Brooklyn scored three runs against Lowell in the top of the ninth in a 12-9 comeback victory on Tuesday night. Brooklyn's 15th win pulls the Cyclones into a virtual tie with the Staten Island Yankees for first place in the McNamara Division.
Brooklyn's high-octane offense entered Tuesday's game leading the New York Penn League in doubles (55), triples (14), home runs (19), and batting average (.284). The Cyclones offense exploded again at Lowell for 12 runs on nine hits with three home runs, scoring at least one run in five straight innings.
Brooklyn also took advantage of four Lowell errors as well as a wild pitch in the top of the ninth inning that plated SS Rylan Sandoval with the go-ahead run. The Cyclones took the lead in the third inning, courtesy of a two-run shot off the bat of Sandoval -- his fourth of the year. After later falling behind, RF Cory Vaughn hit his league-leading seventh home run into the forest at Edward A. LaLacheur Park to tie the score at 9-9 in the seventh inning. CF Darrell Ceciliani went 3-for-5 with three runs scored to increase his league-leading run total to 25 and bump his season average up to .388. 3B Brian Harrison cracked a solo home run shot to left field in the sixth inning for the first professional home run of his career. Red Sox rehabber Jed Lowrie was held hitless for Lowell.
Righthander Mitch Houck yielded seven runs on six hits over 3.2 innings to put Brooklyn in an early hole. Houck has developed into Brooklyn's ace, entering Tuesday's game as the staff leader in ERA (0.99), strikeouts (26), and WHIP (1.06). His ERA rose to 2.90 after Tuesday's performance. RHP Daniel Carela got just one out in the fourth inning, and surrendered a grand slam to Boston's 2010 first round pick, DH Kolbrin Vitek. LHP Wes Wrenn threw 4.0 innings in long relief for Brooklyn and earned his second win of the season. The Cyclones' closer, Johan Figuereo, earned his fifth save with a perfect ninth inning.
