ANGRY MIKE: ALL EYES ON THESE METS DURING THE 2026 SEASON

 ANGRY MIKE

The 2026 season has the potential to be a very important year regarding the development of key players at various levels within the organization. Obviously one season should never be used to solely judge a player’s development or potential, but a successful season by certain players could potentially elevate their profile exponentially, in regards to organizational depth chart rankings and future potential value.

NOLAN MCLEAN

All eyes will be on McLean, as he offers the Mets their best chance of finally
developing a much-needed homegrown “ACE”. McLean has one of the best
pitching arsenals in the MLB, and he has the rare ability to continue raising
his ceiling in each given year. When you take into account he only pitched
57 IP during his collegiate career and the fact that 2025 was his first
full-season as a full-time SP, it’s easy to see why he’s only scratched the
surface of what could be an extremely high ceiling.

FRANCISCO ALVAREZ

Alvarez has some of the best offensive tools in the organization, his power is rare for a catcher, and he also has the ability to hit for a higher average than he’s shown. He started to finally unlock his best version after a demotion to AAA, if he can exhibit that type of ability over a full-season, he’ll not only be a perennial All-Star, he’ll also position himself as a perennial Silver Slugger candidate.

MARK VIENTOS

Vientos was arguably our best power hitter during the 2024 regular season, and was by far the most dangerous hitter during the Mets magical 2024 playoff run. After battling inconsistency during the early months of the 2025 season, he finally kick into high gear after the All-Star break. Vientos has the ability to replace the production lost by the departure of Pete Alonso via free agency, whether he gets the opportunities to do so and if he capitalizes on those opportunities is anyone’s guess.

BRETT BATY

Baty has some of the best offensive tools of any young hitter in the MLB, as I’ve outlined in a previous article, prospects who are graded as having a 60-Hit Tool & 70-Power Tool is an exclusive club. Despite all the shenanigans regarding playing time, Baty took full advantage of his opportunities during the 2025 season. If he continues to improve his numbers against LHP, as well as improve his road splits, the Mets have another potential .265+ BA & 25+ HR bat capable of logging reps at a multitude of positions. Stearns recently commented how he expects Baty to make starts at RF, signaling their commitment to keeping Baty’s bat in the lineup at all costs.

CARSON BENGE

Benge had a breakout 2025 season, quickly establishing himself as one of the bigger steals of the 2024 MLB Draft. Concerns over his ability to hit for power were silenced after he exploded for 8 HR in only 32 games at Binghamton. He’s being fast-tracked to the MLB and is expected to challenge for the starting RF position, and the fact Juan Soto even moved to LF to make room for Benge, tells you all you need to know about the type of impact Benge can have on both sides of the ball.

JONAH TONG

Tong’s 2025 season was nothing short of historic, and despite an entire off-season of the media and Mets fans clamoring for him to be traded for a proven “Ace”, he’s still here. The Mets were never going to trade Tong, you simply don’t trade young players who’ve elevate their ceiling as quickly as Tong has the past two years. Tong’s pitching arsenal is far from complete, the uptick in velocity opens the door for a multitude of new opportunities in regards to what other pitches he decides to develop to compliment his 70-Grade fastball & 60+ Grade changeup. How quickly he finishes developing his arsenal will ultimately dictate how fast he joins McLean at the top-of-the rotation.

JONATHAN SANTUCCI

Santucci was David Stearns’ & Kris Gross’ second official draft selection, and he received one of the highest signing bonuses for a pitcher drafted outside of the first round, as well as one of the ten highest signing bonuses awarded to a pitcher. His breakout 2025 season quickly proved the signing bonus he received was a bargain, and teams overly concerned about his command issues and medical history during his collegiate career, made a huge mistake passing on a player who was widely considered a Top-15 talent.
Santucci has the explosive upside and the chance to continue rising his prospect profile during his sophomore season, while positioning himself for a rotation spot for 2027.

