So, does TC sit Flores now? I hate to start sounding like Chris 'Maddog' Russo now, but HOW DO YOO SIT FLORES NOW? You asked the kid to do everthing you wanted him to do and he became the best hitter at AAA, He also did that as the younger player in AAA, SO HOW DO YOU SIT HIM NOW? You call him up to the majors and you tell him he's the starting shortstop only to then let him sit on the bench for the next 18 years. Now he hits you a grand slam and the Philly announcer is comparing him to Jhonny Peralta. Would you sit Johnny Peralta down?
Look, everything's not perfect on this team this year, but for right now, this week, this season, HOW DO YOU SIT DOWN WILMER FLORES, LUCAS DUDA AND BOBBY ABREAU? You then surround then with David Wright Curtis Granderson, and Daniel Murphy and the two best defensive players down the middle of the field, Travis d'Arnaud and Matt den Dekker to the next six games played in Chicago and San Francisco.
And call these guys in a room and let them know that they don't have to go check on a lineup card again until they get back to Queens.
Let's see what our current best team can do WITH OUR BEST SHORTSTOP in the lineup.

The
outfield - I think Lagares is showing that he is going to hit. He is a long
term solution to centerfield. Granderson is going to be here for a few more
years and along with Nimo they should cover the 2nd outfield position for a
while. They might overlap for at most a year. That leaves another outfield spot
which the Mets have no current or foreseeable future solution to. I don’t think
this is something the Mets should try to address through the draft. They can’t
wait. I think they should target prospects like Joc
Pederson and Gregory Polanco. Could
deGrom, Gee, Neise or Wheeler get one of those?
Shortstop
- This is a need but it is not as large as the outfield since it isn’t as big
an offensive position as leftfield. Tejeda is coming around. Flores seemed to
make all the routine plays
Mack –
Richard, a few things.
Don’t mistake the past few
games with Philadelphia for a great pitching duel between two great teams.
You’re watching two teams that simply can’t generate enough offense to win a
simple nine inning baseball game.
Yes, the Mets have enough young
talent to generate trades for an additional outfielder and a new shortstop.
These things take time. You’re watching the current showcasing on Jacob deGrom, which will definitely set him
up for a trade (if Dillon Gee ever gets back on a mound). You’ll also see Daisuke Matsuzaka dealt as a loner, and my
suggestion would be to package both of them to the Dodgers for Peterson.
(Ya know, for all the great
young starters this teams seems to have they sure are throwing up a lot of guys
named Everland, Colon, and Matsuzaka and not pitching at all Harvey, and Gee,)
As for shortstop, my choice
would be to find an outfielder with pop first. Peterson or Polanco would make
so much sense on this team for so many reasons.
Oh… one more thing. You may
need to start worry about the catcher also. The one currently playing doesn’t
seem to working out.
While I’m on the subject of the
outfield…
I discussed this yesterday in the comments section of my
Morning Report. No one is happy with the acquisitions of both Curtis Granderson and Chris Young and followers continue to
question whether or not the Mets should have re-signed Marlon Byrd. My memory fades sometimes but
I simply don’t remember re-signing Byrd to a Young-type deal as being an
option.
It no longer matters what was a good deal and what wasn’t.
What now matters is the team actually still has a chance to make the wild card
schedule this year and the front office/manager has to figure out how to get
them there.
The answer here is a simple one though many of you may not
like it.
This is a team with limited talent, so, the only way you get
to where you want to go is to play the best players you have in the dugout.
Period.
Your best outfielder… right now… is Juan Lageres, but he’s not available. Fine.
Get over it and fill out the lineup card with what the next best is and stop
looking to the Las Vegas stat sheets to find your answer.
Any combination of Granderson, Young, Bobby Abreu (frankly, one of your most valuable players
so far this year), and Eric Campbell is what is
going to get you through the next couple of series. You know that Lagares is
coming back so there’s no reason to recall Andrew
Brown and let him sit on the bench.
Your next big decision after that is what happens to either
Abreu or Campbell when Eric Young Jr. comes back.
But this is your 2014 Mets outfield. Like it or lump
it.
And while I’m on Campbell. He’s been a pleasant surprise
however, the guy have only a little more than 30 at-bats in the league.
You have to plot a strategy like they did in World War Two to
get to Berlin. One town at a time (we didn’t employ this kind of strategy in
Viet Nam because we never had a plan to go to Hanoi). You go to Philadelphia
for a five game series. You hope to win four but you’ll be thrilled to escape
with three victories. You never look around at what the other teams are doing.
Just do your job and you’ll have a good chance of achieving your goals.
My hopes are that Sandy Alderson will address this position before the trading period runs out.
There’s enough good pitching in the system to package two of the guys for
someone like Joc Peterson. I’ve been a General Manager. I too would rather have
someone under team control.
And I’ve been wrong about this before (Lagares) but it seems
to me that the only true outfield prospect the team has in its system right now
is Brandon Nimmo, who will be ready on opening
day 2016.
Until then, the outfield looks day-to-day.
An observer’s view on Noah Syndergaard –
“He needs
to go back to the fastball after it gets hit, instead of going immediately to a
breaking ball that is right in the hitter’s swing path. Don’t abandon the
fastball when they make contact off it. Just go further inside with it next
time.”
Good advice from Andy
Martino. Very few people on earth can
consistently throw a baseball as fast as Syndergard, and there are even less
that can swing and barrel up on a pitch that fast.
