6/5/14

FINAL - Top 12 3B in 2014 MLB Draft

            1. Michael Chavis – Sprayberry (GA) HS –

1-30-14 - Michael Chavis | 3B/2B/OF | Sprayberry (Marietta, GA) | Commit: Clemson  Height/Weight: 5-foot-10/195 pounds  B/T: R/R  Draft Day Age: 18y 10m  Chavis hits. That’s the simplest description of the Clemson commit's profile. He utilizes a short and explosive swing that produces regular loud contact and allows him to both turn on velocity and let pitches travel on the outer half. The lack of load can lead to an abrupt entry into the swing and inconsistent barrel delivery—something that could potentially be exposed by more advanced pitching, even if it leads to more soft contact than empty swings. Those issues have yet to surface, however, and the core of the profile remains Chavis’ ability to put barrel to ball on a consistent basis. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=22705#.UurW2-Hoi5s.twitter

     2.  Taylor Sparks – UC Irvine –

1-3-14 – TTF Baseball - 49. Toronto Blue Jays — Taylor Sparks, 3B/1B, UC Irvine - The Big West Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore, the 6’-4”, 210 pound right-hander hit .360/.388/.581 over 55 games with 10 home runs and 50 RBI. He only drew six walks to 40 strikeouts, showing needed work on his approach. Defensively, he has the arm and actions to stick at the hot corner where his plus power would play well. He led Collegiate Team USA with a .396 average over 19 games and was 7-for-7 in stolen bases, showing good speed on the base paths. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-2/40753#ppGUqI6CbWFvzsPf.99

     3.  Jack Flaherty – Harvard-Westlake (CA) HS –

9-4-13 – Mack’s Mock Draft v1.0 – 7 – Padres – 3B Jack Flaherty – Harvard-Westlake (CA) HS – I rate Flaherty as the top power hitter in the draft. He has the natural power and, because the ball jumps off the bat, he projects as an above average BA hitter as well.  Only has an average arm so he probably projects to stay at third and not move into the outfield. Potential 35/125 hitter.

12-10-13 – TTF – Top 50 HS Players - 19. Jack Flaherty, 3B/RHP, Harvard-Westlake HS (CA) - Flaherty is a 6’-4”, 200-pound right-hander with massive power potential. The ball jumps off his bat and his plus bat speed suggests he should hit for a high average, as well. His arm, instincts and power potential profile well at the hot corner. He has shown above-average speed but probably isn’t a guy who is going to steal many bases. Playing for a national powerhouse, he will get plenty of attention this year. He is a baseball player in every sense of the word. Committed to North Carolina. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50/40532#zz88YJZTOG8iEa1Z.99

      4.  Blake Wiggins  -

PG = Blake Wiggins is a 2014 SS/C/3B with a 6-2 195 lb. frame from Little Rock, AR who attends Pulaski Academy. Strong mature build, especially in the lower half. Showed athletic actions and good footwork behind the plate considering repetitions, plenty of arm strength, received the ball cleanly, 1.88 best pop time, accurate throws. Has the tools to play third base as well. Right handed hitter, good weight shift, pretty short hand path to the ball, strong swing with loft pull power, tends to open his front side early, has present bat speed. Good student, verbal commitment to Arkansas.  -  http://www.perfectgame.org/players/playerprofile.aspx?ID=292110

    5.  Joey Pankake  -  South Carolina

8-14-13 – Through The Fence – Top 50 Prospects – 40. Joey Pankake, SS, South Carolina - Reports are Pankake is going to be playing all over the field this year. He will be the team’s closer, play some outfield, move around the infield, maybe coach and possibly take on Joey Chestnut for the Coney Island hotdog eating contest — all in hopes of raising his draft stock. Those last two were a stretch, but the rest is true. At 6’-1” and 200 pounds, he has an advanced approach at the plate, a canon arm and excellent bat speed. He showed developing power as a sophomore, hitting .311/.387/.496 over 62 games with 11 home runs and drew 29 walks to just 29 strikeouts. I think being able to stick at shortstop would increase his draft stock the most, but what do I know. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50-prospects/36463#mwWwsFxSUZy7YC5V.99