A.J. EWING

Ewing’s breakout 2025 season, raised his prospect profile arguably as high as McLean, if not higher. When you take into account, he went from being a senior in high school in 2023, to batting over .300 as the #2 hitter for a AA team’s championship run, it’s easy to see why he exploded onto recently released prospect rankings. Anyone who has seen Ewing play aren’t worried about his power numbers, as power is often the last component developed by a young hitter. If Ewing continues his torrid stretch at the plate, he could force himself into the Mets lineup later this season or Opening Day 2027, at the very latest. His tools are electric and perfectly complement the Mets current lineup.

JACOB REIMER

Reimer had an excellent professional debut during the 2023 season, which was overshadowed by Jett Williams stellar professional debut. Despite missing most of the 2024 season, Reimer established himself as one of the more exciting young hitters in the minors, by helping Binghamton win a Championship, even after the Mets promoted their three best hitters in the lineup. Reimer established himself as a legit 20+ HR hitter, who can also post .275+ BA and .365+ OBP, which is good enough to help lineups win games, regardless of where he plays defensively.

ZACH THORNTON

Thornton was lost in the shuffle during the 2025 season, because of the sheer number of Mets pitching prospects who produced breakout seasons. Make no mistake the dominance he exhibited at AA, did not go unnoticed by true prospect-hounds, and Mets brass, as he continues to firmly cement himself as interesting candidate for either the rotation or bullpen as early as this season according to David Stearns recent press conference. Thornton’s velocity continues to tick up, and another significant velo bump and duplicating his 2025 production, will clearly place him in consideration for an integral role for the Mets in the near future.

JACK WENNINGER

Like Thornton, Wenninger’s breakout 2025 season at Binghamton was also overshadowed by other pitching prospects who produced dominant numbers.
It didn’t help that the younger prospects who replaced McLean and Tong, Santucci and Will Watson, also performed remarkably. Nevertheless, Wenninger remains a high-upside prospect, who can cement a role in Queens, if he can continue to improve his secondary pitches and duplicate his 2025 success, while pitching for AAA Syracuse in 2026.

WILL WATSON

Watson is a similar case to Thornton, in that, here we have a pitching prospects who produced with limited experience pitching at the Division I level, drafted in the middle rounds, and then quickly exhibited huge improvements across his entire pitching arsenal. Despite getting his first real taste as a SP, Watson improved the velocities of all his pitches, and continued to improve his production as a SP, even after surpassing his career high in IP for a season & tallying higher pitch counts and IP each outing than ever before. His stuff is electric and he even sneaked onto a Top 100 Ranking, ahead of other Mets prospects, which speaks volumes as to his future ceiling.

TREY SNYDER

Snyder received the third highest signing bonus for the 2024 Draft class, despite being a 5th round pick out of high school. He more than held his own during an aggressive assignment to St. Lucie, and offers a similar athletic profile and skillset to A.J. Ewing. He’s my sleeper pick for a prospect who could produce a similar breakout season like Ewing, only because many people might overlook what he accomplished in his professional debut. He’s an electric talent, who could rise quickly, if he continues to improve.

ELIAN PENA

Pena is going to be one of the most closely watched prospect in the minor leagues by Mets fans, prospect analysts, and Mets brass. Make no mistake about it, the Mets didn’t just unload Jett Williams and Luisangel Acuna to improve their MLB roster, they were also making room for what they expect will be a meteoric rise through the minors by Pena. Stearns didn’t hesitate allowing Jackson Chourio to establish himself at the MLB level as a 19-year old during his tenure with the Brewers. Whether he fast-tracks Pena in similar fashion remains to be seen, but many scouts believe Pena has the rare ability to debut as a teenager, and the Mets unloading both players ahead of him on the organizational depth chart for the future starting 2B role, certainly speaks volumes in my humble opinion. Pena has the ability to join Juan Soto as the only player on the Mets to develop scouting grades that exhibit 70+ Power Tool and 70+ Hit Tool. Analysts whose opinions I trust, firmly believe Pena will start in the FCL, but I have to respectfully disagree with their prediction, and will venture to guess, Pena starting with St. Lucie, like recent high school draft picks, and hopefully finishing in Binghamton like Jett Williams did during his professional debut.

