With apologies to The Clash, it's time to play that game of roster decisions. The Wilpons were highly disingenuous with the fan base when they said there was a plan for contention during the 2014/2015 time frame. They sold that bill of goods to David Wright, too, when they paid him off to stay here for a hometown discount with the promise they would be putting a competitive team on the field. Had they been honest with everyone, they would have told the fans they were doing everything possible to ensure a long term contender which, unfortunately, would have included trading David Wright rather than extending him for too many years and too much limited money.
So here we are at the precipice of another losing season,
this time tempered only by the Philiadelphia Phillies decrepitude. The pitching is still here (though between
injuries and an inexplicable about-face by Rafael Montero) it’s not exactly
panning out as planned. Going forward
you need to decide who is key to the future of the franchise and who has to
go. Needless to say, you have a couple
of immovable contracts on the books for Curtis Granderson and David
Wright. You have to figure they’re here
for the long haul regardless of performance.
So let’s see what other options we have if we were going to start with a
blank sheet of paper.
First Base
Lucas Duda is still not aggressive enough to inspire
confidence he’ll be better than the lower third of first basemen in the
league. He’s one of the few power threats in the lineup,
but his sinking average makes him someone that pitchers look forward to facing,
not fear in the batter’s box. Allowing
him to occupy 1st base for the remainder of the year pretty much
guarantees a hefty raise as he accumulates enough in HRs and RBIs to make him
more expensive than the last 1st basemen unceremoniously dispatched
to the Pirates.
The short term solution would be to promote Alan Dykstra
from AAA to play in place of Duda. This
move would depress Duda’s salary for next season (if he’s indeed part of the
future) and let you see what you have with Dykstra who is the poster child for
OBP. If you feel compelled to keep up
the platoon nonsense, you have Eric Campbell and AAA’s Josh Satin waiting for
the right handed ABs.
Second Base
Arguably your most valuable trade chip, Daniel Murphy is a
hard worker and solid producer whose defensive and baserunning gaffes are not
so frequent that they overwhelm his positive contributions at the plate. He’s proven he can hit major league pitching
over the past several years and he’s left handed to boot. While you could argue that for these very
reasons he should be part of the nucleus going forward, the fact remains you
have to give to get and there is precious little in the Mets cupboard in terms
of proven major league talent other teams would accept. You have alternatives in Wilmer Flores, Josh
Satin or even Terry Collins’ favorite, Eric Young, Jr.
Shortstop
Ruben Tejada is not the answer. Keep him for the former Omar Quintanilla role
if you must, but stop the madness and fill the black hole. If it’s not going to be Wilmer Flores and you’re
not ready to rush Wilfredo Tovar or Matt Reynolds to the majors, then you have
to get someone from outside the organization.
C
Promote Juan Centeno and please stop with the over-30 career
.200 hitters. They’re fine for backup
roles but you need to see who is worthy and capable of major league opportunities. Both Anthony Recker and Taylor Teagarden have
had 4-6 years to establish themselves and failed to do so. Why waste ABs on either of them? Even at that, Centeno is probably auditioning
for a role as a backup or as a trade candidate with Travis d’Arnaud still
considered the primary catcher for the future until Kevin Plawecki is
ready. I’m assuming TdA gets another
shot come August and to begin 2015.
OF
With Juan Lagares on the DL and Curtis Granderson set to
make Jason Bay money, you have two of the three slots filled unless you really
want to roll the dice and offer up Lagares in trade. He too would be attractive to another team,
but the other CF options available in-house at the major and minor league
levels – Chris Young, Matt den Dekker, Kirk Nieuwenhuis – are all unappealing
and not long term solutions. Even the
left fielder choices leave a lot to be desired.
Still, I’d rather see Andrew Brown and Eric Campbell trying to establish
themselves by playing regularly than I would more of Chris Young, Eric Young or
Bobby Abreu.
SP
Before he went down with his injury, Dillon Gee was showing
that the latter part of 2013 was not a fluke.
Jon Niese is having the best season of his career. Bartolo Colon has had a few stinkers but in
his last four starts is pitching to a sub 2.00 ERA. Daisuke Matsuzaka has made himself into a
trade chip. Jacob de Grom probably
wishes he could take the thin air of Las Vegas with him as he’s turning into
the ultimate hard luck pitcher. Matt
Harvey and Jeremy Hefner are down for the count. Rafael Montero seemingly got spooked with his
first big league exposure and it’s carried over on his return to AAA. Noah Syndergaard is injured (non-pitching
side) but still shaky with his command.
Zack Wheeler is still searching for consistency.
