Winning their past two games in walk-off fashion Bisons starting pitcher Dillon Gee made sure it did not need to come down to that in today's game. Facing the Gwinnett Braves in the finale of a four-game series Gee threw a gem and locked down the Braves in a 2-1 win at Coca-Cola Field this afternoon.
Gee tossed eight innings today, which was a season-high for the right hander this year. Throughout his eight innings Gee only gave up three hits and one run. That lone run for the Braves came in the fourth inning when third baseman Diory Hernandez hit a sharp line drive to right field that just went over the outstretched glove of second baseman Andy Green. Hernandez's single gave the Braves the first run of the game as left fielder Matt Young scored.
During his eight innings of work Gee also struck out eight batters, bringing his season total to 110 strikeouts. Gee is now only 27 strikeouts behind Vicente Palacios for the record for most strikeouts in the modern era and currently ranks sixth on the all-time single season list. The Herd would answer back from Hernandez's RBI single in the bottom half of the fourth when Green hit a double to center field allowing right fielder Valentino Pascucci to score, tying the game up at one. The Bisons would then take the lead by a go-ahead double from left fielder Jorge Padilla. After a sacrifice fly got the winning run home from the bat of Padilla last night his double was again the difference in today's contest as the Herd ultimately won 2-1.
After the Herd taking the lead Gee took control. From the fifth inning on Gee was in command as only one batter reached base when he gave up a four pitch walk to Young in the sixth.
Another notable stat for Gee's outing today was the number of pitches he threw. The starter managed to work through nearly the entire game while only throwing 97 pitches, 65 of them being for strikes.
Ensuing Gee's departure, reliever Mike O'Connor entered the game in a save situation. O'Connor breezed through the Braves top of the order needing only nine pitches to retire the side and pick up his second save of the year. The Bisons see their record improve to 49-45 and win their first series back from their All-Star break. The Braves are now 43-52 on the season.