These youngsters in particular will be tracked closely by Mets brass, the scale of progressions in their development could have huge implications as to their futures within the organization. 2026 shouldn’t be characterized as a “make or break” season, for some, a successful 2026 campaign shows they were able to build off of their breakout 2025 campaigns. For others a successful 2026 campaign shows they were able to make the necessary adjustments to overcome the adversity that caused an inconsistent 2025 campaign, which is arguably the most important quality in a professional athlete playing under the bright lights of New York City.

ANGRY MIKE: Mets Farm System developing Frankensteins, not just ballplayers…

 ANGRY MIKE

As far as the laws of Mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality…”

~ ALBERT EINSTEIN

One of the tougher aspects of M.LB. scouting and development, great athletes possessing a wide array of elite physical tools, doesn’t readily translate to success on the field. Unlike other professional sports, you have an exhausting vetting process, consisting of a half-dozen levels of organized competition, that are used to qualify players for a chance to compete at the Major League level. Advancements in technology have helped franchises equip scouting departments with the tools to better identify current and future potential, as well create developmental infrastructure that helps players reach their potential, but it will forever remain an imperfect science.

Successful development of a prospect is predicated on that player’s ability to consistently exhibit the skills that define their future potential. The most common result is for a prospect to reach the potential that was identified earlier in their development. In very rare cases, a prospect continues to redefine their future ceiling, by not only exhibiting the skills that were previously identified, but by developing skills few believed would be possible. I call these rare cases, “Frankensteins”.

Simply put, you’ll never be able to predict who will be the next Juan Soto, teams place bets on who they believe has a chance to come close…

The Mets farm system remains one of the best in baseball, because they have the highest concentration of “Frankensteins” currently, and because of the tens millions of dollars invested by Steve Cohen, they have the infrastructure in place to continue creating more such cases in the future.

Let’s take a look at the current group of “Frankensteins”, players who have drastically elevated their future overall potential within the Mets system, as well as a few players exhibiting the potential to become the next wave of future “Frankensteins”.

FIRST GENERATION “FRANKENSTEINS”:

FRANCISCO ALVAREZ  ->  C

Alvarez wasn’t even ranked in the Top 10 of his I.F.A. Class, but was signed for one of the highest bonuses awarded that year. After a few short seasons, Alvarez proved that signing bonus was a huge bargain.

Accelerated through MiLB -> debuted in MLB at age 20
- Ranked by many as #1 Overall prospect in MiLB prior to MLB debut
- Remains only catching prospect EVER to receive 70 scouting grade for “Power” in the last 15+ years.
- 2026 will be year Alvarez establishes himself as difference-maker -> BOOK IT 🦾

NOLAN MCLEAN -> SP

McLean wasn’t even ranked first drafted by the Orioles as an outfielder in the 2022 Draft, only to return to school, and then be drafted as a two-way player by the Mets in the third round of the 2023 Draft. McLean only pitched 57 career IP during three seasons at Oklahoma State. He became a full-time pitcher midway into his first professional season with the Mets.

- Highest ranked SP Prospect in the MiLB -> wasn’t even a SP in college
- Dominated the Minors in his first full season as a SP
- One of the best 6-pitch arsenals in the MLB that -> every pitch is future 60+ or 70+ scouting grade offering
- Historic start to his MLB career -> exhibited “Ace” potential.
- Frontrunner for 2026 N.L. R.O.Y. & potential CY Young votes

JONAH TONG -> SP

Tong was the 109th pitcher drafted during the 2022 Draft, and selected 226th overall. He was considered a very raw prospect, with limited upside, because of unorthodox mechanics and fastball velocity that only averaged 91 MPH & topped out at 94.

- Fastball is 70 scouting grade + 95 MPH AVG. VELO & 99 MPH Max Velo (during AAA & MLB outings) + 20+ inches of I.V.B.
- Developed a Vulcan Changeup -> already exhibits elite traits & 60+ Scouting grade
- Curveball is also 55 Scouting Grade -> 60+ inches of vertical break
- 2025 had most dominant MILB season history -> 1st SP to lead in ERA & Strikeouts

A.J. EWING -> CF

Ewing was drafted as a 4th round compensatory selection for the loss of Jacob DeGrom during the 2023 Draft. After only 2 full-seasons of minor league ball, Ewing has transformed himself into a legit 5-tool player, after his breakout 2025 season.

