MANCHESTER, NH – It took 12 innings, 391 pitches, and three hours, fifty-three minutes, but the Binghamton Rumble Ponies outlasted the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 4-2, on Saturday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Five Ponies relievers combined for 8-1/3 innings of stellar relief and teamed up with starter David Peterson to strand 19 Fisher Cats runners in the victory.
The bullpen’s impressive run began in the fourth when Stephen Nogosek took over for Peterson. Nogosek stranded an inherited runner and tossed a blank fifth. Joshua Torres entered in the sixth and allowed one run, the only tally surrendered by a Rumble Pony reliever in the game.
Following a game-tying solo homer from Will Toffey in the top of the seventh, Torres stepped around a double to preserve the lead, passing the torch to Stephen Villines. The submariner grinded out 1-2/3 innings, throwing a career-high 52 pitches. He stranded the bases loaded in the 8th, but existed after a 12-pitch battle ended in a walk to Brock Lundquist in the ninth. Joe Zanghi nobly carried the baton. The righty allowed two more to reach, but left the bases loaded to force the game into extras.
In the twelfth, Binghamton finally broke through against Ty Tice. With two aboard, Ali Sanchez zipped an RBI single up the middle. Dario Pizzano doubled the lead with a run-scoring hit to right. Adonis Uceta retired all three he faced in the bottom of the inning to earn his first save.
The late-game theatrics overshadowed a strong pitching matchup between two southpaws from the 2017 draft. Fisher Cats starter Zach Logue retired the first 15 Ponies he faced before surrendering a single to Arismendy Alcantara in the sixth. Logue tossed six innings in the no-decision.
Peterson, the Mets’ first pick in the 2017 draft, pitched into the fourth in his Double-A debut. He struck five and was touched for one run on three hits and three walks in 3-1/3 innings in the no-decision.
The Rumble Ponies (2-1) conclude their first series of the season on Sunday at 1:35 PM. RHP Mike Gibbons takes the ball against RHP Yennsy Diaz.
POSTGAME NOTES: Binghamton pitchers struck out 15, reaching double figures for the second straight game…the Ponies held the Fisher Cats to a 2-for-23 clip with runners in scoring position

Peterson pitched well, but did not get out of the 4th. Sounds a lot like Steve Matz.
They are very rigid with pitch count in the minors during the cold months up north
