Minor Thoughts:
1. Binghamton SP Jenrry Mejia, who is currently on the DL, will not pitch in the Futures Game. The Mets have informed the organization that Mej is “nay-boo”, thus, he will be rested for real baseball games. Good move, Mets. Regardless whether the Mets are buyers or sellers, this is one of the top three pitching prospects in the organization and every step should be taken to protect his arm, even if one of them is putting him on the DL.
2. Buffalo returned Lance Broadway to the starter role Wednesday night. The last five games had, in no particular order, Jon Niese. Tobi Stoner, Nelson Figueroa, Brandon Knight, and Ken Takahashi. I assume one of them will be removed; however, there’s always a chance that they have moved to a six-man rotation. The, what does Broadway do to really screw up the math? He goes out and pitches a 9-inning complete gem: 9.0-IP, 118-pitches, 1-ER, 4-Ks.
3. Bisons OF Cory Sullivan went over .300 early on in Wednesday’s game. Sullivan was a 7th round pick in the 2001 draft by Colorado, and played in their organization for seven years. That included 927 at bats as a major leaguer, batting .279/.330/.391/.721. Only eight major league homers here, so calling him to Queens wouldn’t turn around the lack of need for a big bat.
4. Binghamton’s 1Bman, Ike Davis, continues to show additional pop, hitting his 3rd AA home run of the season early on in the first game Wednesday night. Maybe he read where I suggested he should be called to Queens? Seriously, Davis’s batting average is now .275, while his slugging percentage is pushing .500 for the first time in his professional career. The real good news is the progress on that slugging percentage: 2008 in Brooklyn: .326… 2009 in St. Lucie: .486…
5. B-Mets SP Brad Holt was cruising along in the first game… He had given up only one run in the first five innings, while striking out eight, when Portland scored three in the third inning, to go on and win 3-1. Holt’s AA ERA is now 8.40 over four starts, but the good news is he has 19-Ks in his last 15 innings pitched.
6. Scott Moviel started his second game at St. Lucie, and he simply didn’t have it Wednesday night. Tonight: 5.0-IP, 8-H, 5-ER, 1-K, 1-BB, ERA now 7.20 at A+… Moviel looked completely healed from last season’s injuries when he rehabs at the GCL opener, but I’m going to take him off the “under the radar” sheet and, hopefully, they’ll pitch him every five games to get his nastiness back.
7. Mack Preemies 1B Nestor Moreno (3-4, 1-double, 1-RBI, .346) and CF Breiner Soto (2-4, 1-double, walk, .327) continue to lead the VSL Mets, who beat the Rays, 8-7. Soto, who stands 6-2 and weights a dripping wet 147 pounds, has only two runs batted in this season, but already has ten doubles and eight stolen bases in 30 games. 2008’s super duper international signee, SP Carlos Avellones, went 6.0-IP, 1-ER, 1.13 ERA on the season,
8. I got a late roster move in from St. Lucie, around seven minutes before game time. They activated C Julio Rivera from the DL, which filled the slot created when Jordan Abruzzo was sent to Savannah.
9. Mitch Houck, who went down last season and had TJS surgery, was released. His career record as a Met, with the GCL Mets and Savannah, is: 2-2, 1.49, 8 relief appearances, 1.32. Don’t get hurt.
10. OF Angel Pagan finished the night with a .429 rehab batting average at St. Lucie. Look for him to be called to Queens and replace, most probably, Fernando Martinez, who should return to Buffalo.
Mack Out.