Now you have to decide which of these pitchers are part of
your future. If it was up to me, the
no-brainers are Matt Harvey, Jon Niese, Jacob de Grom and one of Rafael Montero
and Noah Syndergaard. Zack Wheeler has
more value than do the other youngsters because he has shown he can pitch at
this level, hence he would net more in trade.
Bartolo Colon is probably an ASB salary dump and Dice-K could similarly
net a warm body in the upper minors. The
real key is Dillon Gee showing he is healthy.
Although he’s outpitched Niese for his career, he’s right handed as is
everyone else as rotation possibilities.
Niese’s left handedness and favorable contract terms make him the one to
keep. Gee should net a fairly good
return given his modest salary and stellar production even though he’s not a
classic power pitcher. Hefner is a AAAA
filler for injuries/incompetence.
Hopefully we’ll see progression of other pitchers to AAA next season who
might fill that role, too.
RP
In the bullpen you’re starting to see the emergence of an
under-30 group that is highly respectable.
Jeurys Familia, Vic Black, Josh Edgin and Jenrry Mejia all should be
kept right where they are. Carlos Torres
is a little bit older, but Thursday’s implosion notwithstanding, he’s been a
terrific pitcher in his middle inning role.
Bobby Parnell hopefully will be coming back as well, so for once going
into the next off-season there shouldn’t be a mad scramble for scrap heap pickups. You also have Zack Thornton, Miguel
Socolovich and Ryan Reid doing fairly well in AAA with Joel CarreƱo succeeding
in relief (but failing thus far as a starter).
So what do we have here to trade to improve the club?
- Dillon Gee
- Daniel Murphy
- Bartolo Colon
- Rafael Montero or Noah Syndergaard
- Zack Wheeler
- Daisuke Matsuzaka
It would seem to me that you should be able to net someone’s
AAA prospects with that many chips available.
Bear in mind that you might need a first baseman, too, depending on what
you do with Lucas Duda, Alan Dykstra, Eric Campbell and Josh Satin. Ironically the answer there might have been
the Rakuten Eagles’ new corner infielder whose career was derailed by injuries
and the presence of David Wright. There
are other chips on the table, too -- the rest of the roster -- but pretty much
none could start on another major league team.
Assuming Lagares and Flores are still here next year, you
really only need to find one outfielder, a shortstop and possibly a first
baseman. It appears doable, but it would
require the club being honest with its fans about going backwards in order to
progress forwards. Honesty has not been
something the Wilpons have done very well.
Maybe the new PR guy can help.

Grabbing a bite in beautifuk Deerfield Beach and checking in, great article, Reese. Leathersich will force his way into the bullpen picture soon, IMO. The 10 day leather forecast calls for plenty of K's and mid-90's all the way.
D'Arnaud is immediately on a AAA tear and may force their hand soon. I like d'Arnaud and Centeno, to have lefty/righty flexibility. Duda is 15 for 29 when his at bat ends on the first pitch or when he is 1-0. He needs to realize that 29 # should be at least 50. He still can possibly be big-time...he needs to get much more aggressive on hitters' counts, ESPECiALLY in tight/close games, where his average is miserable (most likely because he takes too many good early count strikes - it is not working). He also needs cotton balls for his ears at home where his average is well over 100 points lower than on the road.
I still believe if Lucas did the above, he could be above average. But he (and for that matter Dykstra) struggle vs. Lefties so the platoon would be needed for either.
Duda was very bad on RBIs last year, and I want to note he has made real improvement there in 2014. More aggressiveness will improve it still more.
The guy to trade is Niese. He's at the top of his game right now. And is cost controlled for years. He will have the most value to a team that is in the playoff hunt and so he will net the best return. His injury history adds a bit of risk to his profile, which is another reason that I'm in favor of trading Niese.
Willis - IMO, you are absolutely correct and I don't see the big deal about not having a lefty in a rotation for a team that's going to win around 75 games

Ther so many problems right now with this team that I'm going to stay away from first base and let Luda hit his .230, 20-HRs.
Again, as I said recently, this season is toast.
What I want to see now is what magic Sandy can do for 2015 during the trading deadline.
I agree with your priorities, Mack, what Sandy does in the next month or so is far more important.
Great piece Reese or should I say Reese's pieces? Lol, unless they sign Murphy to a long term contract I would trade him ASAP, because he is going to leave us after 2015( his last contractual year). I don't think the coupons will offer him the $14 mill granted to keep him/ or to get compensation if someone else takes him in 2016 free agency. His bat is perfect for citi and has become a good defensive 2nd basemen.
Trade Colon, dice K and Abreau once u get any type of bite on them.