6.  Sean Bouchard – Cathedral Catholic (CA) HS –7.

7-25-13 – Top 30 High School Prospects For 2014 Draft - 21. Sean Bouchard, 3B, Cathedral Catholic HS (CA) - 6'3/190, R/R, Draft Day Age: 18.06, UCLA commit - Quick Take: Bouchard is teammates with #29 prospect and fellow UCLA commit LHP Brady Aiken from a powerhouse San Diego area prep team that also produced 2013 4th rounder LHP Stephen Gonsalves (Twins). Bouchard has above average speed, easy actions at third and an average arm to go with a good mix of bat speed, strength and projection that allow you to project average power to profile as an everyday player. http://sbb.scout.com/2/1310090.html

7       Joe Littell – Stillwater (OK) HS –

8-13-13 - The Perfect Game All-American Classic in San Diego - * One name that really stood out to me that I wasn’t familiar with coming into the weekend was Stillwater High School (Okla.) third-baseman Joe Littell. Littell gets very good extension in his swing, and the bat stayed in the zone as well as any hitter I saw over the weekend. There are some very good hot corner prospects in this year’s class, but Littell might be at the top of the list for me now. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2013/08/thoughts-on-perfect-game-all-american-classic/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

8. Montrell Marshall  -  Snelville (GA) HS

Montrell Marshall is a 2014 SS/3B with a 6-4 190 lb. frame from Snellville, GA who attends South Gwinnett HS. Has really grown and filled out his frame in the last year, looks 6-6/215 now. Retains his athleticism, 6.94 runner, smooth easy actions defensively, stays balanced well, strong arm with carry, works through the ball, third base in his immediate future but will be very good there with his actions. Right handed hitter, low hand start, closed double tap load, loose swing with length and bat speed, projects obvious power but with adjustments. Difficult player to evaluate due to physical stature and changes but obvious high ceiling athleticism. Good student, verbal commitment to Auburn.

9.  Jared Walker  -  Powder Springs (GA) HS

Jared Walker is a 2014 3B/SS/OF with a 6-2 185 lb. frame from Powder Springs, GA who attends Mceachern HS. Nice athletic build, good present strength with more to come. 7.00 runner, big right field arm strength, on line throws with plus carry, loose athletic actions to the ball. Arm strength plays big at third base as well, live bodied actions with a quick first step, gets a bit snatchy with the glove at times. Left handed hitter, calm approach with good balance, big wrap to start his swing, whippy barrel with very good bat speed, loose and fluid through the hitting zone, hard right centerfield contact, very projectable hitting tools. High ceiling prospect. Verbal commitment to Kennesaw State.

10.  Bobby Bradley  -  Gulfport (MS) HS

Bobby Bradley is a 2014 3B/1B with a 6-2 220 lb. frame from Gulfport, MS who attends Harrison Central HS. Large frame, strong physical build. Big raw power, very strong at contact, ball jumps off his bat when he squares it up. Spread stance, uppercut swing path, deep hand load, uses strong lower half well, very aggressive swings and approach. Long loose arm action with present arm strength, Good student. Verbal commitment to LSU

11.. Joe Gillette  -  Scotts Valley (CA) HS

Joe Gillette is a 2014 3B/SS with a 6-3 190 lb. frame from Scotts Valley, CA who attends Scotts Valley HS. Long lean athletic build, very projectable physically. 6.54 runner, gliding actions defensively, quick first step at third base, good footwork, quick exchange, solid arm strength with on line accuracy, tools to be a top level defensive player. Right handed hitter, straight stance with a rock back load, swings hard and can be overaggressive at times, present bat speed with plenty more to come with additional strength, hard pull line drive contact, ball jumps when squared, showed the ability to go up the right centerfield gap as well. High ceiling athlete who could blossom as he gets stronger. Excellent student, verbal commitment to Oregon State.
