8-4-11: - Stock Up – Bradley Marquez – The 2011 16th round draft pick has said that his deal with the Mets is now in the hands of the Commissioner awaiting approval. Marquez comes out of Odessa High School in Texas and was thought to be going on to college as a football player; however, it seems he has struck a deal to play for the Mets and still hit the gridiron for Texas Tech.

8-15-11: - http://www.redraiders.com/2011/08/14/red-raiders-marquez-signs-contract-with-mets - Texas Tech football player Bradley Marquez on Sunday signed a contract to play pro baseball with the New York Mets and announced plans to continue  pursuing both sports.Marquez signed a three-year contract, according to his agents with Xclusive Sports Management in Houston. They declined to release other details of the deal…  Marquez will be at Tech during the school year and report to the Mets’ spring-training facilities in Port St. Lucie, Fla., in May.

8-14-11 – The Mets signed CF Marquez who will attend Texas Tech and play football there. The Mets have agreed to pay for the school and the Mets will have him in June and July. He was drafted in the 16th round by the Mets, out of Odessa High School, in Texas

9-14-11: - http://www.star-telegram.com/2011/09/13/3365498/texas-techs-bradley-marquez-takes.html#ixzz1XvtSeqZK - Marquez is playing football this fall with the Raiders and will go through spring football drills before reporting to the Mets' rookie league in Port Lucie, Fla., in May -- 48 hours after his school session at Tech concludes. "I'll start in rookie ball and hopefully progress throughout the summer and see where I end up at the end of the summer and then go start over again next year [with football]," Marquez said. "Everybody starts at the very bottom, and you basically determine how fast you move up."  The Mets awarded Marquez a $325,000 signing bonus to be paid over the life of his three-year contract, and are paying for Marquez's education, which frees the Raiders to use that scholarship money on someone else.

9-18-11: - http://nybaseballdigest.com/?p=39990  - Marquez is trying to do better and become a pro at two sports at the same time. He is a great athlete that possesses tremendous speed. In high school he rushed for 2,210 yards and 29 touchdowns his senior year, and also was a Texas state finalist in the long jump. He will play baseball from mid-May to the end of July and then spend the rest of the year playing Big 12 football. Texas Tech signed the number one running back class in the nation this past spring so they asked Marquez to move to wide receiver. A shortstop by trade in high school, the Mets drafted him as an outfielder.

Cutnpaste: Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Chris Carter, Bradley Marquez, Johan Santana, Ruben Tejada

9-17-11: - Kirk Nieuwenhuis (Mets third-round pick in 2008): Nieuwenhuis was tearing through the International League for Triple-A Buffalo this spring when he was lost for the second half of the season with a shoulder injury. Like Havens, expect the center fielder to be kept, and possibly have a shot at winning a starting job for the Mets next season. Read more: link

Wow, Chris Carter is a big-time overachiever in the classroom. He was pre-med at Stanford (“the Harvard of the west coast”) and graduated in only three years. Needless to say, that is one hell of an accomplishment. Unfortunately, it’s been hit or miss (mostly miss) for this utility man in the Majors. Like #5 Perez, Chris is currently hanging out in the minors; however, he did manage to play in 100 games and get 180 plate appearances last year for the Mets. Though with all of their injuries in 2010, the Met’s were not much better than a minor league team. - http://www.totalprosports.com/2011/09/16/9-smartest-players-in-major-league-baseball

Prior to the 2009 season, Santana was one of the best pitchers in baseball and had a pretty good track record in regards to his health. However, since 2009, Santana has had various injuries and has not performed as well as he usually has. In 2012, Santana could return and pitch like he did during his two Cy Young seasons that he had as a member of the Twins. However, at the rate of his current track record, Santana could also have more injuries and not pitch as well as the Mets expect him to. Hopefully, for the sake of the Mets, their fans, and Santana himself, he can have a great comeback season in 2012 - http://bleacherreport.com/articles/855532-new-york-mets-will-johan-santana-ever-be-the-same-again

9-19-11: - http://metsmerizedonline.com/2011/09/with-or-without-reyes-ruben-tejada-is-a-keeper.html  - Ruben Tejada was once viewed as a light-hitting, slick-fielding middle infielder, similar to Rey OrdoƱez, although not as flashy. However, this season he has shown that he can handle the bat better than anyone expected him to, and has handled pressure situations like an established veteran. Tejada has been a model of consistency at the plate, hitting .281 vs. RHP and .276 vs. LHP. He is also hitting .272 at Citi Field and .287 on the road. His .356 on-base percentage ranks second on the team behind Jose Reyes for players currently on the active roster. Tejada has also struck out only 47 times in 339 plate appearances.

