Draft 13 – Akeem Bostick, Jacob Heyward, Jonathan Gray, Matt Williams, Jonah Wesely

Akeem Bostick, RHP, West Florence HS (SC) - The 6’-5” right-hander has turned a lot of heads this season with an easy delivery and a fastball that has touched 95 mph. He also adds solid secondary stuff and has great body control despite his size. Over 56 innings this season, he has 96 K/25 BB and has allowed just 23 hits. He has had six double-digit strikeout games with a career-high 13 over seven shutout innings on March 5. His command is a little inconsistent but with his size, and more left in the tank as far as velocity goes, he has a lot of upside. Should be available at 77. LINK

Dan Kirby ‏@DanMKirby

Jacob Heyward and Daz Cameron on the same team is unfair to any pitcher. Heyward has 3 BB and 3-R HR, Daz is 4-for-5 w/ 2B, BB, 2 RBI.

There was a time when it looked like Mark Appel would have no competition as the top player, college or high school, available. He was in the mix for that spot last year before falling to Pittsburgh with the No. 8 pick, then was unable to come to terms with them on a deal that allowed him to return to Stanford for his senior season. Along comes Jonathan Gray, who was in the mid-first round mix when the season started, showing a fastball that has jumped an entire grade to plus-plus, plus slider and an average changeup. Now the debate for the No. 1 pick has gotten much louder. LINK

John Whittle‏ @johnmwhittle -

2013 uncommitted INF Matt Williams played 120 games in high school over five years. Had a career BA of .411, 102 RBIs, 66 BB, 17 Ks. Wow.

Jonah Wesely JONAH!!!! you gettin' ready, son?
Jonah Wesely ‏@JonahWesely- @JohnMackinAde so excited!

Draft 13 – Matt Oberste, Thomas Taylor, Jonah Wesely, Chris Okey

Matt Oberste, 1B, Oklahoma - Over his last six games, the 6’-2”, 210-pound right-hander has gone 13-for-23 (.565) with four doubles, a triple, two home runs and a .615 OBP/1.087 SLG. He is now hitting .421 over 41 games with 16 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs and a .484 OBP/.761 SLG. He most likely will play first base at the next level, putting extra emphasis on his bat.  link

Aaron Fitt  ‏@aaronfitt

Here's a sleeper for you: KU Baseball coach Ritch Price says Sr. RHP Thomas Taylor has been 90-94, down in zone, improved slider.

Jonah Wesely – Facebook:

Tomorrow is the last time I will Ever be pitching in a Tracy High baseball home game!! Everyone come out and watch us play Lincoln. Gunna be a great game

Chris Okey, Eustis HS (FL) - A very good defensive catcher with a strong arm and excellent footwork behind the plate, Okey is a polished player who is a two-time gold medal winner for U18 Team USA. There is a chance he may not be available when the Cubs pick at 41 in the 2013 MLB draft, but if he is, he should be high on their list. At 6’-1” and 190 pounds, he makes consistent contact from the right side and has a very good approach at the plate. Over 29 games this season, he is hitting .417 with six doubles, four home runs, 29 RBI and has drawn 17 walks to eight strikeouts for a .528 OBP/.679 SLG. He is also an excellent athlete with good speed, having gone a perfect 16-for-16 in stolen base attempts this season. Committed to Clemson. link

Draft 13 – Carlos Salazar, Trey Ball, Jonah Wesely, Ryne Stanek, Dillon Overton

Dan Kirby‏ @DanMKirby

Kerman HS (CA) RHP Carlos Salazar: 7 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 11 K/2 BB. Now has 0.19 ERA, 91 K/18 BB over 48.2 IP (16.9 K/9

In his last start, 6'-5" LHP Trey Ball had 11 K/0 BB, 0 ER, 2 H over 7 IP, hitting 93 mph

Tracy HS (CA) LHP Jonah Wesely's last 3: 18 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 43 K/6 BB (21.5 K/9), includes an 18 K no-no

Ryne Stanek, RHP, Arkansas - Through his first five starts, the 6’-4” right-hander had a 3.75 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 20 K/13 BB over 21.2 innings. His stock was plummeting as people questioned his control and ability to go late in games as his 4.2 IP/per start was concerning for someone considered a frontline starter. Over his last five starts, he has clearly quieted critics and has placed himself back in talks for the top 5-10 picks in the 2013 MLB draft. Over that span, he has a 0.54 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 32 K/8 BB over 33.2 innings. link

ChasingOmaha.com‏  @ChasingOmaha6h

News out of Norman that Dillon Overton, potential first round pick, has an inflamed elbow, out for 2-4 weeks.

