May 12th 2015 -- Cubs 6, Mets 1

Tuesday night at Wrigley…Noah Syndergaard made his major league debut, but Jake Arrieta out pitched him. The Cubs beat the Mets 6-1.

Syndergaard and Arrieta matched zeros through 5 innings. In the bottom of the 6th the Cubs got to Thor.  Jorge Soler singled up the middle.  Starlin Castro drove in Soler with a double down the left field line and it was 1-0. The next batter Chris Coghlan knocked Syndergaard out of the game with a two run homer, his 4th on the year and it was 3-0. Alex Torres came in in relief and he came in wild.  After Torres struck out Addison Russell, he walked Dexter Fowler, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo to load the bases. The Cubs made it 4-0 when Miguel Montero hit an infield single between first and second that Lucas Duda couldn't make a play on.  The Cubs added their 5th run on the night in the 7th when Russell doubled home Castro against Sean Gilmartin.

In the 8th the Mets finally got to Arrieta.  Lucas Duda singled and went to 3rd on a single by Wilmer Flores.  Kevin Plawecki hit a sac-fly to right field to make it 5-1. In the bottom of the 8th Bryant clubbed a long home run into the wind in left against Hansel Robles, his  3rd on the year and of his career and his  2nd in 2 days. The Cubs had 11 hits on the night, Bryant went 3 for 4 to lead the way. Syndergaard went 5 1/3 he allowed 6 hits 3 runs (all earned) he walked 4 and struck out 6.  Arrieta was brilliant on a cold evening going 8 innings allowing just 3 hits the 1 run (earned) he walked 2 and struck out a season high 10.

Syndergaard takes the loss falling to 0-1.  Arrieta improves to 4-3 on the year. The Mets have now lost the first 2 games of this 4 game set.  They are 2-3 on this current road trip, 20-13 on the year and 7-10 on the road overall.  Wednesday night Matt Harvey (5-1 2.72) gets to play stopper for the Mets. Jason Hammel (3-1 3.52) goes for the Cubs.