Cutnpaste: Chris Schwinden, Jason Isringhausen, CitiField Dimensions, Bradley Marquez, Jose Pagan

9-3-11: - http://metsmerizedonline.com/2011/09/prospect-pulse-buffalo-2012-help-on-the-way.html  - SP4: Chris Schwinden - Schwinden has emerged as the “ace” of the Buffalo rotation this year, going 8-7 with a 3.95 ERA in 25 GS. He has put himself squarely on the “prospect map” as a RHP in the Dillon Gee mold. The chief difference between the two, is where Gee relies heavily on his change-up as an out-pitch, Schwinnie uses a hard-breaking curveball. He will be a super long-shot to make the Mets out of ST next year, and will probably be a “holdover” in the Herd’s rotation, but should definitely get his first big league opportunity at some point during the 2012 campaign, whether in the rotation or the bullpen is tough to say.

(Jason) Isringhausen is suffering from a herniated disk in his lower back. He last pitched on Sept. 6. With Isringhausen down, Collins has given a few more opportunities to bullpen options like Manny Acosta and Daniel Herrera. The manager is still trying to figure out his closer situation for the future. Isringhausen has said he would like to pitch in 2012. He has a 4.05 ERA in 46 2/3 innings this year. At 38, he has overcome a trio of Tommy John surgeries, a pair of hip surgeries and a laundry list of other ailments - http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2011/09/mets_notebook_reliever_jason_i.html

Amid growing speculation that the Mets will shrink the daunting dimensions of Citi Field this off-season, the issue has become an open topic of discussion among players in the clubhouse. After a recent game, David Wright lamented that he had hit “800 feet worth of doubles” and added, perhaps only half-jokingly, that he hoped such an effort would yield a couple of home runs next season. Until now, hitters like Wright have been the ones asked about the size of the park, and fans and commentators have weighed in on the merits of altering a facility that is only three years old. - http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/14/sports/baseball/the-pros-and-cons-of-altering-citi-field.html

9-14-11: - http://www.star-telegram.com/2011/09/13/3365498/texas-techs-bradley-marquez-takes.html#ixzz1XvtSeqZK  - (Bradley) Marquez is playing football this fall with the Raiders and will go through spring football drills before reporting to the Mets' rookie league in Port Lucie, Fla., in May -- 48 hours after his school session at Tech concludes. (Angel) Pagan's is too often overlooked, with some people even suggesting the absurd idea that the Mets should not tender him a contract for 2012. Pagan is undoubtedly having a down year at the plate, but he's still far from a liability. Since he began playing a significant amount of time in 2009, Pagan ranks seventh among qualified center fielders in wRC+. It's a bit concerning that Pagan's defense in center field appears to have gone downhill. UZR/150 ranks him worst in baseball at -16.9, but DRS has him at a middle-of-the-pack zero. Poor scores in both metrics are out of line with Pagan's work in 2009-2010. It's possible that the metrics are just a bit weird with him in a small sample of data, or Pagan is just human and having a not-so-great year in the field. Either way, Pagan still looks like a major league center fielder who can be retained on the cheap for next season, and the Mets don't have any obvious choices to replace him in the minor leagues. Productive big league players under team control at a reasonable cost are hard to come by, and in that respect, Pagan definitely seems underappreciated. - http://www.amazinavenue.com/2011/9/14/2423158/the-moneyball-mets-underappreciated-players-on-the-2011-team

Stock: Josh Edgin, Armando Alberto de Jesus Rodriguez, Bradley Marquez, Elvis Sanchez, Fernando Martinez

Josh Edgin:

8-14-11: - Stock Up - We continue to be proud to be the first Mets writer to recognize what the team has in this kid. He mopped up Sunday for two more scoreless innings and it’s hard to come up with better stats than he has put up this season. First, there were 16 saves in 24 outings for Savannah, producing 41K/31.0-IP and an ERA of 0.87. Now, after 18 more outings for St. Lucie, he has seven more saves, 25K/26.0-IP and a “hefty” 1.38 ERA. Together: 2-0, 1.11, 42-games, 23-saves, 57.0-IP, 66-K.

Armondo Rodriguez:

8-14-11: - Stock Up: - So much time is spent writing about the “big 4” (Harvey, Wheeler, Mejia, Familia) that people forget about the other very good developing starters in the organization. One is Rodriguez, who pitched big for St. Lucie on Sunday: 7.0-IP, 0-R7-K, 0-BB, 3-H, 3.75. The 23-year old isn’t overpowering and may be one of many pitchers (Gorski, Cuan, Peavey, Morris, Fulmer) that could be outstanding trade bait come 2013.

Bradley Marquez:

Elvis Sanchez:

8-15-11: -Stock Down: - Sanchez continues to slump in his first professional year. He went 0-3 again last night and is now batting .154 for the DSL2 team. He also played first base.

Fernando Martinez:

8-14-11: - Stock Defaulted - Fernando Martinez was placed on Buffalo DL with left wrist strain. Just shoot him.