What all this means is position is everything.
‘Thor’ just may be thinking about this too much. Just throw
the damn ball and get up here and help us!

Hi Mack
This came as a shock to me, but in all of baseball's 30 teams (half with DH), Mets have scored the 15th most runs, and are only 13 behind 10th ranked Milwaukee, which has played one more game.
So our offense may often offend but a lot of other teams are sputtering too.
I like your take, and for the sake of being redundant to a post in an earlier article this AM, I would add Andrew Brown, even if it means returning a pitcher to AAA and going with one less. The starters are going deeper, the bullpen guys are better (and thus less apt to be pulled as quickly), and the extra inning games adding the need for pitchers an aberration.
I would platoon Brown with Duda at first - Brown is 16 for 32 with 2 doubles and SEVEN homers against lefties in Vegas - 1,219 slugging % - not a typo; Duda is a .330 lifetime slug % vs. lefties. A Brown/Duda pairing? Priceless.
Campbell? He'd lose first base at bats if Brown is called up. This is where it gets daring. Sit Chris Young and play Campbell frequently . Campbell is much better on base and does not strike out as much; he may hit fewer HRs but will get plenty of doubles. Eric Young seems like he won't be back soon, so that won't complicate this mix.
I think those two moves (Brown, Campbell) add 2/10 to 3/10 of a run per game long term. Flores over Tejada (or is it Peralta?) results in say 2/10 of a run extra per game.
All of a sudden, you have more hitting, which helps Grandy (he always hit well on high-powered Yank teams - he likes hitting company) and helps d'Arnaud to not worry about having to do too much hitting-wise.
Strong starters, much-improved pen, do those changes to boost the offense - hey, let's win a pennant already!
Hey Mack Iam start to worrying about dArnaud too. I mean he has about 250 PA and is showing not really what I was expecting. But as you said what I really belief is that if you put dArnaud and Flores into the lineup for the next 6-8 games they will start to show us what they can. For me it looks that the sporatically platoon between recker and darnaud is killing darnauds developement
Good morning everyone,
Mack I thought u said last week Pedersen isn't going anywhere?
I hope they do give Flores 13 of the next 15 games to show what he has at the plate.
D'arnaud needs to bat higher in the lineup and give him something to hit, batting in front of tejada is like batting in front of the pitcher. You don't get any good pitches to hit. I would bat him second and move everyone down a peg.
Thomas -
I feel your love for Brown, but there's no reason to take away the few at bats Campbell is getting. You have to understand that baseball locker rooms can't be a conveyor belt. There are starters and their are bench warmers. And then there are starters in AAA that look like a duck. I love your excitement about the kids you 'find' in the system, but... let's leave this lineup alone until they prove a new step is needed. Let's see what happens with the current road trip.
Remember... Lagares will be back next week and EYJ will start rehap soon.
I'm sorry but the Brown train has to station in the station.
Michi/John -
And you think that's bad for d'Arnaud... hitting ahead of Colon guarantees you at least two IBB a game
Someone has to bat 8th and it shouldn't be Flores. d'Arnaud is going to have to hit himself out of this.
Regarding Peterson, I still believe the Dodgers will never move Peterson and they are actively shopping 2 of their other outfielders, but I still try and come up with logical and entertaining posts about something more than bitching about Stephen Drew :)
I hear you on Brown, Mack, but I am switching from muffins to brownies in the morning, in solidarity with Andrew, until the Mets make the move.
I would never consider a hunger strike for the Mets, though, as you might divine from the above statement. It's food first, Mets second!
Mack,
Good morning, excellent column as usual. Hey, Wilmer looked good last night, even if his double was lucky and the salami was on a 3-1 room service fastball. He needs to play 3 of 4 games at SS so long as he is with the big team. Yeah, Tejada has been better of late, but as said above a youngster with Peralta-like potential needs to get the better look until he is just killing the team there. TDA is starting to worry slightly, but he still needs more consistent playing time. I would give Recker a few more starts, but keep TDA playing 5 of 7. It won't be easy to get hot hitting in the 8-hole, but he put himself there and will need to dig himself out. At least he continues to draw walks, so frustration has not expanded his K zone too much, but there are still way too many weak infield grounders. Also agree that Abreu has been terrific. I knock Alderson quite a bit for his inactivity and poor acquisitions, but he needs credit too. Abreu has been good so far, and Colon is coming around, which is huge for trade purposes be it at the deadline or over the winter. I will not judge C Young until later in the year, and while Grandy is killing them right now, this deal will need 2-3 years to determine if it was good or bad. I like den Dekker as a 4th OF, again we saw just how good and impactful that glove is, and it is great to have two CF (a righty and lefty) that both bring gold glove caliber D. Great to see. Now, if Flores can bring the offense and serviceable D at SS, Tejada can backup 2B and SS (Murphy needs to get some rest or will be hitless in August), I will again give Alderson credit. Dealing for a big OF bat, and acquiring a vet back end bullpen arm (these kids will wear out at this pace) shouldn't cost too much in terms of prospects - I just wouldn't be too quick to give away any of this young pitching unless it is for a premium prospect like Pederson that has a good shot at being an impact player, especially offensively.
Yeah, just let this lineup play intact the next two series and see if we can come home at .500. The league is pretty mid-range right now and you actually may be able to survive in this game with mostly home grown talent.