- Ranked as high as #31 overall | 2026 Top 100 Prospects List
- Last Mets Prospect was David Wright to post a season with the following numbers:
-> 0.315+ BA | 35+ XBH | 20+ SB | 55+ BB | 0.400+ OBP
- Arguably fastest player in Mets organization right now
- Hit machine, with more power on the way

ZACH THORNTON -> SP

Thornton was a 5th round pick from the 2023 Draft, who elevated his prospect profile significantly, after his breakout 2025 season. Despite limited experience at the D-1 level, he has advanced through the minors rapidly as a SP, and should spent the bulk of the 2026 season at AAA.
- Continues to improve his arsenal -> exhibiting upticks in fastball velocity in 2025 & potentially again in 2026.
- 4% walk rate by SP -> lowest since Christian Scott
- Career numbers on par or better than SP drafted among top 3 rounds of 2023 Draft
- Projection + plus athleticism -> offers exciting future potential

SECOND GENERATION “FRANKENSTEINS”:

ELIAN PENA -> SS

Pena received a franchise record signing bonus awarded to an I.F.A. prospect in 2025. Had a stellar professional debut season, flashing legit 5-tool upside. Has the rare ability to continue elevating his future ceiling to become a member of the exclusive 70/70 Club, which is a limited group of MLB players who ascertain 70 scouting grades for both their “Hit Tool” & “Power Tool”.

- Juan Soto only Mets player -> member of “70/70 Grades Club”:
-> 75 -> “Hit Tool” || 70 -> “Power Tool”
- Prior to Pena only ONE teenage prospect earned 65 scouting grade for “Hit Tool”
- Peña’s power has already being ranked 2nd only behind Ryan Clifford
- Scouts rave work ethic & maturity -> providing hope for accelerated development
- Future #1 Overall Prospect in MILB, like Francisco Alvarez was.

WANDY ASIGEN -> SS

As talented as Pena is, Asigen has been touted by some as being even more talented. One of the rare instances of a teenage prospect receiving a 65 scouting grade “Hit Tool”, as well as 60 scouting grades for “Power” & “Speed”.

- Considered by many as the best offensive talent in a historically deep 2026 I.F.A. Class
- Tons of projection + excellent work ethic -> another potential fast-riser through minors
- Similar to Elian Pena -> has the tools to join Soto among the “70/70 Grades Club”
- Mets stole him away from Yankees a couple weeks before “Signing Day” is ALWAYS worth highlighting 😂🤣

TREY SNYDER -> SS / CF

Snyder was a 5th round pick, but received the third highest signing bonus in the draft class. Ryan Clifford was the last draft pick Kris Gross awarded a second round bonus this late in the draft. Snyder offers a ton of upside & more than held his own as despite an aggressive assignment to full-season Low-A ball.

- Reminds me of a RHB-version of A.J. Ewing -> very comparable tools
- Stole 40+ bases in his pro debut + more power on the way -> legit 5-tool upside
- Gritty, high energy motor -> offers a ton defensive versatility who can play IF & OF
- Expecting Snyder to duplicate Ewing’s breakout is unfair -> anything close & Mets have another potential high-impact bat

PETER KUSSOW -> SP

it’s been noted by a couple pre-draft reports, Kussow has “Day 1 potential”, but dropped because he’s from a cold-weather state. The last time the Mets drafted a “cold-weather” high school pitching prospect, it was Jonah Tong. Kussow is considerably more advanced than Tong was at the same stage of development & he has unlimited projection, physical comps include J.J. Watt, “Ivan Drago”, or The X-Men character “Colossus”.

- PROJECTION, PROJECTION, PROJECTION…
- Already tops out at 97 MPH -> potential to become SP that holds triple digit velocity
- Plus athleticism + smooth, repeatable mechanics
- Already flashes 2 pitches that are future 65+ scouting grade offerings
- Best case scenario -> looks like Jacob Misiorowski but cleaner mechanics

CAMDEN LOHMAN -> SP

Lohman was drafted in the 8th round, but V.P of Scouting, Kris Gross awarded Lohman the highest above slot bonus in the draft class. Similar to Kussow, Lohman offers tremendous upside, but isn’t quite as polished, and needs to add a considerable amount more weight to his 6’4 frame. Similar fastball velocity and potential for multiple plus off-speed pitches gives the development team a lot to work with.

