Cutnpaste: - Jimmy Johnson, Kai Gronauer, Carlos Gomez, Trade Rumors... and Mike Pelfrey

Jimmy Johnson:

The Mets cut Jimmy this week:

Johnson was drafted in the 28th round of the 2008 draft by the New York Mets.

From Biola U.: Biola left-handed pitcher Jimmy Johnson has been selected by the New York Mets in the 28th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft held on Thursday and Friday. Johnson, who completed his senior season this last year, was the lone Eagle selected in the draft this season and the first since the 2006 draft. Johnson wrapped up his 2008 campaign with a 9-3 record and a 4.80 ERA. He posted 83 strikeouts to just 25 walks in 99.1 innings pitched for the Eagles. Johnson's best performance of the season came in a home start against Concordia University in which he did not allow a hit until there were two-outs in the ninth. Biola won the game 9-0. Johnson spent five years with Biola including a medical red-shirt season in his second year. He wraps up his career with a 23-11 record, a 4.56 ERA and 228 strikeouts.

In 2008, Johnson pitched for Brooklyn, going 5-0, 1.25, in 23 relief appearances. He also struck out 41 batters in 36.0 innings.

In September 2008, Patrick Hickey wrote on: - Jimmy Johnson- No one expected this guy to be half as good as he eventually turned out to be. A solid assortment of pitches, combined with solid command made him the king of the ‘Clones bullpen. How he’ll fare at higher levels is hard to determine, but you have to like the way he’s pitched in clutch situations this season. Things like that you just can’t teach. - Final Grade-A+

2009 brought 25 appearances in Savannah (1-1, 1.09) and 2 more at St. Lucie (1-1, 4.26).

Johnson’s combined two year professional record is: 7-2, 1.84, 60 appearances, 88-K, 88.0-IP.

1-1-10 Forecast: What more can you ask of a 28th rounder than averaging one strikeout per inning and an ERA under two? Johnson showed his human side in St. Lucie this past season, but he’s easily one of the bright sots in the Mets minor league pen. I expect him back with St. Lucie to start the 2010 season, but you may see him assigned to Binghamton.

Final 2010 stats: - 4-3, 4.93, 1.33, 28-G, 1-start, 33-K, 38.1-IP, 10-BB.

Kai Gronauer:

7-12-10: - When catcher Kai Gronauer signed a minor-league contract with the Mets out of Germany in April 2008, he was a virtual unknown in the United States. He came to prove himself, and he has started to do just that in his second full season. One of St. Lucie’s newest additions after several players moved up from Low-A Savannah mid-season, Gronauer was batting .400 with eight RBIs and a homer through his first 10 games in the Florida State League. “It was a big deal for me (to sign),” said Gronauer, who began playing for the German national team at 16. “It was great to get recognized first of all by an American organization, and of course, signing has always been a dream for me since I started playing baseball. I always wanted to get the chance to come over here and prove what I can do and get as high as possible.” - link

Carlos Gomez:

Speed, speed and more speed. That is Gomez' game. It was never more apparent than last season when Gomez singled, went to second on a ground out, and scored on Alexi Casilla's extra-inning single for the Minnesota Twins during Game 163 last season. The strong throw had no chance at catching the wickedly fast Gomez. Carlos has taken his speed game to the more-relevant National League this season, stealing six bases and no caught-stealings. - link

Trade Rumors:

The Mets are said to be in the market for pitching help, which is bizarre given that their pitching has performing well while their offense has struggled. Offense has been an issue for the New York Mets, even despite getting Jose Reyes back in the lineup. Fact is, offense will always be an issue for this team as long as they play in Citi Field. Nevertheless, they can do better. Potential Acquisitions: The Mets were linked to Cliff Lee before he joined the Rangers, and are now said to be in the hunt for Ted Lilly and Roy Oswalt.- link

Mike Pelfrey:

7-12 from: - link  - TRDMB’s 2nd Annual Mets First Half Report Card - Mike Pelfrey - A-: Faltering lately, but even his faltering is improved over the past…hot start cannot be forgotten as it came when we the team was dealing with Ollie, Maine, and rotation woes…is getting better across the board, and his youth, fitness, and growing arsenal of pitches can only suggest that more improvement is yet to come.
