Gwinnett 8, Buffalo 7

from press release

After erasing a five-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth, the Buffalo Bisons failed to finish off the miraculous comeback as the Gwinnett Braves reclaimed the lead in the tenth and won the game 8-7.

Starting pitcher Ramon Ortiz tossed another quality start tonight at Coca-Cola field going six innings while only allowing four hits and one run. He left the game with the score knotted up at one apiece.

After Ortiz left the game he was relieved by Bobby O'Connor in the seventh. O'Connor got through the inning with relative ease and kept the game tied.

Right fielder Fernando Martinez would then hit his second home run of the game in the bottom half of the seventh inning after hitting one to lead off the fifth. Martinez hit a bomb to left to give the Herd the lead in the seventh after sending another long ball to the parking lot in right to start the fifth inning. F-Mart's ninth four-bagger of the year gave the Herd a 2-1 lead heading into the eighth inning where Adam Pettyjohn was set to relieve O'Connor.

Pettyjohn struggled in his appearance tonight, failing to record an out while giving up two hits and three runs while two of them were earned. Brian Bruney followed Pettyjohn to try to limit the damage but a throwing error from first baseman Mike Jacobs allowed the inning to continue.

Braves right fielder Jordan Schafer hit a soft grounder down the first base line with the bases loaded. Jacobs scooped it routinely and made the throw to home in an attempt to get the force out but when his throw missed catcher J.R House two runs were able to score and the Braves momentum kept rolling. Two more runs would score after Jacobs' throwing error as the Braves put a six-spot on the board in the eighth to give them a 7-2 lead.

The Herd would not go quietly into the night however as House hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth following Martinez and shortstop Luis Hernandez singles to pull the game to within two runs. Valentino Pascucci pinch hit following House and hit a solo home run to trim the lead to a single run. House and Pascucci became the first pair of Bisons teammates to hit back-to-back home runs since Jesus Feliciano and Jacobs did it back on April 25 against Pawtucket.

The Bisons then drew the bases loaded by way of a Jacobs walk. Third baseman Mike Cervenak drew the fourth walk of the inning to send home second baseman Just Turner, erasing the Braves five-run lead and sending the game into extra innings.
