Mets Minor League Report: June 10, 2014

MMLR Player of the Day: Binghamton RHSP Angel Cuan

As bad of a day as yesterday was for the Mets’ farm system, (0-6) today was just about as good of a day, with the Mets’ farm teams going 6-1.

Las Vegas (36-28) lambastes Colorado Springs (27-35) 9-3.

Giancarlo Alvarez (W, 5-2) was extremely sharp: 6.0 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K.
Zack Thornton: 0.2 IP, R, 2 H, 2 BB, K.
Miguel Socolovich: 0.1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB.
Buddy Carlyle: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, BB.

Travis d’Arnaud: 2-4, BB, R.
Josh Satin: 2-4, 2B, BB, 2 R.
Omar Quintanilla: 3-5, HR, 3B, 2B, 5 RBI, 2 R. (Q was only a single short of the cycle. He got all 3 XBH's but could not scratch out a single in 2 additional at bats.)

Game 1: Binghamton (33-30) batters Akron (39-25) 8-1.

Angel Cuan (W, 2-3) with a complete game 7.0 inning win: R, 5 H, 0 BB, 4 K.

Kevin Plawecki: 2-4, R.
Matt Clark: 2-4, R.
Jayce Boyd: 2-3, RBI, R.
Dustin Lawley: 1-4, 2B, 3 RBI, R.
Darrell Ceciliani: 2-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R.

Game 2: Binghamton (34-30) again batters Akron (39-26) 10-5 to sweep.

Hamilton Bennett pitched 3.0 shaky innings: 3 R, 5 H, BB, 3 K.
T.J. Chism: (W, 1-0) 2.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H, BB.
Jon Velasquez: 1.2 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 2 BB, K.
Jack Leathersich struck out the one man he was brought in to face. (Surprised?)

Kevin Plawecki: 2-4, 2 RBI, R. (After a slow start, Plawecki raised his avg. to .344 by hitting .359 in May and .471 thus far in June.)
Dustin Lawley: 2-4, HR, 3 RBI, R.
Travis Taijeron: 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R.
Darrell Ceciliani: 1-3, 3B, 2 R.
Xorge Carrillo: 2-3, HR, 3 RBI, R.

St. Lucie (36-29) slams Jupiter (27-38) 6=3.

 Luis Cessa: (W, 5-4) 5.0 IP, 3 R, 7 H, 3 BB, 3 K.
Jake Keubler: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, K.
Randy Fontanez: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 K.

T.J. Rivera: 3-5, 2B, RBI, R.
Jairo Perez: 2-5, HR, 2 RBI, R.
Cam Maron: 3-5, R.
Maikis De La Cruz: 2-4, RBI, R.

Savannah (42-20) edges Kannapolis (29-34) 3-2.

Ricky Knapp: 7.0 IP, R, 5 H, 3 BB, 4 K.
Darwin Frias: (W, 4-0) 1.0 IP, 0 R, H, 0 BB, K.
Robert Coles: (S, 11) 1.0 IP, R, 3 H, 0 BB, 2 K.

Gavin Cecchini: 2-4.
Amed Rosario: 1-4, 3B, RBI, R. Getting off to a very weak start, (batting .133) the 18 year old Rosario seems seriously overmatched at Low A Savannah. He has been striking out in one of every three at bats, (11 of 30) while drawing only one BB. Perhaps a transfer to a short season team would be beneficial.

DSL Mets1 (3-6) drop DSL Mariners (2-7) 8-4.

Juan Marte: 4.0 IP, 2 R, H, (HR) 3 BB, 4 K.
Richard Reina: (W, 1-0) 2.0 IP, 0 R, H, BB, 3 K.
Claudio Merilan: 1.0 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 3 BB.
Bladimil Vallejo: (S, 1) 2.0 IP, 0 R, H, 0 BB.

Oliver Pascual: 3-4, 2B, BB, 2 R.
Ricardo Cespedes: 2-4, 2B, RBI, 2 R.
Edwin Diaz: 2-3, 3B, BB, 2 RBI.

DSL Yankees2 (6-3) clobber DSL Mets2 (5-3) 12-7.

Mandy Gonzalez: 4.0 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 4 K.
Carlos Hernandez: (L, 0-2) 2.2 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 2 BB, 3 K.
Jean Alvarez: 1.0 IP, 3 R, 0 H, 4 BB. (a rather unusual line)
Santos Infante: 0.1 IP, 0 R, H, BB.
Walter Rasquin: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 H. 0 BB. Perfect. It appears that the Mets are giving Rasquin an opportunity to make it as a pitcher. In limited AB’s both this year and last, he has hit below the Mendoza line.

Yeffry De Aza: 2-5, RBI.
Victor Moscote: 2-5. RBI.
Leadoff hitter, Ysidro Pierre: 0-0, 2 BB, 2 R, 2 SB.

Smith started out the same way and made the adjustments. I would like to see if Amed can do the same. I think a move to a short season team has been the plan all along. You can't have one of you top SS prospects DHing. Unless they planned to promote Cecchini.

Hey Richard, Smith did not strike out like Amed has. But you make a good point - we need to all keep in mind that Amed had the Platinum Sombrero in his first game (0-5, 5 Ks). Drop that out and #'s don't look so bad.

So we don't see him playing, just his stats, but based on stats after dropping game 1, not so bad, even in Ks, so I'd give him more time in Savannah to see how he adjusts.

#'s since May started (.384, 19 extra base hits, more than an RBI per game in those 34 games) suggest to me that Plawecki will not just make the Mets fairly soon, he will be a major league star.

How is Plawecki's defense? Can he play other positions, say 1st base? If d'Arnaud does work out can Plawecki be more valuable to us as a 1st baseman than as trade bait?

@Richard

Defensively, Plawecki has improved to the point where he'll probably settle in at about MLB average.

He has played some 1B on occasion last season with PSL in order to give him rest from behind the plate while keeping his bat in the line-up. He has not played 1B this season though and long term does not profile as a fit at 1B defensively

d'Arnaud is raking today.
2 homeruns and a double. Mets scored 14 runs so far so everyone is hitting.

Well, the Rosario comments become moot. I never thought I had that much power, but no sooner did I suggest the transfer to a short season team . . . voila, Amed is on his way to Brooklyn.

the Brooklyn roster is up on their web site

Brooklyn was always the plan for Amed. They put him in Savannah to get him some extra at bats. He was D.H.ing. There is no way that a prospect like Rosario was going to DH long term. It was obvious the plan was to get him 30 to 40 extra at bats before the short season teams started.

Richard and Herb -

Actually, Rosario got his first promotion to Savannah as a 'gift' for raking in extended camp... it was originally scheduled for1, maybe 2 games