4/24/13

Draft 13 – Jonah Wesely, Kris Bryant, Casey Shane, Brett Morales, Clint Frazier

Jonah Wesely, LHP, Tracy HS (CA) - On April 18, the 6’-2” southpaw tossed a no-hitter, striking out 18 over seven innings. He had struck out 11 to no walks over five shutout innings in his previous start and is hitting his stride as the season goes on. Overall, he now has 80 K/16 BB over 44 innings, allowing 23 hits. He features a low/mid-90s fastball with late life and one of the best curveballs in the 2013 MLB draft. A high baseball IQ and great mound presence make him one of the better prep arms available. Committed to UCLA. link

Dan Kirby ‏@DanMKirby

San Diego 3B Kris Bryant has 5 HR and 10 BB over his last 6 games, mostly from the leadoff spot. Leads nation with 20 HR

Centennial HS (TX) 6'-4" RHP Casey Shane had 7 K over 3 shutout IP on Saturday. Now has 67 K/6 BB (18.7 K/9), 17 H over 32.1 IP

King HS (FL) RHP Brett Morales' last start: 6 IP, 0 ER, 1H, 13 K/1 BB. Now has 0.62 ERA, 83 K/18 BB, 27 H over 58 IP.

Clint Frazier 2-for-4 w/ SB. Now hitting .520 over 25 games w/ 3 2B, 3 3B, 13 HR, 37 RBI, 16 SB, .611 OBP/1.143 SLG

Draft 13 Mailbag - HS-LHP, Brady Corless, Jonah Wesely, HS-RHP

Tim asked: “Are you guys going to do something like this for the LHP’s? That would be a very interesting debate!”

Mack: – Left-handed pitchers are rising on the projected draft lists, led by a group of promising high school seniors that fall into three categories.

‘A’ – projected first rounds are led by Chrysler HS (IN) Trey Ball, Cathedral Catholic HS (CA) Stephen Gonsalves, and Englewoods Cliffs HS (NJ) Robert Kaminsky.

‘B’ – are projected late first day and second day picks, led by Washington HS (IA) A.J.Puk, James Madison HS (CA) Ian Clarkin, Calgary Baptist HS (LA) Garrett Williams, Tracy HS (CA) Jonah Wesley, and Tampa Jesuit HS (FL) John Kilichowski.

‘C’ – are projected later on second day picks like Piketon HS (OH) Zach Farmer, Joliet Catholic HS (IL) Kevin Duchene, Sarasota HS (FL) Dylan White, Hillsborough HS (CA) Matt Krook, N. Florida Christian HS (FL) Carson Sands, Ida S. Baker HS (FL) Sean Brady, Head-Royce HS (CA) Steven Farinaro, and Parkway South HS Jake Brentz.

Tim asks: – Clarkin and Wesely are my top 2 LHP’s for high schoolers. Kamisky isn’t far behind either. What do you guys think? Who gets drafted higher between Wesely and Clarkin?

Mack: – You’re asking questions during a time period prior to the season that will surely determine the draft order of all these guys. It’s so hard to project players in December, but I will tell you this… Wesely is getting a lot more press right now (which ironically started with my ‘Q and A’ a few months ago :). Either way, both will be gone after the first day.

Pete asks: – Its very interesting reading what you experts have to say about these prospects.5 years from now.. What HS pitchers are we going to look back on and say, yeah that was a great pick from the 2013 draft? Who’s got the mental and physical upside that makes it from this class?

Mack: My money is on Brady Corless, simply based on how he approaches this game. He quickly came to realize that playing his senior year in high school was not going to advance his goals, so he went out and got his GED, enrolled in some small college, and made himself eligible for the draft one year earlier. I love this kind of moxie.

Tim asks: – And I feel like Make-Up is huge in today’s draft. Those 5 or 6 polished southpaws are so good this year. Anyone know what type of kids Wesely, Clarkin, or Kaminsky are? Work ethic? Etc..

Mack: I can only speak to one of these guys, who I have gotten to know. Jonah Wesely is a stand-up guy that has a tremendous work ethic that makes me tired just listening how hard he is preparing himself for the upcoming season.

Tim asked: – In your guys opinion, who are the HS 1st round pitchers next June??

Mack: I covered the lefties in the first question of this post.

Righty wise, my guess would be (in no particular order) Woodford HS (KY) Clinton Hollon, Tullahoma HS (TN) Jordan Sheffield, and St. Pius X HS (TX) Kohl Stewart. Stewart could go top 5 and one more guy, Cullman HS (AL) Keegan Thompson could also sneak in.

