3-25-14 – TTF 10 college players on the rise — week 6  - Kyle Freeland, LHP, Evansville (29) - After striking out 48 to four walks over 40 innings in the Cape Cod League, the 6’-4” southpaw has carried over his dominance into this season. With six strikeouts to no walks over eight innings against Indiana State on March 21, Freeland now has 34 K/2 BB over 32 innings with a 2.25 ERA and 1.06 WHIP. With a plus slider and low/mid-90s fastball, he has a lot of upside due to his size, present stuff from the left side and easy delivery. 2-27-14 – TTF - 10 college players on the rise - Tyler Beede, RHP, Vanderbilt (2) - Beede’s stock continued to rise as he put together another stellar performance. Like his first start, he got tagged early, then settled down and was untouchable the rest of the way. After giving up a first inning solo shot on Friday against UIC, he retired 15 straight batters, finishing with 11 K/1 BB over six innings with just one hit allowed. He is now 2-0 with 18 K/2 BB over 11 innings, allowing just two hits. P - Gage Burland, RHP/OF, Sr., East Valley (Wash.) - His hard spinning curveball is the highlight of his arsenal but his upper 80s/low 90s fastball and quality changeup are both good pitches in their own right. Touki Toussaint, Coral Springs Christian (Coral Springs, Fla.)  Toussaint might have been the hottest prospect right after last year's draft, as one mock draft in June listed him as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 draft. Mock drafts produced in the last few months have Toussaint slipping some, but that may be due more to the emergence of Kolek and Gatewood than any deficiency on Toussaint's part. Toussaint's best assets are his athletic ability, a 98 mph fastball and a hard-breaking curveball. 3-25-14 – TTF 10 college players on the rise — week 6  - Ben Wetzler, LHP, Oregon State (NR) - If ever there was someone pitching with a chip on his shoulder, Wetzler is that guy. After another dominant performance against Arizona State on March 21, in which he allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts to one walk, the 6’-1” southpaw now has a 0.59 ERA, 0.49 WHIP over 30.2 innings with 28 K/6 BB and just nine hits. His fastball sits in the 89-91 mph range and he adds a slider and change-up — both quality offerings. 3-9-14 – MLB Draft Insider - JD Davis – 1B Cal State Fullerton – Davis was held hitless in two at bats on Saturday. He did managed two walks on the day. Davis has shown a very good eye and excellent patience, averaging nearly a walk a game for Cal State Fullerton. 3-5-14 – TTF - 10 college players on the rise — week 3 Kyle Freeland, LHP, Evansville (29) - After getting roughed up a bit (4 IP, 4 ER, 7 H) in his last start, Freeland was masterful against Western Illinois on Friday. Over nine shutout innings, he allowed just two hits while striking out nine to no walks. He threw 98 pitches, 71 of them for strikes. He was one of the better pitchers at the Cape over the summer, striking out 48 to four walks over 40 innings while displaying a plus slider and low/mid-90s fastball. UT - Brendan Illies, Jr., RHP/C, Puyallup (Wash.) - Illies' two-way ability allows him to maintain his spot in the Dream Team's Util position for a second consecutive season as an underclassman. Fellow junior SS/RHP Parker Kelly of Oregon has been progressing and is already breathing down Illies' neck for this spot after also just missing the cut in the middle infield and being considered for the pitching staff. 2-23-14 – Daniel Mengden - With a unique over-the-head arm movement prior to his delivery, it gives him some deception. He has a simple, repeatbale delivery and works fast. His fastball gets on hitters fast and has good arm side run and sink. He has a hard 12-6 breaking ball that is a plus offering. It could be an out pitch in pro ball. 2-11-14 – PG/Florida HS Dream Team – Best Hitter For Power: J.J. Schwarz, Sr. Palm Beach Gardens - Schwarz has shown the ability to impact a game on both sides of the ball, with his bat possibly being the loudest tool throughout the course of the game. He shows very good strength in his righthanded swing with major power and loud contact off the barrel. He is able to generate pull-side power and has also shown the ability to sting the ball to the opposite way. 1-3-14 – TTF Baseball - 55. Baltimore Orioles — Mike Papi, OF, Virginia - The 6’-3”, 200 pound left-hander wasn’t even a starter until the 11th game of the season. From that point on, he was one of the best hitters in college and led the nation in OBP. Over 55 games, he hit .381/.517/.619 with 15 doubles, seven home runs and drew an impressive 45 walks to just 25 strikeouts. 2-10-14 - Stanford righthander A.J. Vanegas, may be the most-talented player in this year’s senior class—and actually enrolled in college with more acclaim than Appel did a year earlier after turning down a seventh-round offer from the San Diego Padres that approached $2 million. But Vanegas’ career at Stanford has been wracked by inconsistency and injury. He worked in only nine innings as a junior while battling back from off-season back surgery and also contracting mononucleosis. Davis has generated some debate, but mainly on the strength of his success and potential both in the field and on the mound. But plenty of coaches out there would take Turner over anyone else in college baseball. Turner, a lanky 6-foot-1, 171-pounder, has exceptional speed, an advanced offensive approach and is a more than adequate defender.