- PROJECTION, PROJECTION, PROJECTION
- Similar delivery & release point to Tong & Trey Yesavage, but higher velocity
at the same stage of development
- Future fastball velocity has potential to be as high or even higher
- I trust Kris Gross, he’s a mad scientist
- Gross only shells out big $$ bonuses to players with special potential.

ANGRY MIKE: METS OFF-SEASON GRADES

 ANGRY MIKE

 PETE ALONSO era is over  <->  A+

Alonso had a great career for the Mets, and I’m glad he was able to end it on a high note statistically, but his days were numbered ever since he rejected the 7-year extension offered to him during the 2023 extension. There was no amount of fanfare or media pressure that would’ve convinced Cohen to change his mind, and I whole-heartedly believe it was the right decision.

Allocating $30+ Million to a first baseman who never exhibited the skillset of being an elite well-rounded hitter like Vlad Guerrero Jr or Freddie Freeman would have crippled the franchise financially. We all know why it was the right decision to let him move on, no sense continuing to harp on his shortcomings.

It was a tough decision but the right decision, which is why I gave it an A+. It takes guts to ignore all the vile rhetoric being spewed on social media, and it proves Cohen wants to win and will do whatever it takes to end the drought and bring a World Series Title back to Queens, including making the decisions many people might hate.

Selling high on BRANDON NIMMO  <->  B -

2012 the Mets shocked the world by trading reigning Cy Young Award Winner to the Bluejays, it was a power move to sell high on Dickey, and they got two great prospects for a knuckle-baller in his mid-30s. If not for Jeurys Familia imploding during the 2015 World Series, those two top prospects would’ve helped the Mets win a World Series.

Point being, sometimes you have to sell high on a player, even when it feels premature. Nimmo was coming off his best offensive season, the opportunity to trade him this off-season was there, and the Mets were smart to capitalize on it. I’d have also given this an A+, but the return we got for Nimmo didn’t really make much sense. I’m choosing to believe Semien was instrumental in helping us recruit Bo Bichette.

DEVIN WILLIAMS  <->  A+

Devin Williams is an absolute BEAST and prior to last season was arguably the best Closer in the MLB, despite giving up the homer to Alonso during the 2024 playoffs. We’ve already shown in a previous article, if it wasn’t for a rough stretch that spanned across 8-9 outings, his numbers in 2025 were on par with Diaz’ phenomenal season.

Williams also signed with a “team-first” attitude, clearly stating in his introductory press conference he was brought in to pitch in front of Edwin Diaz, which would’ve gave the Mets arguably the best 1-2 punch in the MLB.

LUKE WEAVER  <->  B+

Weaver has been one of the most versatile members of the Yankees’ bullpen for the last couple years, and similar to Williams, his 2025 numbers look pedestrian because of a isolated rough stretch of games that might have been caused by returning from the I.L. too quickly. Weaver brings a different element to the Mets bullpen, utilizing a starting pitcher’s repertoire to keep hitters unbalanced. In recent years Mets relievers  were primarily two-pitch pitchers, which might’ve contributed to them getting lit up as the season progressed.

Mets needed to bolster the back of their bullpen, and quickly pivoting to Weaver was the right move after Diaz announced he was signing with the Dodgers.

JEFF MCNEIL TRADED  <->  A+++++++++++++

McNeil should’ve been traded after his 2022 season, when the Mets had the chance. He brings nothing to the table offensively or defensively, and the only thing he’s improved in recent years is his wide array of temper tantrums on the field. The fact Stearns was able to find a taker and actually acquire someone who is capable of playing baseball professionally is a HOME RUN.

BO BICHETTE  <->  A+

Bichette is one of the best all-around hitters in the league, and if it wasn’t for a so-so 2024 season, which was the only year he ever missed time on the I.L., he might’ve received a contract closer to Francisco Lindor’s or Corey Seager’s. He’s an elite offensive talent and his numbers will explode hitting behind Soto, as well as having higher caliber talent providing protection behind him. His defense at third base will be fine, but it will be his offensive skill set that will hopefully position the Mets to compete with the Phillies for the N.L. East Division.

