The Brooklyn Cyclones defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers by the score of 7-4 in their first matchup of the season on Wednesday night. The Cyclones offense has now scored at least five runs in 16 out of the 26 games they've played this season. The victory pulls Brooklyn (16-10) into sole possession of first place, one game ahead of the Staten Island Yankees (14-10).
For the second consecutive night, RF Cory Vaughn and SS Rylan Sandoval hit tape-measure home runs for the Cyclones. Both long balls were hit over the left field scoreboard and contributed to a three-run third inning to give Brooklyn an early 3-0 lead. Vaughn and Sandoval have each hit four home runs over their past six games. Vaughn's home run was his eighth of the season, which extends his league-leading total.
RHP Yohan Almonte shined through a rain-shortened start, allowing one earned run and two unearned runs on one hit over four innings. RHP Nicholas Carr relieved Almonte after the rain delay and provided one inning of scoreless relief in the fifth to preserve the 3-3 tie. LHP Hamilton Bennett earned the first win of his professional career with two crucial innings in relief of Carr, allowing an unearned run while striking out four. RHP Ryan Fraser earned his second save with two scoreless innings of relief.
