June 1st 2014 -- Mets 4, Phillies 3 (11 innings)

Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia, Lucas Duda launched a 2 run homer (8) to snap a 2 all tie in the top of the 11th, the Mets beat the Phillies 4-3.  The Mets and Phils played their third straight extra inning affair.  Jonathon Niese started for the Mets and gave the Mets bullpen just what it needed, innings. Niese went 8 strong innings holding the Phils to just 2 runs.  The Mets took the lead 1-0 in the top of the 4th when Chris Young’s sac-fly scored Wright from third.  In the bottom of the 4th Ryan Howard hit a 2 run homer (11) off Niese to take a 2-1 lead.  The Mets tied the game in the top of the 6th on Curtis Granderson’s sac-fly.  After Niese departed after  8 innings, the Met bullpen came up strong again as Scott Rice, Vic Black, Josh Edgin all shutdown the Phils.  Edgin who struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th picks up his first win on the year he’s 1-0. Jenrry Mejia pitched the bottom of the 11th  and yielded a solo homer to Marlon Byrd (8), but held on for this 6th save.  Niese went 8 innings allowed the 8 hits 2 runs (both earned) he walked 2 and struck out 6.  Cole Hamels pitched a strong 7 innings for the Phillies but both starters were not involved in the decision. Phillippe Aumont took the loss . The Mets managed 8 hits on the day, but they came when it counted. Eric Campbell had a pair of hits on the day. The Mets now stand at 27-29 overall and 14-12 on the road and have now won 5 of 6 and have clinched this 5 games series with the Phillies now leading 3 games to 1. Monday is the final game of this series Bartolo Colon (4-5  4.73) goes for the Mets, Roberto Hernandez (2-2 3.76) goes for Philadelphia

Every time we try and throw this (75 win) team in the garbage, mentally, they have a series like this.

Fine starting pitching, upgraded pen....but then when the fifth best batting average, in June, is Ruben Tejada's .224, hard to feel they have enough to contend.

Happy to see Eric Campbell do well (may he play more) and perhaps the arrival of more aggression at the plate from Duda who, at .240, is their 4th best hitter.

One more thought: I can never understand when a guy feels a ribcage tweak why he is not automatically benched for 2-3 days. Not doing so often seems to exacerbate the injury. And then the time off is a lot more.
