C.J. Nitkowski wrote an interesting article for Fox Sports saying that the Mets approach of using multiple pitchers as closers ‘could start a trend that may change baseball’. This is hilarious. Going back to aluminum bats could change baseball. Putting umpires on the pitcher’s mound could change baseball. But using Jenrry Mejia and Jeurys Familia both as closers probably is nothing more than a numbers game.

Still, let’s give Nitkowski the benefit of double and add in Vic Black here. You now have three pitchers with wipeout stuff and maybe it’s less the pitcher and more the freshness when the situation comes around. You also (I’m Sandy-thinking now) don’t have to pay any of them big closer money.

The best part about articles being written like this is there’s a better chance now that you will never see any of these three guys ever again pitch in either the 5th or 6th inning. My hopes, when either Rafael Montero comes back as a reliever, or when Bobby Parnell returns next year, you won’t see any of them in the 6th inning either.

You add these five with the projected 2015 rotation (Harvey, Wheeler, Syndergaard, Gee, Niese), than add in one of the rotation guys that didn’t make the cutoff (say Colon) as the long man, and you’ve got a kick-ass pitching staff.

You ask where is deGrom?

He’s wearing an LAD uniform J

It’s June, so this is probably a good time to start looking at the teams that have no chance of making it to the playoffs this year and may be trying to clear some salary.

Did I say Cubs again?

It’s pretty bad when your team has less than $93mil in salary and $19mil is being paid to Alfonzo Soriano, who’s not on your team anymore.

The Cubs have an interesting situation at shortstop. They’ve signed Starlin Castro to a $60mil contract that runs through 2019. Normally, the Cubs tend to sign long term deals and immediately start looking for ways of getting out of them, but the fans love Castro who has become a star in Chicago.

They also have two ‘prospect’ that have both hit the AAA level. Javier Baez was picked 8th overall in the 2011 draft; however, he hasn’t developed defensively and now projects as the possible future second baseman for Chicago. This still leaves 22-year old Arismendy Alcantara. He’s a gap hitter with pop that has a cannon arm. He’s also under team control well into the next decade.

As we know, the Cubs are already rumors to trade Jeff Samardzija this month and Jason Hammel’s contract expires at the end of this season.
I would think the Mets could come up with one of their young pitchers to find themselves a new shortstop here.

Toby Hyde  did a nice job of breaking out the starters at the A+ and A level. It was an honest piece, which basically said that the only guy that seems to have a guarantee to reach the Mets rotation someday would be Steven Matz.

Matz will most probably be moved to Binghamton (along with CF Brandon Nimmo and 2B Dilson Herrera) just after the all-star game in the Florida league.

There’s a lot of talent at both Savannah and St. Lucie, but there just isn’t anyone except Matz that stands out (like a Syndergaard or Montero). The good news is we said the same thing about Jacob deGrom and look what he’s doing.
Check the post out.

There was lots of chatter regarding the five year extension signed by 1B Jon Singleton with Houston. Estimates on the amount of the contract range from $10-$30.5mil, though what would have been his first year of free agency ($13mil team option). Other agents are calling for Singleton’s agent’s head, though, in the long run he could turn out to be another Ike Davis and the only people that will benefit will be his children.

(final details on deal -  $1.5-2014, $2mil 2015-2018, $2.5mil ($500K buyout) 2019, $5mil ($250K buyout) 2020, $13mil-2021 ($250K buyout)

All this did was make me run to the Cot site to see if there was anyone currently on the Mets that Sandy and Company should be trying to put a deal together like this one.

Based on it being a five year, deal, it would only be worth the Mets while if the five year period included at least two years past the arbitration period the player was currently playing through.

So, your contract would be the remainder of this year and the additional years of 2015-2019.

This leaves you Lucas Duda, Ruben Tejada, Dillon Gee, Eric Young Jr., Buddy Carlyle, and Dana Eveland to pick from.

See anybody?

And lastly,

The Mets are currently working their way through a six game road trip that could return them home solidly entrenched into second place in their division. This is going to be one of those nail biting wild car races between 6-8 average team, two of which will prevail because a few of their average players step over the line. One of those teams could be the Mets but it’s not going to happen it they return to CitiField and the stands are either empty or filled with wise-ass negative fans.

