Minor Thoughts:
1. Savannah 3B Jefry Marte made his 32nd error Wednesday night. He also has struck out 83 times in 329 at bats. And he turned 18 less than a month ago. This might be a good time to think about shutting the kid down, send him home to Mama for some home cooking, and get him ready for winter ball.
2. St. Lucie’s RP Emary Frederick pitched 3.0 innings Wednesday night, giving up only one run, and keeping the team alive so they could come back and win the game. Frederick has been below the radar ever since he left college, and hopefully, will take the one extra step needed to make it someday to the majors. The Deltona, Florida native is one of the nicest players I have met and is brother to one of the sweetest kids you would ever meet. No family deserves success more than this one. Bear down Emary… you can do it.
3. Converted B-Mets relief pitcher, Mike Antonini, pitched two scoreless innings Wednesday night in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Pitchers like Antonini, Dylan Owen, and Jake Ruckle, should take a lesson from an old friend of theirs that barely was though of as prospect material as a starter. Bobby Parnell has accepted, and created, a new successful job in the major leagues and I’m sure it’s something he never wanted to become. But the fact is, Parnell, like the others, were never going to make to Queens as a starter. They simply didn’t have as much talent or repertoire as pitchers like Mike Pelfrey, Jon Niese, Bard Holt, and Jenry Mejia. There’s only room for so many young starters on one team, especially if it is a big market to boot.
4. 3B Edwin Castillo, who started out his Mets career last year with the DSL Mets, has been transferred to the VSL Mets. He went 1-4 in his first game there and is currently batting .250. He was batting .167 earlier this year in the Dominican Republic.
5. 2B Andy Green rehabbed this afternoon with the GCL Mets… the GCL Mets continued their winning ways Thursday, beating the GCL Marlins, 6-2. Lachlan Hodge had his second start if the season, going 3.2-IP , striking out four, walking four, and giving up only one run. Hodge is one of the few Aussies left in the recent back of international signings that never seem to make it in this organization. I’m more excited about Venezuelan prospect, Gabriel Zavala, who piggybacked with Hodge and stated: 3-1-IP, 1-ER, 2.16. He also got the win.
6. http://www.baseballamerica.com/ came out with their mid-season Top 50 minor league prospects… Fernando Martinez (who went on the DL agains today) was not on it, so I assume they have graduated him… nor was P Jonathan Niese… but now on it at # 35 is P Brad Holt and # 42 in P Jenrry Mejia.
7. The Mets signed their third pick in the 2009 Draft, SS Robert Shields.
8. Adam Rubin is reporting that SP Dillon Gee did not have his surgery and has began tossing soft balls… good news for the Bisons staff.
9. VSL Met “preemie”, SP Ernesto Yanez, pitched another gem (7.0-IP, 2-ER, no decision) this afternoon in the VSL Mets 4-2 victory over the Pirates. I can’t imagine him not coming stateside for a late season look-see. He’s now 6-1, 1.98in ten games, seven starts. Yanez is a control pitcher and doesn’t have the high heat (31-K’s in 54.2-IP), but he’s only given up 16-BB and has a 1.03 GO/AO.
10. No roster moves today, other than IF Argenis Reyes being called up to replace OF Fernando Martinez, who went to the DL for the 4,596th time in his Met career.