LUIS ROBERT JR   <->  B -

Robert is your classic boom or bust investment, why I think his acquisition deserves a B+, is because the Mets were able to acquire him for considerably less than his original asking price throughout the 2025 season. $20 Million is a ton of money to pay for a player that’s made THIRTY trips to the I.L. and could just be Tyrone Taylor with more HR.

Scott Boras has arguably the best resources at his disposal to help his clients resurrect their careers, and if he’s confident Robert’s health issues are behind him and we can expect similar production from Robert like we saw during the second half of the 2025, it’s a low-risk, high-reward gamble the Mets had to take.

TOBIAS MYERS  <->  A+

Myers is a great addition to the bullpen and provides a much needed multi-inning RP, who can rack up strikeouts and put zeroes on the board. The fact he has 4 years of control remaining and could possibly have been brought in to help Jonah Tong how to throw his plus-plus splitter, makes his acquisition all the more exciting.

FREDDY PERALTA  <->  A+

Stearns saved the best for last, acquiring the established “Ace” the Mets needed for their rotation. Let’s make one thing clear, Peralta IS NOT THE METS BEST STARTING PITCHER, he’s the best combination of experience and high upside. Peralta is the perfect complement to Nolan McLean and he will take a ton of pressure off of McLean and the other members in the rotation.

Peralta didn’t come cheap, but the Mets Farm System has the depth to absorb the loss and Kris Gross is a mad scientist who’ll replace those losses with a higher bonus pool allotment at his disposal in this year’s MLB Draft.

WANDY ASIGEN   <->  A++++

Adding a phenom like Asigen, who was widely seen as the #1 talent in this year’s I.F.A. Class is a franchise-altering move. Out of the 7,000-8000 teenage prospects who joined the professional ranks over the last 10+ years, only a handful of them received a 65 HIT TOOL Scouting Grade. The fact Asigen also received 60 scouting grades for power and speed, makes his potential ceiling even more tantalizing.

In 2 years, this could be the most exciting acquisition from this off-season, that’s even if Bichette and Peralta continue agree to suit up for the Mets over a long-term basis. Pairing him with Elian Pena is going to be exciting watch and is straight NIGHTMARE FUEL for opposing MiLB pitchers.

ANGRY MIKE: LAST CHARGE OF STEVE COHEN & HIS IMMORTALS

ANGRY MIKE

The Mets capped off their busy off-season with arguably their biggest move, acquiring Brewers “Ace”, Freddy Peralta and swingman man Tobias Myers, for top prospects Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat. It was a shocking move that materialized rather quickly after there were reports the Brewers made a formal offer of Freddy Peralta for Williams and Sproat. After the smoke and flames from the "Hot Stove" settled, the Mets were able to get the established “Ace” their rotation sorely needed, as well as a high upside arm for the bullpen.

The cost was expensive, as Williams and Sproat are not only both high impact prospects, they’re both “MLB-ready” and capable of contributing for the Brewers during the 2026 season.

This was one of the rare trades where teams exchanged players from positions of strength, to supplement areas of need. The Mets have the deepest farm system in the MLB, and the “Rich got even Richer”, when they were able to sign the #1 Prospect from the 2026 I.F.A. Class, Wandy Asigen, who has been lauded as a true franchise-altering talent. It was speculated all winter by the media and “industry experts”, if the Mets were serious about acquiring a true “Ace”, they would have to surrender Jonah Tong and other top five prospects. The fact the Mets were able to keep players with the highest upside and still acquire an All-Star like Peralta is a testament to how phenomenal of job they have done in recent years to quickly build their stockpile of high-upside talent within their farm system.

FREDDY PERALTA  SCOUTING REPORT:

Peralta has been one of the most consistent starters in the MLB over the past few years, possessing electric stuff that qualifies him as the #1 SP on almost any franchise. What makes Peralta even more intriguing is the fact as good as he’s been, there is still room for improvement, that could help elevate him into a true candidate to win a Cy Young. The Mets have done a tremendous job helping pitchers of various pedigrees unlock their best versions, and that was even before they hired Justin Willard to be their new pitching coach. The combination of Willard, the Mets Pitching Lab, and Peralta’s electric stuff, make for an interesting pairing  that should help Peralta continue to improve and deliver the type of “Ace Caliber” season the Mets are hoping for.

