Opening Day Lineup:
link - Do you see the weak logs? It shouldn’t be that hard. Mike Jacobs is now a Triple-A player for the Jays after proving he can’t hit major league pitching during his brief stay with the Mets. Gary Matthews Jr. had a .234 wOBA for the Mets, striking out in 41% of this plate appearances. Rod Barajas is currently on the DL, but has been below average with a .292 wOBA and 0.5 WAR on the season. Jeff Francoeur honestly doesn’t deserve to play baseball at any level professionally, despite how affable he may be. His .284 wOBA is made even worse by his tendency (or just self-afflicted rule) to swing at everything often and early. I won’t even mention Alex Cora. Many of those players have been replaced. Josh Thole has been very good during his limited time at catcher, Angel Pagan has been one of the best players in baseball this season, and Ike Davis is having a nice rookie year at first base. Still, this unsurprisingly hasn’t been enough for the medicore Mets. When you see that it took months for R.A. Dickey and Hisanori Takahashi to replace Oliver Perez and John Maine in the rotation, nobody should be surprised at the record of the Mets.
Cesar Puello:
link - Why He's Here: .538/.600/.654 (14-for-26), 1 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBIs, 4 R, 4 BB, 2 SO, 7-for-8 SB - The Scoop: Stop me if you've heard this one before. Puello projects as a five-tool right fielder—but only if his bat develops. Well, develop it has. When Puello and the Sand Gnats hosted Kannapolis on June 7, the teenager had slumped to a .229/.315/.276 batting line. Visions of a demotion to the short-season New York-Penn League must have danced in his head. But in 52 games since then, Puello has taken the Sally League by storm, batting .374/.456/.465 (70-for-187) while smacking 12 doubles and showing an exemplary 18-to-26 walk-to-strikeout ratio and a 26-for-33 (79 percent) showing in stolen bases. How far has he come? Puello now ranks 10th in the SAL in batting (.299) and second in steals (45) and runs scored (79).
Bryce Harper Enrolls:
link - Outfielder Bryce Harper, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, has enrolled in classes at the College of Southern Nevada and met the school's new coach, Chris Sheff, according to a baseball source. But that doesn't mean Harper will not sign with the Nationals. So far, Harper and the Nationals are not close to a deal and have until Aug. 16 to get one done or Harper will go back to college. The source said he expects the negotiations to heat up by Tuesday.
Jeurys Familia:
link - Jeurys Familia, RHP, Grade B-: 6.30 ERA for St. Lucie, 83/62 K/BB in 84 innings, 85 hits. Like Allen, he's gone backwards. Good strikeout rate, but getting killed by walks.
Yohan Almonte:
8-7 from: - link - Almonte is 5-3 with a 2.03 ERA, good for fifth-best in the league. In 57.2 innings, he has allowed 46 hits, 21 runs, 13 earned runs, and 11 walks, while striking out 37 batters. He has allowed one earned run or less in seven of his 10 starts, and has given up just one home run all year. Almonte ranks second in the league in innings pitched. Yohan -- a 21-year-old native of Sabana de la Mar, in the Dominican Republic -- was signed by the Mets as a non-drafted free agent in 2007.
