Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Michael Fisher cracked solo homers, but Eric Thames third-inning grand slam doomed the B-Mets to a 6-2 loss at Merchantsauto.com Stadium Sunday afternoon. Binghamton split the four-game series despite the defeat. Mark Cohoon was hung with his second loss after allowing a season-high six runs over six innings.
New Hampshire (57-38) took the early advantage in the first on a two-out solo blast from Travis Snider, who stroked a two-strike curveball over the wall in right to give the Fisher Cats a 1-0 lead.
Nieuwenhuis provided the equalizer for Binghamton. The centerfielder took starter Zach Stewart deep with the bases empty and one out in the third for his team-leading 15th jack of the season, evening the score at one.
The Fisher Cats mounted a rally in the proceeding half inning. After Cohoon got Jonathan Jaspe to ground out, he walked Luis Sanchez on four pitches leading to the top of the order. Darin Mastroianni joined Sanchez on base with a clean single to left. Adeiny Hechevarria moved everyone up a station with a bloop single to center, filling the bases. Snider became the fourth straight to reach when he dropped a similar blooper into center, pushing New Hampshire ahead 2-1. Cohoon struck out Shawn Bowman to notch the second out, but grooved a 2-2 fastball to Thames, which ended over the wall in right for a grand slam, increasing the deficit to 6-1. It was Thames second grand slam of the season and 18th home run.
Binghamton (50-45) reached with its first three hitters in the fourth on a pair of walks and a single to load the bases. However, Stewart buckled down and retired the next three hitters to strand the bases full without incurring any damage. That proved to be the B-Mets best scoring chance the rest of the way.
Fisher closed the gap to four with a solo homer to right-center in the sixth, his third, but that was all the run production for Binghamton.
Stewart departed after the sixth with the win in tow. The right-hander allowed just two runs on seven hits despite walking four.
Trystan Magnuson hurled the final three innings in scoreless fashion to secure his fifth save.
Marshall Hubbard extended his hitting streak to a season-long 11 games with a 2-4 showing and Sean Ratliff ripped a pair of doubles to contribute to the B-Mets nine-hit output.