4-seam Fastball  ->  60+ Scouting Grade 94.8 MPH AVG., tops out 98 MPH, perceived velocity is significantly higher, generates run value Top 15% MLB.

Slider  ->  legit 70  Scouting Grade, generated a 53% Whiff rate in 2025, that features sharp horizontal break.

Changeup  ->  55-60  Scout Grade, he used it significantly more last year & it is a pitch that is continues to get better

Curveball  ->  50-55  Scouting Grade, features 12-6 drop & above average vertical drop.

<->    FREDDY PERALTA   <->  3  Consecutive Seasons of:

<->        30+  ->  Game Starts

<->      165+  ->  Innings Pitched

<->      Fewer hits allowed  ->  than innings pitched

<->      Fewer Hits allowed  ->  than Strikeouts

<->      K-RATE  ->  of 28% or Higher

<->      Averaged 13 Quality Starts per season

<->      Double digit wins

<->      Averaged  18 Outings per season  ->   2 earned runs or fewer

<->      Averaged  20  Outings recording   ->   6+ Strikeouts or more

METS ACQUIRED   <->  TOBIAS MYERS   ->  SP  /  RP

<->    SCOUTING REPORT:

Myers is an interesting swingman, who’ll take over Max Kranick’s multi-inning role for the 2026 season. He has a similar pitching mechanics to Jonah Tong, with a mid-90s fastball that is deceptively fast. Myers best off-speed pitch is his splitter, which he uses to induce chase & thrown for strikes. Myers also uses a curveball and changeup but they are not close to his splitter. Myers has the potential to be a valuable piece out of the bullpen, but he gets hit hard at times and will need to earn Mendoza’s trust if he is to graduate to high-leverage situations. I wouldn’t put him on par with Luke Weaver just yet, but he provides much needed depth for the bullpen and can eat innings in a multi-inning role to help prevent having to use other key high-leverage arms on a daily basis.

Myers also provides another benefit that I believe is being overlooked. Myers has the same delivery as Mets phenom Jonah Tong, who could greatly benefit from learning how to develop a similar plus splitter like the one Myers throws. Did Stearns choose Myers over other potential RP, because he could help teach his prized pitching prospect another potential 60+ grade pitch that he can add to his arsenal, which he’ll elevate him into a frontline starter?

I’d like to think so, because that’s exactly what I would’ve done.

Many felt the Mets had to make a move to get a bonafide “Ace” after the way 2025 season ended, and being able to acquire Peralta without having to surrender either Carson Benge or Jonah Tong, as well as several other prospects makes this a huge win for the efforts. The Rangers surrendered 5 prospects for Mackenzie Gore and the Orioles paid a similar steep price for Shane Baz, who might have additional years of control, but aren’t remotely as close to being as accomplished as Peralta is. Having Peralta at the front of the rotation takes a tremendous amount of pressure off of the rest of the rotation and it provides the Mets with the luxury of letting Tong further develop his secondary pitches in AAA to start the season. After a flurry of moves to close out the off-season, the Mets have positioned themselves as legit playoff contenders and better compete with the Phillies for the N.L. East Division.

Until Peralta signs an extension, critics will continue to harp on how much the Mets overpaid for a rental, but Peralta’s has already voiced a willingness to sign an extension if he feels he lands in great situation, which Cohen and Stearns should have no problem convincing him as such. They had a similar situation when they traded for Lindor, which was resolved quickly after the season, and I believe they will be able to get an extension done with Peralta as well. Regardless of whether Bichette opts out or not, the Mets will have over $90+ million coming off the books, leaving more than enough room to extend Peralta and still pursue Tarik Skubal.

The Mets have positioned themselves well to have a great 2026 season, as well as having the payroll flexibility to continue investing in elite caliber talent by utilizing short-term high AAV contracts or if they feel a player is worthy of locking up using a long-term contract.
