He has a lean, smaller frame, but there is room to add some strength and more power to his swing. And while he did win the home run derby, I’m sure he would be the first to admit that he’s not a power hitter. He is a switch hitter though, and is short to the ball with gap-to-gap power. He drove a high fastball the opposite way to deep left field for a triple off of Ricky Jacquez in the fourth inning. He’s sound defensively and made a very good play in the first inning, ranging quickly to his right before throwing a strike to first base to throw out Travis Harrison.

He also continues to show off outstanding tools at shortstop, and is a very exuberant presence on the field.

He hits to all fields, hits all pitches, and is a good baserunner. In the infield you will not find too many fielders with softer hands than he has. I can see him being a favorite of the scouts come draft day for his potential as an offensive second baseman, maybe along the lines of a Placido Polanco type.

However, his raw tools shouldn't be discounted. The right-handed hitting shortstop continues to be one of my favorite players in the class because he hits with authority in game action against elite pitching. He also showed off plus raw power in batting practice and one of the most consistent line-drive swings at the event. At shortstop, he flashed his quick release and good first step. The profile here is very well-rounded, and Evans plays more like an advanced college middle infielder than a prep player.

Clemson Univ. - Trials Notes: Miller has a long frame with a lean build and thin hips. His physical projection is up for debate, but he'll certainly need to add a little strength to thrive at the next level. He can play across the infield right now, but his hands and range project best to the hot corner, with a chance to stick at second with a little better footwork and reps at the position. He's also athletic enough to shift to an outfield corner, if needed, but shows enough aptitude in the infield that it should not be required any time soon. At the plate, Miller gets good leverage in his swing, loading high with his hands and producing some backspin and carry when he gets hard contact. His power is to the gaps right now, but with a little more strength he could see some homerun pop with wood as he improves his bat speed (which is light right now against good velocity). The Clemson shortstop is one of three player returning from last year's USA CNT and will be draft eligible in 2011.

He's so rangy in build and his arm is fluid that he could play anywhere. If I was a collegiate coach, I'd even tinker with putting him on the hill to see what he possesses because he learns so quickly and his arm has strength to it. His wriy build in time will fill out and he has raw strength. The ball jumped off the bat when he squared it up well and he made contact vs each pitcher he faced, albeit, he wasn't facing kids in the upper 80's and low 90's quite like he did at TOS. I didn't see the PG events he attended, so I don't know how he did there. He's on my list to see for the spring and I know he's on the list of many. One scout I'll leave anonymous told me he turned him in as a 48 follow, 48 overall future potential. He didn't blaze down the base line but we know he can run, just not quick out of the box like some flyers are. He can improve that time with some minor work.

He showed just barely enough with the bat (.240/.350/.364 as a freshman in the SEC isn’t awful) to make him an interesting all-around prospect to watch going forward, rather than just another all glove, small bat player. Even if he doesn’t progress at the plate, he could still have himself a pro career. As the market for good defense continues to grow, players like Nola will likely see their draft stock get a boost. I also can’t be the only one who likes having a player on the premier baseball university in Louisiana with the last name “Nola,” right? I know LSU is in Baton Rouge and not New Orleans, but it still feels right.

That reminds me of a funny story…[story edited in order to maintain appearance that, yes, this is a family friendly website]…and that was the summer we learned a valuable lesson about Jon Favreau, organic peaches, nasty sunburns, and the power of love. Anyway, Grimes is coming off a darn fine freshman campaign. College numbers don’t tell the whole story, but a quick comparison between the freshman year numbers of the Wichita State shortstop and the consensus top college shortstops of 2009 and 2010 is interesting. Last season Grimes hit .294/.399/.467. In his freshman year, Grant Green, the top college shortstop off the board in 2009, hit .316/.388/.491. In Christian Colon’s first season, he hit .329/.406/.444. This ignores park factors, competition, and a slew of other important things to consider, but the raw rate stats are all pretty similar. Again, college numbers don’t tell the whole story. Grimes’s tools don’t match up with either Green’s or Colon’s, but he does appear to be a legitimate pro prospect in his own right. Grimes’s plus defense (good hands, great range, plus arm) will get him looks regardless of his development with the bat.

Shortstops who can handle themselves with the glove and stick are always at a premium. Enter Arizona State shortstop Deven Marrero. Marrero actually lead the Sun Devils in hitting last spring, posting a .397/.442/.628 line as a freshman. Playing for Cotuit in the Cape, Marrero hit .306/.385/.378. An above-average runner with solid range, smooth hands and a plus arm, Marrero has more than enough defensive ability to hold down shortstop long-term. His quick, simple swing should lead to consistently high batting averages with just enough patience to post quality on-base percentages. While there isn’t much in the way of power projection with Marrero, it’s hard to imagine a quality shortstop with his track record lasting too long on draft day.
