Despite the craziness that occurs with company mergers, summer baseball league's, th girlfriend's summer soccer league, and the roommate's new Skyrim video game fascination.....I do occasionally still get to watch my beloved Mets on TV. One thing I've noticed lately is that every time Terry Collins announces that he's going to give Santana "extra rest" or if there's and off day in between his starts; Santana hasn't been very good. With this in mind I decided to dig a little deeper into the statistics.
These are Santana's starts so far via my friends over at SB Nation since work sucks and blocks all the good sports websites. At first glances you can quickly see the six 0.00 ERA starts all occurred on "normal" 5 days rest. Now if we do a side by side comparison of all 5 day rest starts vs 6+ day starts we get this.
We can see here that when Santana is on 5 days rest.....he's been flat out DOMINANT. 6+ days rest is a whole other story. His WHIP is way up as he has given up 37!!! more hits in 4.1 less Innings Pitched. Now I know he's just coming off of a major injury and you really can't do much when is comes to scheduled days off unless you skip someone's spot in the rotation.....But is TC giving Santana too much rest in between starts? What do you guys think? Also is this a trend that is significant throughout the entire pitching rotation? (i.e Is RA Dickey 3? bad starts on days of extra rest.)
