expensive player who may have been figured out by pitchers. Did not get along with Chili Davis to the extent that the Cubs had to fire Davis to please guys like Bryant (who only wanted to try to hit homers).

Bob, very good point on Bryant.

Am I the only one who says sign Trevor Rosenthal and give Lugo another shot at a starting spot? His BABIP last September was .415 and ERA was 9.35, really two starts - one in Philly and one in Washington - that is what killed him. Are any of these guys left really more worthy?

You may not be the only one who thinks Lugo should start, but I'm not a fan of it.

Two things the Mets should stick with rather than moving things around. Lugo in the bullpen and Jeff McNeil at second base.

I like Lugo in the pen - without a strong pen, this team will fail. Get Rosenthal, too. SOmeone will get hurt. You need pen excess, unless they truly believe Szapucki is ready to REALLY contribute. Lugo and Gsellman were awful in 2016 in AAA before dazzling down the stretch with the Mets in 2016. It happens sometimes.

Kris Bryant only had 1 bad year.
Last year.

Covid. Broken schedules. Messed up preseason. Health & safety protocols.

If Bryant is such a bad risk after so many positive productive years on a 1 year risk, then what does that make Alonso after only 1 good year and last years bad year?

Bob G -

I wouldn't be surprised it the Mets and Cubs work out a deal for Bryant. Jarred Banner, who was the head of Player Development, with the Mets is now the VP of Special Projects with the Cubs. Jarred was high on a number of Mets prospects that others don't view as highly. While the rumor is that the Cubs are asking for Top Mets Prospect Francisco Alvarez, I can see a deal with a group of players going to the Cubs outside of the top ten. I think Jarred could target Jose Butto and Wilmer Reyes - two under the radar prospects that Jarred liked (I like them a lot as well) that Sandy may not know much about. We will see.

Not a fan of Villar, disliked him with Marlins, and he doesn't play outfield.

This will be his 5th team in 4 seasons.

Toronto had him last year, tossed him into discard pile, and is now looking at Marwin Gonzales. Again, drinking our milkshake.

Sandy is trying to put together a 3rd place team. Just another uninspired move by an out-of-touch GM.

Cohen's biggest mistake was giving Alderson all this power.

I expect a Jay Bruce signing any moment.

We already have Guillorme, you know. A guy who continually performs and continually gets disrespected by this organization. So this move is likely aimed at JD Davis -- Villar getting looks at 3B -- which is also really dumb and very probably petty on Sandy's part.

If you've seen Villar, and watched him play, and still like him -- please let me know. My impression watching him was very negative. I realize the numbers, if we discount last season's atrocity, are not too bad at all. There's a bad vibe to this guy.

I believe Sandy has completely fallen asleep on the bullpen.

This offseason presented a plethora of affordable options for turning the bullpen into an asset. The Mets got May -- a very nice start -- and picked up depth pieces while good pitchers went off the board in one-year deals.

I'm mystified.

Look: The team will still be good. There's a lot of talent out there. But Sandy did not have a strong offseason.

On Villar, one report stated:

>> Marlins felt Villar is still an extremely talented player but played reckless at times, and never fully bought in to what they are trying to do. In essence, not a fit in Miami from their perspective. <<

Baltimore had him. Said no thanks. The Marlins said, no thanks. The Blue Jays, no thanks. The Astros, nope.

And he's extremely talented. So maybe he gets his head on straight, finally.

Whatever. Everybody says it's a great signing, so I guess it is.
