Reading’s Cisco One-Hits B-Mets, 5-0



Reading right-hander Mike Cisco pitched the best game of his three-year professional career to beat Binghamton 5-0 Thursday night at First Energy Stadium. He allowed just a hit and a walk and retired the final 25 hitters he faced for the first complete-game shutout of his career.



The B-Mets mustered their only baserunners in the first inning against Cisco. With one out, Jordany Valdespin doubled to right on a first-pitch fastball from the starter. He proceeded to steal third when Josh Satin struck out looking. Cisco then walked Sean Ratliff on four pitches to get to local product Zach Lutz, who popped out to third to end the inning, beginning a string of 25 straight that would go down.



Reading (63-66) jumped out to an early lead against Binghamton (62-67) starter Eric Beaulac, who was making his Double-A debut. Keoni DeRenne worked a walk to leadoff the first inning. After Timo Perez struck out, Michael Spidale lined a single to center, pushing the runner into scoring position. Tagg Bozied followed and chased DeRenne home with a single to right, which extended his hitting streak to 16 games.



The R-Phils were back at it in the second with a solo homer from Cody Overbeck to left-center, his 11th of the season, advancing the lead to 2-0.



Beaulac induced double-play groundballs in the third and fourth innings to erase runners and end innings, keeping the deficit at two.



However, Reading plated a third run off the righty in the fifth following a walk to Keoni DeRenne. Perez smacked an 0-2 fastball from Beaulac over the head of Ratliff in center, scoring the speedy Hawaiian to make it 3-0.



Bealac exited to the loss after five innings. He allowed three runs on six hits and walked six.



Reading’s final runs came in the sixth off reliever Eric Niesen. Kevin Nelson singled with one out and made his way home on DeRenne’s RBI double to right-center. DeRenne would later score on a Niesen wild pitch, creating the final margin, 5-0.



The loss marked the fifth time this season that Binghamton has been shutout and the first since Trenton shut out the B-Mets 6-0 at Waterfront Park June 12.