2013 Draft-Notes – Kendall Rogers Stuff, John Rhodes, Jonah Wesely, Other Stuff

Florida A&M President Resigns in Wake of Hazing Scandal…

Todd Gold‏ - 2013 RHP Kyle Serrano (Farragut HS, TN) sat 88-89, touched 90 when felt like it. Long loose arm, easy velo, good secondary stuff

Andrew Hartwell‏ - After seeing all my stitches, my kids called me Frankenstein.

Kendall Rogers‏ - Illinois 2013 commit, SS/P Ryne Roper intriguing to watch. Has been good at plate at WWBA, but up to 88 in solid relief today… Fellow commit, C Brad Logan, w/ good nightcap. Another talent… Just spoke to someone about OK State LHP Andrew Heaney, Marlins 1st-rdr. Confirmed indeed Miami ceased negotiations. For those saying Marlins could sign last second, Heaney has yet to have a physical. Would need one by midday tomorrow… Alabama 2013 commit Hunter Webb, Clemson 2013 commit Austin Meadows, both with two hits to keep Team Elite 17UB alive in PG Tourney… Arkansas 2013 commit, P Dom Taccolini, helped Columbia Angels get to WWBA17U Semis. Six K's, 1 R in 6 IP. Sat 89-91 FB, 75-77 CV PG Tourney…

What ever happened to John Rhodes?... The young Nebraska farm boy with blazing left-handed speed. Dude was bringing heat for Pittsburg

Congrats Jonah Wesely on your selection to the #AllAmericanClassic See you in San Diego.

Mark Appel, Stanford RHP who was the 8th pick in the recent MLB draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates turned down a $3.5 million signing bonus and will return to Stanford for his Senior year of college

Mack – this changes everything in my projected 2013 draft. Appel immediately becomes the number one pick in the draft and everyone else would fall down a slot.

Frankie Piliere‏ - Barrett Astin at 90-92 tonight, showing feel for CB/CH. Kevin Ziomek pretty nasty from left side, 90-93, big breaking ball and quality CH

Peter Gammons - Mike Yastrzemski turned down $300,000 from the Mariners to return and get his Vanderbilt degree

Like Mark Appel, this immediately changes all the mock drafts.  Also, Vandy will field TJ Pecoraro, Kevin Ziomek, Conrad Grego, and Mike… not a bad start for a championship team.

Draft 2013 Q and A - LHSP Jonah Wesely - Tracy HS (CA.)

Jonah Wesely  Ht: 6-2   Wt: 210   B/T: L/L  HS: Tracy   HS Grad: 2013  City: Tracy  State: CA

PG:  Jonah Wesely is a 2013 LHP with a 6-1 200 lb. frame from Tracy, CA who attends Tracy HS. Strong mature build, limited physical projection. Fast paced delivery, high 3/4's arm slot, has some deception. Steady upper 80's fastball, touched 90 mph, mostly straight. Flashes sharpness to curveball, needs to be more consistent with release point, some feel for change up. Mixes it up and tries to pitch to spots. Improving off speed pitches next step. Good arm. Good student, verbal commitment to UCLA.

.400, 37.0-IP, 0.95-ERA, .051-OBA, 79-K, 13-BB

Mack - Hey, this is Mack Ade, waiting out the rain delay for the Kent State-SC game tonight and we're talking to the pride of Tracy, California, 2013 senior LHSP Jonah Wesely from Tracy, California. Evening, Jonah. I assume the Cal-weather is better than Omaha right now?

Jonah - Yea, it's about a 100 degrees and really dry here in the valley!

Mack – Jonah, I first want to make sure my info is accurate. You young-uns keep growing and throwing. I got you at 6-1, 200 with a 92-96 FB... update that for us and tell us what else you're throwing?

Jonah - 6'2 210 and I'm usually 90-94. But have peaked at 96.

Mack - Jonah, the pundits have you already projected out physically; however, I'm sure that's not true with your 2nd and

3rd pitch... what's your "go to" pitch right now and how's the curveball coming around?

Jonah - My go to pitch is my curveball and my 3rd pitch is my change up. My curveball is more of a strikeout pitch then my change up but I think there both good projectable pitches

Mack - All right, so let's take a look at your last stat line:  37.0-IP, 0.95-ERA, .051-OBA, 79-K, 13-BB... .400 BA…  YOU COULDN'T DO BETTER THAN HIT .400???  :)

Jonah – Well,  I always pride myself on being a 2-way guy and being able to hit to contribute to the team. Stats always don’t necessarily matter, I just wanna win.
Observation - All of us want to win, but Jonah seems capable of accomplishing it. I got im somewhere from the 3rd-10th LHP in the 2013 draft, behind the 1-2 punch of fellow high schoolers Stephen Gonsalves and Zack Farmer.
