9/9/10

PRESS RELEASE: - Brooklyn 9, Jamestown 8

The Cyclones tied the NYPL Semifinal series at one game apiece on Wednesday night, beating Jamestown by a score of 9-8 in 12 innings. After almost three and a half hours, Brooklyn scored the winning run on a wild pitch that plated pinch-runner ZeEricka McQueen

The Cyclones gave up an early run in the top of the second inning but quickly answered back, scoring a run in the bottom of the inning thanks to a double by Jeff Flagg, a sacrifice bunt by Joe Bonfe, and an RBI groundout by Will Cherry.

Brooklyn plated four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as five Cyclones reached base; a Juan Centeno lead-off double followed by a single to left by James Schroeder (scoring Centeno), a single to left by Darrell Ceciliani (moving Schroeder to third), a sacrifice fly by J.B. Brown (scoring Schroeder), a two-out double by Cory Vaughn (scoring Ceciliani), and a hard-hit ball by Flagg forcing the shortstop to commit a throwing error allowing Vaughn to score. Flagg, unfortunately, pulled up with a leg injury on the play and left the game.

The Cyclones tacked on another run in the seventh inning thanks to a two-out single by Bonfe and a double by Cherry that gave the Cyclones a 6-3 lead.

Starting pitcher Angel Cuan threw a solid game, tossing seven innings and allowing three runs on four hits. He left with a three-run lead. In the top of the eighth, though, the Jammers rallied to score four runs. Johan Figuereo surrendered all four of the runs (three earned) in just one-third of an inning. Adam Kolarek eventually ended the inning, but Brooklyn again trailed by a run.

In the bottom of the eighth, the team fought back again, as Ceciliani drew a two-out walk, advanced on a wild pitch, and was driven in by Brown. On the play, the shortstop cut the ball off before it went to the outfield, but stumbled backwards as he made the play. Manager Wally Backman waved Ceciliani around third and sent him home. The ball beat Ceciliani to the plate, but a wide slide allowed the speedy leadoff hitter to score the tying run.

Hamilton Bennett came in for the top of the ninth and surrendered back-to-back bloop doubles that again put Brooklyn down by a run. Ryan Fraser came on to end the scoring, and Brooklyn again rallied back, as Bonfe delivered a single, followed by a single by Cherry, and a sacrifice fly from Centeno.

Fraser energized the Brooklyn crowd with three shutout innings in which he allowed just one hit and struck out five batters, before giving way to A.J. Pinera, who tossed a scoreless frame in the 12th.

In the bottom of the 12th, the hot-hitting Centeno sent a booming double to the wall in left-centerfield, and McQueen came on as a pinch runner. He was moved to third on a sac bunt by  Schroeder, and then scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
