The Brooklyn Cyclones advanced to the New York-Penn League Championship Series with a 6-4 win over Jamestown in Game Three of the NYPL Semifinals on Thursday night. After losing the first game of the best-of-three series, the Cyclones battled back to win both games at MCU Park. The team had a 30-8 home record during the regular season, and will maintain home field advantage in the Championship Series, with home games on Sunday, September 12th and, if necessary, Monday, September 13th.
The Cyclones scored early on Thursday, when leadoff hitter Darrell Ceciliani doubled and later scored on a Cory Vaughn RBI groundout. The game was knotted up in the top of the second inning thanks to a rare home run surrendered by starting pitcher Chris Hilliard. Hilliard, who lead the league in wins (9) during the regular season, had surrendered just two home runs in his previous 79.1 innings of work.
Brooklyn reclaimed the lead in the second inning when Ceciliani struck again with a bases-loaded, two-RBI single that plated Blake Forsythe and Juan Centeno to put the Cyclones up 3-1.
In the third inning, Brooklyn added two more runs on a booming home run by Forsythe to dead centerfield. The home run is just the third over the 412 mark in center in the Coney Island ballpark’s 10-year history and pushed the Cyclones lead to 5-1.
The Jammers rallied back to score three runs off Hilliard in the top of the fifth inning, cutting Brooklyn's lead to one. They threatened further in the top of the seventh with two men on and no out, but T.J. Chism -- who took over for Hilliard -- fielded a sacrifice bunt attempt and cut down the lead runner at third, before Wes Wrenn came on to induce an inning-ending double play.
In the bottom of the eighth the Cyclones rallied for an insurance run on a Centeno RBI double to left scoring Will Cherry (who also doubled in the inning) giving Brooklyn a 6-4 lead going into the final frame.
Brooklyn's relievers held steady for the final two innings with Wrenn and Hamilton Bennett combining to shut down the Jammers offense. With the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Daniel Carela came on to get the final two outs in dramatic fashion -- both on strikeouts -- including Marcell Ozuna, the league's leading home run hitter.
