Jack being Jack, and Wheeler being Wheeler.
I still see Edgin as part of the newbies - interesting then to see that Edgin, Leather, Morris and Wheeler each pitched an inning in their last game - combined? 4 innings, 12 K's. Sweet.
Is Bowman the next DeGrom? Love those two 12 K games this year.
Matz? We're working on getting you a locker in Citifield - don't dawdle please.
Mazzilli - the surge continues, and for Jeff McNeil too - nice. Mazzilli after a slow start has hit .350 with 11 extra base hits since May started. Very impressive. And except for a 2 game 0 for 11 a week or so ago, McNeil has been tremendous. Two guys to really watch.
- if we keep them all, Familia, Edgin, Black, and Mejia can be a knock out pen
- get Matz to Bingo. He's going to be next year's shiny new toy
2012 Harvey
2013 Wheeler
2014 Syndergaard
2015 Matz
speaking of shiny new toys:
2011 Gee/Niese
2012 Harvey
2013 Wheeler
2014 Syndegaard/deGrom
2015 Matz
2016 Several candidates for one Spot
2017 Several candidates for one Spot
and that does not even count relievers or position players
Thomas-
I fear you may be annointing Bowman a bit prematurely. As his competition has stiffened, he has regressed. Only time will tell, but I think that Matz is the next big thing after deGrom, Montero and Thor. Tapia seems to be finding himself too. Watcch out for him.
Beck being Beck was nice to see. He looks like Leather Lite. Strikes out fewer, but walks fewer too. Will he ever not be thought of as "The Other Wheeler"?
We have a very nice crop of relievers coming up through the ranks. Sewald, Fontanez, Alvarez, Coles, are all names to be reckoned with, in addition to those you mentioned.
Based on the above, it seems poor Rafael Montero is 2014's forgotten man. Don't throw dirt on his grave just yet. He may have MLB jitters, but he a is a quality starter and he will be back and in the mix before 2014 is done.
Herb, I still think that with the Mets needing position players that Montero and deGrom are the first to be shopped.
That's not a knock in them but the fact that the Mets have needs in offense and an embarrassment of pitching to deal from.
With the pitching in the organization, it's conceivable that the Mets could fill out an entire staff (rotation and pen) with pitchers who have never played in another MLB uniform save Vic Black's 5 games with Pittsburgh.