Trade Flores for Didi Gregorious, cause he will never get a chance here. Or add TDA and get Chris Owings instead.
Trade Gee and Niese and get us someone's young studs that dont have the $$$ to bid on Price and Szmardgia.
Just my fitty cents worth on 50 cents day....

I'm not one to defend Alderson, but he's good at this bits and pieces stuff... Amed Rosario, Travis d'Arnaud, Thor, Bobby Abreu, Vic Black, Zack Thornton, Jairo Perez, Dilson Herrera... none of these represent draft picks or normal channel International free agents.
He should be able to get at least two decent kiddies for Dice-K and Abreu
You have a good plan there Zozo
Nick Ahmed (Dbacks AAA SS) looks better than either Owings or Gregorius - they've moved Gregorius to 2nd. Here's a link to an article about Ahmed from Rising Apple - notice the title.
http://risingapple.com/2014/06/12/nick-ahmed-fit-mets/
Note: I don't agree with the article about Ahmed's hitting. Thin air makes what you hit go farther. It doesn't help you make contact any better. Just as likely the kid has learned to hit. Even if not, his presence in the equation should make Owings cheaper. The important thing is one of these Dbacks should be our new SS, if Sandy dusts off his trader's hat. Hell, get 2 of them and we've got Murphy's replacement - you know the Won'tpons are going to trade him.
You do realize that the only major league talent for major league talent trade Alderson has made was the ill fated one that sent Angel Pagan to San Francisco. If he's not in straight salary dump mode, Alderson's been non-existent on the trade front when it comes to major league talent. Read that again -- in nearly 4 years he's made ONE trade involving receiving major league talent back. (I'm discounting John Buck who was a requirement of salary balance in the R.A. Dickey salary dump trade and Eric Young, Jr. who is below replacement level and traded for (at the time) AAAA pitcher Collin McHugh). He's now in a position to move some AAA and/or AA players to obtain ones who can help right now and during the 2015 season but I have absolutely no confidence he can or will do so.
I see a lot of" trade anyone productive for prospects" here. And if the Mets do that we'll keep hearing about the low payroll and how "cheap" the owners are.
If I want to see nothing but prospects I can watch the Cyclones here in NY or travel to Bingo or Wallyville. Another year of empty seats and lack of income will continue the vicious cycle of lower payroll and calls for the team to be sold.
I don't buy it. At some point we need to trade "future" for MAJOR LEAGUE players or become Kansas City/ Houston/Pitt.
Bill, we are Kansas City
Yes, Mack, we are right now. But why are the posters here pushing for more of the same instead of saying "do something for NOW"?
Bill
I would like to see the Mets do both. There not going to the playoffs this year so I don't want to see them trading quality prospects for players that will help s this year and maybe one more.
I also don't want to see the Mets trading our few good major league players for prospect that won't be ready for 3 or 4 years.
The Mets do need to gamble a little in order to improve. In my opinion they should target players like Joc Pederson. He is ready now and he should help his team for many years to come. We have to trade something to get something. I would rather see the Mets trade someone like Gee over Syndergaard. Gee is ready now to help a contender this year. If he is healthy at the deadline he can bring back something substantial in a trade. Syndergaard has a much higher ceiling and should be better than Gee in 2015 and 2016 when I feel the Mets could be in a position to make a run at it.
The bottom line is the Mets do need to improve now or they will lose there fan base. They shouldn't trade away there future in doing that. I think they can do both.
Bill and I rarely agree but this time we do. However, as I said in his entire tenure Sandy Alderson has only once brought back a major league quality player (well, Ramon Ramirez WAS quality before arriving. Andres Torres was awful and I was vociferously advocating non-tendering him before the season began to avoid his overpaid salary much like the team once did with catcher Johnny Estrada).
Joc Pederson is indeed the type of player they should be targeting, along with Chris Owings. Didi Gregorius and Nick Ahmed may never hit enough to make the upgrade from (ugh!) Ruben Tejada worthwhile. Of course, they have an in-house option in Wilmer Flores, but apparently he kicked Terry Collins' dog or something as he's getting splinters on the bench. (He's the same guy who hit more RBIs in one game than Tejada has done in entire months).
I could see trading for AAA players who are ready if established players are not available, but remember you have to give to get. The Mets do have some vets to trade as well as some kids, so the phone should be ringing off the hook (that is, of course, if the Wilpons have paid the bill).
My guess is Chris Young will be DFAd when EYJ returns... and Recker will be DFAd when d'Arnaud comes back, making room for Plawecki to go to Vegas
It's time to start getting rid of some of the .200 hitters
Then why make room for EYJ? :)