So, you wanted a pennant race and it looks like you might have one. Now jump in the water and get wet and help this team get through June.

I saw Gant last year, sat right behind home plate, and came away unimpressed. He has posted some fine numbers, however. OTOH, I'm not a scout.

Soriano's salary dump still mystifies me? They should of just kept him for the probably $2 million they saved. And especially to the skanks? We should of jumped all over him instead of went for C Young, would of saved us a few million.

I think the odds of deGrom to the Dodgers is slim to none, if this is referring to a Pederson for deGrom deal. The Dodgers have a surplus of starting pitchers also. They may be interested in upgrading. They showed interest in David Price. The only way they would be interested in deGrom is if they could include him in a package to someone like Tampa Bay for a Price. They do need help in the pen but I still don't think you trade a guy like Pederson for help in the pen. They can do the same from with in by using Zach Lee and keep Pederson. Is deGrom more desirable to a team like Tampa Bay than Pederson. Maybe if we add Nimo.

Mack,
Nice article today.
but, did Alderson sneak into your computer and add in that last paragraph?
Let's not blame the fans for the players performance now.
They are big boys that get paid alot of money to succeed or fail all on their own.

Is it me or does anyone else feel like you could place last nights loss at CY feet or TC's feet for playing CY over Abreu? How many men did he leave on base? If the Mets want to win then Abreu should be startng at this point CY got his chance and he simply isnt producing: .195/.285/.338... eat the remaining 4 million and change and try to win some ball games. I'm dreading the possibility of seeing both Youngs in the lineup at the same time. Wasted a great pitching performance last night.

Matz will be a goodie for sure, but there has to be some one or two guys minimum that emerge as future starters, for Mets or someone else. Gee did, for example, and who saw that coming when his last season in Buffalo, he was 4.96 ERA (off top of my head). Might be no other guaranteed starters, but some will get there.

Gant is ok...projects to the pen someday if he holds up

nor did anyone really see deGrom coming, which asks the question... do we keep BOTH Gee and deGrom for our 2015 rotation, build them around Harvey and the contract (Colon) and offer up the rest until we're left with one left?

****Raises hand and points to top prospect list on right hand side (DeGrom was #7)****

Dont forget Hefner next year.

Hefner could be a very valuable piece of the pie next year... a wonderful 'long man' option

Hey Mack

I'd keep deGrom for his lethal bat. He was just seen giving Chris Young batting tips the other day, but walked away shaking his head.

Gee, after his circulation concerns in 2012, I would be more concerned with (could it return) - so I'd trade Gee. Probably fine, but I still wonder if pitching on cold nights are a challenge for him.

I actually was watching deGrom over the past few years based on his stats, not knowing a ton about him but very cognizant of how fast he was rising thru the organization (similar to Montero) and figuring something must have been better than his decent but not stunning stats. As soon as I saw him up here, I got it. He's real good (oh, and that bat...)

Wheeler has been dominant his last couple of starts. I'm expecting more hiccups this season but he's progressing nicely and his stuff is filthy when on. When he's 'fully cooked' he'll be SP1 material and potentially slotted 3rd or 4th in the rotation, no way should he be traded.

Your core rotation is Harvey, Niese, Wheeler, Syndergaard, and maybe Matz.

Your bullpen core is likely Familia, Edgin, Black, and Mejia.

Everyone else is bait.

Weird, but seeing Wheeler's name made me think of Wheeler II (Jeff Beck Wheeler).

I was curious about him the other day, seeing he succeeds most often, with an occasional really bad game. He is the most Jekyll and Hyde guy I think I have ever seen stat-wise, but in a way that is promising.

This year and last, in his 10 bad games, he has (off the top of my head) given up 22 earned runs in 10 innings.

In his 47 other games? Dude has thrown 60 innings, just THREE earned runs, 95 Ks.

Two extremes. Why good? because I'd rather have a guy who is very, very good most of the time with an occasional complete meltdown, that a mediocre guy who is so-so all the time.

Don't know if Wheeler could ever make it, but his results to date would have him in the pen in games we are behind. Most times, he'd keep us close. Others, well, find something else to do as the meltdown occurs. I am very interested to see how he progresses.

Now that they have a Jeff Beck Wheeler, maybe they can sign a Leslie West Montero or something. Rock on!
