AA Affiliate of the Detroit Tigers
RHP Scott Shaw (4-0, 7.13) vs. RHP L.J. Gagnier (3-0, 2.10)
Game #27• Thursday, May 6, 2010
Jerry Uht Park • Erie, PA • 11:05 a.m.
LAST GAME: Erie brought Binghamton’s six-game winning
streak to a screeching halt with a 4-2 victory in a rain-filled
game Wednesday night at Jerry Uht Park. The SeaWolves got
to Brad Holt early. Cesar Nicolas launched a two-out, two-run
homer in the first to get Erie started in the first inning. In the
second, Cale Iorg singled home Michael Bertram, who had
tripled to lead off the frame. The B-Mets cracked the score
column in the third when Jonathan Malo smacked a solo
homer to left opening the inning off SeaWolves starter Jon
Kibler. In the fourth, Zach Lutz duplicated the feat with another
solo shot, but that would be the end of Binghamton’s
scoring. Rain stopped play for almost an hour in the bottom of
the fourth. When play resumed, the Erie bullpen took charge,
throwing the final five innings in scoreless fashion. Zach
Simons notched the win with three, no-hit innings and Brendan
Wise saved it with two scoreless innings of his own.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Scott Shaw will pursue
his fifth straight victory this morning. In his last start, Shaw
beat Akron May 1 with five-plus innings in which he allowed
five runs, four earned, on seven hits. He is 4-0 with a 7.13
ERA in 24 innings. He led St. Lucie (High-A) last season in
numerous categories, including starts (26), innings (149.2),
wins (8) and strikeouts (118). The righty was drafted by the
Mets in the 13th round of the June 2008 draft out of the
University of Illinois.
RHP L.J. Gagnier takes the ball for the SeaWolves in search of
the series split. Gagnier has won three consecutive starts
including his last versus Trenton May 1. He fired 6.2 innings
and surrendered three runs on seven hits, two of which were
homers. For the year, he is 3-0 with a 2.10 ERA in 30 innings.
Last season, Gagnier was the Tigers Pitcher of the Year with
Lakeland (High-A) where he went 9-10 with a 3.83 ERA in 23
appearances, 22 starts, over 134 innings. He was taken in
the 10th round in 2006 by Detroit out of Cal State Fullerton.
HERNANDEZ HITS ON HOLD: Binghamton shortstop Luis Hernandez
entered the series with Erie with the fourth-highest
batting average in the Eastern League (.351), but has been
cooled down the SeaWolves pitchers. Hernandez is 0-13 in
the series, dropping his average to .286.
LUTZ LIFTS OFF: Third baseman Zach Lutz continues to terrorize
Eastern League pitchers with the longball. He touched up
Jon Kibler for a solo homer in the fourth inning Wednesday
night to raise his total to seven. He is tied for the Eastern
League lead with New Hampshire’s Eric Thames. Unfortunately
for Lutz and the B-Mets, all but two of his homers have
been with the bases empty.
