6/3/14

June 2nd 2014 -- Mets 11, Phillies 2

Monday night in Philadelphia Wilmer Flores went 2 for 5 with a 2 run double and a grand slam (1), the Mets win 11-2. The Mets took a 1-0 in the 2nd on an RBI double by Lucas Duda.  In the 6th David Wright hit a 2 run double off the wall in center to make it 3-0. Later in the inning Flores came up with the bases juiced and doubled home 2 to make it 5-0.  The Phillies got a run back in the 6th and the 7th, but in the top of the 9th leading 5-2, Curtis Granderson added a 2 run single and then Flores put the icing on the cake with the grand slam to cap the game and the series. Matt den Dekker who has replaced the injured Juan Lagares on the roster went 4 feet over the center field wall to rob Ryan Howard of a homer. Then den Dekker came up huge again in bottom of the 3rd when he threw out Reid Brignac at home saving another run. On the mound Bartolo Colon continues to get better and better as he went 7 innings allowing just 6 hits 2 runs he walked 3 and struck out 5.  Dana Eveland made his Met debut in the 8th with 2/3 scoreless. Daniel Murphy had 3 hits on the night, David Wright added 2. Flores had the night of his life with his 1st  homer on the year and 6 RBI. Colon got the win and evens his record now at 5-5. Roberto Hernandez takes the loss he’s now 2-3.  The Mets take 4 out of 5 in this rare 5 game set. On the season the Mets climb to one game under .500 at 28-29 and are now an impressive 15-12 on the road. Next up the Mets are in Chicago to face the Cubs in a three game set. Tuesday night Zach Wheeler  (2-5  4.31) goes for the Mets. Jake Arrieta (1-1  3.20) goes for the Cubs

I have been posting that Flores' bat in the lineup is one step towards giving a pulse to a moribund (I like that word) offense. Last nite was Exhibit A for the prosecution for the case of the Met Fans vs. Terry Collins. "Your honor, may we present these 6 Wilmer Flores RBIs as evidence?" Keep Wimer's offense in the lineup in friendly Chicago....a perfect place to see if he can get on an offensive roll.

Great game by Matt the Knife too, as he knifed thru the Philly sky to snatch Ryan Howard's blast by several feet above the fence. Add some more offense, Matty, and stick around. Swing early and often to minimize the Ks.

Hey, it hasn't been easy, but we are on a roll. Go Mets.

It would be fun to play in the City of Brotherly Love all year.

I lived there in 1984 as manager of WIP-AM radio and I never found a city that hated New Yorkers more than that town. They felt that NYC was like an umbrella hanging over their heads preventing them from seeing the world or arts, stage, and sports. I simply hated it there and most people that lived there.

I'm looking forward to seeing the lineup for the first Chicago game. I assume den Dekker, Abreu, and Flores will be in it.

Besides a basic hatred for Philly, Mac, isn't it great to whip a team that robbed us of a few division titles several years ago? Also great to go to another hitters' park.

My daily Brownie Points tally - another HR, double, and walk. 13 HRs now in 140 at bats, plus 13 other extra base hits. Andrew against lefties in Vegas is beyond Ruthian: 16 for 32 with 2 doubles and 7 HRs, working out to a 1219 slugging %. .730 slug % overall (hey, even .583 vs. righties).

Boy, would he be a great platoon with Duda at first. Duda has a .330 slugging % lifetime vs. lefties. I love Eric Campbell still, maybe Chris Young can strain an oblique too to give him some real playing time). (Nah, don't wish anyone would get hurt, just a line up preference - and a strong one).

Vegas boys (Dekker, Flores) held up the Vegas end of the bargain last nite for the Metsies. I'd like to see Brownie graduate too.
